A Mississauga skincare shop opens an order one morning and finds a status it has never seen: Resolved. No dispute email asked for evidence. No due date counted down. The customer has been reimbursed the full C$96, a C$15 fee sits on the order, and there is no button to contest it. The owner thinks it is a glitch. It is not. It is the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program at work, a system that settles some disputes automatically, before they become formal chargebacks, and leaves the merchant no way to respond. Most Canadian merchants never hear of it until it hits them, and the program is also tied to a payout reserve and a chargeback rate line. This guide sets out what Shopify's own pages say about the program, what it costs in Canada, how enrolment and exit work, how to find these disputes in your admin and what to do about them.
Quick answer: The Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program, called NDRP, resolves some disputes automatically with the full order amount reimbursed to the customer. Shopify gives no option to contest the dispute or submit evidence, and the outcome is final. A fee applies to each case, C$15 or US$15 in Canada. Merchants with a rate of 1.5% or higher over the last 90 days can be enrolled, with a 10% reserve on payouts. To exit, the rate must fall below 1.00% and stay there for 30 consecutive days.
This guide is for you if:
- You sell on Shopify in Canada with Shopify Payments and have seen a "Resolved" dispute you could not contest.
- You want to know the fee, the enrolment line, the reserve and the exit rule for the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program.
- You want a plan to get a high rate down and stay out of the program.
Last updated: 24 October 2026
Disclosure: ChargeFix publishes this guide and sells an app that helps with Shopify Payments disputes. ChargeFix cannot contest a dispute that NDRP has already resolved, because Shopify offers no evidence window for those cases. The Shopify rules come from Shopify's Help Center, listed at the end. Suggestions that are ours are marked as ours. This guide is general information and not legal advice, and where a source does not say, this guide says so rather than guess.
TL;DR
- NDRP resolves some disputes automatically. There is no evidence window and no appeal.
- The fee for a Canadian store is C$15 or US$15 each time, by payout currency.
- Reaching 1.5% over 90 days can lead to enrolment and a 10% reserve.
- Exit needs a rate under 1.00% held for a month.
- Wins, NDRP cases and standard chargebacks all count in the rate.
Do this today
- In Shopify admin, open Orders and add the Chargeback and inquiry status filter.
- Select Resolved to list automatically resolved disputes.
- In Analytics, then Reports, search "Chargeback rate" and set 90 days.
- Check your Shopify Payments settings for your chargeback monitoring status.
- Note the top reason across the last 90 days of disputes.

What is the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program in Canada?
Shopify describes NDRP as a program that automatically manages customer disputes, with the aim of reducing the chargebacks your business incurs. It applies to Shopify Payments. When a dispute is resolved this way, the full order amount is reimbursed to the customer before the dispute becomes a formal chargeback (see Shopify's network dispute resolution programs page).
The result is a different path from the one in our other guides. A standard chargeback gives you a response window, typically 7 to 21 days, and a review of up to 75 days. An NDRP case gives you neither.
| Feature | Standard chargeback | NDRP case |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence window | Usually 7 to 21 days | None |
| Can you contest? | Yes | No |
| Review time | Up to 75 days | Resolved automatically |
| Appeal | None; decisions are final | None; the outcome is final |
| Fee | Returned only on a win | Charged for each case |
| Status in admin | Open, Submitted, Won or Lost | Resolved |
| Counts in the rate | Yes, including wins | Yes |
The pages we read do not name the card network tools behind the program, so we will not either. Shopify says that card networks, not Shopify, impose chargeback monitoring requirements.
How is the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program different from an inquiry?
An inquiry is an early question from the bank, and it withdraws nothing at the start. A full refund ends an inquiry. NDRP is a resolution, not a question, and the customer is reimbursed without waiting for you. Our inquiry versus chargeback guide covers the inquiry stage, and our refund before chargeback guide shows when a refund ends a dispute early.
What does the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program cost in Canada?
Shopify lists a dispute resolution fee for each automatically resolved dispute. For Canada the page gives C$15 or US$15. For multi-currency countries, the fee currency follows the currency of the payout the order is added to. So a Canadian store paid out in CAD sees C$15, and one paid out in USD sees US$15.
| Country or region | Fee per NDRP case (from Shopify's page) |
|---|---|
| Canada | C$15 or US$15 |
| United States | US$15 |
| United Kingdom | £10 |
| Australia | A$25 |
| Most of the EU | €15 |
| Ireland | €15 plus 23% VAT |
| Japan | ¥1,300 |
Our earlier fee guide covers the standard chargeback fee, and our fee refund guide covers its return on a win. For NDRP there is no win, because there is no contest. The pages we read do not describe a return of the NDRP fee.
Cost of one NDRP case (illustrative)
Order reimbursed to the customer = C$96.00
NDRP fee = C$15.00
Total = C$111.00
The Shopify page does not spell out the ledger entries, so check
your order detail and payout detail to see how the amount and the
fee appear.
Shopify says the fee appears on the order details page of each affected order, which is the first place to look.
Is the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program cost the same as a lost chargeback?
Close, but there is one difference: you lose the chance to win. On a standard chargeback, a strong file can win back the amount and the fee. On an NDRP case, that chance is gone. Our cost of a chargeback guide adds the hidden lines, such as product, shipping and ad spend, and our break-even guide shows when fighting pays.
| Outcome | Money back | Fee back | Can you influence it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard chargeback, you win | Yes | Yes | Yes, with evidence |
| Standard chargeback, you lose | No | No | Yes, with evidence |
| NDRP case | No | We found no return described | No |
How do you find Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program disputes in your admin?
Shopify's "Chargebacks in admin" page describes the path. Go to Orders, click Search and filter, add the status filter named for chargebacks and inquiries, and select Resolved. Shopify defines Resolved as a dispute settled automatically through a network dispute resolution program, with the customer reimbursed the full order amount, and says some disputes skip the Open status entirely (Shopify, Chargebacks in admin).
| Status | What it means (Shopify) |
|---|---|
| Open | Shopify hasn't sent the response yet, so you can still add evidence |
| Submitted | The card issuer is reviewing the evidence and deciding |
| Won | You won the chargeback |
| Lost | You lost the chargeback |
| Resolved | Settled automatically through NDRP; customer reimbursed |

What chargeback rate leads to enrolment in the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
On Shopify's page, an NDRP-inclusive chargeback rate at or above 1.5% across the previous 90 days can trigger automatic enrolment. Enrolment can also follow regular account reviews, based on factors such as customer dispute history and general business practices. Stores under a minimum order volume are left out, and Shopify does not state the amount on that page. You receive a notification when enrolled.
| Item | Shopify's wording |
|---|---|
| Rate line | 1.5% or more across the last 90 days |
| Other triggers | Regular account reviews, including dispute history and business practices |
| Volume floor | Exists, amount not stated |
| Notice | A notification when enrolled |
Shopify's "Chargeback monitoring" page adds that if your rate becomes high you may get a Shopify Payments account health notification, and that actions can include a reserve on Shopify Payments payouts or enrolment in NDRP, depending on account activity. It gives no rate threshold on that page (Shopify, Chargeback monitoring).
How does the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program count your rate?
The NDRP-inclusive rate counts standard chargebacks, NDRP-resolved disputes and disputes you win. Winning a chargeback does not remove it from your rate. Only chargeback-eligible transactions count, and payments processed through third-party providers are excluded. Shopify says the default chargeback rate in admin includes NDRP-resolved disputes.
NDRP-inclusive rate (adapt to your case)
Rate = (standard chargebacks + NDRP-resolved disputes) / eligible orders
over the last 90 days x 100
Standard chargebacks include the ones you won.
Example: 3,000 eligible orders in 90 days
24 standard chargebacks (9 of them won)
21 NDRP-resolved disputes
Rate = (24 + 21) / 3,000 x 100 = 1.50% -> at the enrolment line
The example is ours, with invented counts. Shopify's page gives no formula beyond the description, so treat the shape of the sum as a working model and check your own number in Analytics.
| Disputes in 90 days (3,000 orders) | Rate | Position |
|---|---|---|
| 45 | 1.50% | At the enrolment line |
| 33 | 1.10% | Above the exit line |
| 29 | 0.97% | Below the exit line |
| 24 | 0.80% | Comfortably below |
What is the 10% reserve under the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
A 10% reserve applies to Shopify Payments payouts, and it can be lifted early if you exit the program. Reserve terms are sent by email, and the NDRP page does not state a duration. Shopify's reserves page explains the general idea: a temporary hold on some or all transactions for a set period, to protect against chargebacks and refunds, with examples that include 10% held for 120 days (Shopify, Reserves). If the 90 day chargeback rate stays above 1% after the initial reserve expiration date, further reserves or payout holds may apply.
Cash effect of a 10% reserve (illustrative)
Monthly payouts = C$24,000
Held at 10% = C$2,400 a month
If held for 120 days = about C$9,600 outstanding at once
The 120 day figure is Shopify's example for a percentage reserve in general, not a promise that yours will match. Read your reserve email for the real terms. Our chargeback rate guide shows how to track the number weekly, and our negative balance guide covers what happens if holds and debits exceed your balance.
Can you appeal a Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program reserve?
Sometimes. Shopify's reserves page says that to appeal, you reply to the reserve email within the timeframe it specifies, that some reserves cannot be appealed and that if the email lists requirements for removal, the reserve lifts automatically when you meet them.
How do you exit the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
Your NDRP-inclusive 90 day rate must drop under 1.00% and hold there for 30 days running, while you keep processing on Shopify Payments. If you have been suspended or terminated from Shopify Payments, you might not be eligible. The rate is rolling, so it falls only as old disputes age out and new ones stay low.
Exit maths (illustrative)
Window = 90 days
Eligible orders = 3,000
Exit line = below 1.00% -> 29 disputes or fewer
Today = 45 disputes (1.50%)
To reach 29, 16 or more must age out without being replaced.
If new disputes run at 6 a month (18 per 90 days), then once the
old spike has aged out the rate settles near 0.60%.
| Month | Old spike in window | New disputes | Window total | Rate (3,000 orders) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Today | 45 | 0 | 45 | 1.50% |
| After 1 month of 6 new | 30 | 6 | 36 | 1.20% |
| After 2 months | 15 | 12 | 27 | 0.90% |
| After 3 months | 0 | 18 | 18 | 0.60% |
The table assumes the spike was spread evenly across the window and orders stayed at 3,000. Real counts will differ. The 30 days only start once the rate is below 1.00%, so in this example exit could not begin until about month two, and a lift would follow about a month later.
How long does it take to exit the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
It depends on how many disputes age out and how few arrive. The arithmetic above suggests several months for a bad quarter. A vendor article suggests Mastercard programs expect three or more consecutive months below their threshold, which is a separate program with separate rules. For NDRP, rely on Shopify's own 30 consecutive day rule and track your rate weekly.
What does the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program mean for how you fight chargebacks?
It changes where the work happens. You cannot contest an NDRP case, so the real work moves upstream, to preventing the dispute, and to the cases that still reach you as standard chargebacks.
| Where | What to do |
|---|---|
| Before the order | Review high-risk orders before fulfilment, a pattern Shopify's monitoring page lists |
| After the order | Clear confirmation and shipping emails, so customers recognize what they bought |
| When a dispute is an inquiry | Consider a full refund, which ends an inquiry |
| When a chargeback opens | Build the strongest file you can before the due date |
| Every month | Review Resolved orders for patterns |
Shopify's monitoring page lists patterns to check after a notification: unrecognized business names, high-risk orders, unreceived products, damaged or not-as-described items and subscription disputes. It recommends reviewing high-risk orders before fulfilment and submitting strong evidence before the deadline. Our guides on unrecognized charges, not received claims, fraudulent chargebacks and order and shipping emails cover each one.
Pattern review for Resolved orders (adapt to your case)
For the last 90 days:
Reason pattern Count Share
Unrecognized name [ ] [ ]%
Not received [ ] [ ]%
Not as described [ ] [ ]%
Subscription [ ] [ ]%
Suspected fraud [ ] [ ]%
Pick the largest share. Fix that one this month.
What happens to Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program disputes after Shopify Payments ends?
Shopify says that if your Shopify Payments account is terminated, you may still be enrolled after a review of past transactions, and disputes on orders processed before termination are resolved through NDRP, with a fee for each case. Disputes on orders created after termination are not processed by Shopify Payments, are not eligible for NDRP and follow the regular chargeback process.
| Order date | Process |
|---|---|
| Before termination | NDRP, with a fee per case |
| After termination | Regular chargeback process |
What did the Mississauga shop's first Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program month look like?
Return to the skincare shop from the opening. It filters its orders for Resolved and finds seven cases in the last 90 days, plus 12 standard chargebacks, on about 1,900 eligible orders. The sums are invented to show the method.
| Item | Count | Money |
|---|---|---|
| Resolved cases | 7 | 7 reimbursed orders averaging C$88 = C$616, plus 7 fees of C$15 = C$105 |
| Standard chargebacks | 12 | 12 x C$15 fee at stake, plus the order amounts |
| Total disputes in the rate | 19 | 19 / 1,900 = 1.00% |
| Position | At the exit line, not enrolled | Watch weekly |
Reading the position (illustrative)
NDRP-inclusive rate = (12 + 7) / 1,900 x 100 = 1.00%
Enrolment line = 1.5% -> 28.5 disputes in this window
Headroom = 28 - 19 = 9 more disputes before the line
Fees from Resolved = 7 x 15 = C$105 in 90 days
The owner's first reaction was to hunt for a way to contest the seven. There is none. The better reading is that 7 of 19 disputes, 37%, never reached her, so a third of her rate was invisible until she filtered for it. Her next steps were to sort the seven by reason, find that five were unrecognized charges and change the billing descriptor and the order confirmation email. That is prevention, and it is the only lever for this kind of case.
Why do so many NDRP cases come from unrecognized charges?
We do not know, because Shopify does not publish the reasons behind NDRP cases. The reasoning is ours: a customer who does not recognize a charge disputes it before they contact you, and an automatic program has no one to ask. Our billing descriptor guide shows how to make the charge recognizable, and our order confirmation guide shows how to reinforce it.
What do store owners often misread about the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
Four mix-ups come up often. The table separates them.
| Mix-up | What Shopify's pages say |
|---|---|
| "Resolved means I won." | Resolved means the dispute was settled automatically and the customer was reimbursed the full order amount |
| "The fee comes back like a chargeback fee." | The pages we read describe a fee per case and no return |
| "A win lowers my rate." | A win does not remove a chargeback from the rate |
| "It only applies to big stores." | Smaller stores under a volume floor are left out, and the amount is not published |
What do you write to Shopify Support about an NDRP case?
Support cannot contest the case for you, because Shopify says the outcome is final and stays closed. A message is still worth sending when something looks wrong, such as a fee in the wrong currency, a case on an order that was already refunded or a status you do not understand.
Message to Shopify Support (adapt to your case)
Subject: Resolved dispute on order #[number], question about the fee
Order #[number] shows the status Resolved and a dispute resolution
fee of [amount] on [date]. Our records show [for example: the order
was fully refunded on [date], before the dispute].
Could you confirm how this case was classified, whether the fee is
correct for our payout currency, and whether the earlier refund is
reflected? Order details attached.
| Do | Do not |
|---|---|
| Quote the order number and the date | Ask Support to reverse the outcome |
| Attach the order detail | Send one message per order |
| Ask a specific question | Write "this is unfair" |
| Keep your tone factual | Threaten to leave |
How do you book NDRP cases?
Ask your accountant, because treatment depends on your setup, and this guide is not tax advice. Our own suggestion is to track the reimbursed amount and the fee on separate lines, and to tag both with the order number, so a month of Resolved cases can be summed in a minute. We did not find a CRA page that addresses these fees specifically.
| Line | Suggested tag |
|---|---|
| Reimbursed order amount | Refunded sales, NDRP |
| Dispute resolution fee | Payment processing costs, NDRP fee |
| Reserve held | Held funds, not available cash |
How does ChargeFix help with the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
We want to be direct about the limit. ChargeFix cannot contest a dispute that NDRP has already resolved, because there is no evidence window for those cases. What it can do is help with the standard chargebacks that still reach you, and with the patterns behind your rate.
- Dispute fetched. ChargeFix fetches the chargeback when it opens, so the reason, amount and due date are on one list.
- Records read. It reads the order, addresses, fulfilment and tracking data, and the refund history.
- Evidence scored. It flags what is present and what is missing, with a plain verdict: worth fighting, improve the evidence first or weak evidence.
- Letter from facts. The response is drafted only from verified facts, so it will not claim a delivery, a message or a policy your records do not show.
- Your choice of mode. ChargeFix prepares each response in Manual mode, which is the default. You review and file it, or let Auto mode handle them. Auto mode is on Starter plans and above, off until you turn it on and confirm.
ChargeFix handles Shopify Payments disputes only. It cannot promise a win, and it cannot change an NDRP outcome. It stores minimal data: case ID, amount, reason, status, dates and shop settings. The free plan includes 2 filings a month, and every paid plan starts with a 14 day free trial. Our audit guide shows how to review every dispute, Resolved ones included, in one pass.
What dated plan keeps you out of the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
| Day | What you do | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Check Analytics for the 90 day chargeback rate | Number written |
| Day 0 | Filter Orders for Resolved disputes | List exported |
| Day 1 | Check Shopify Payments settings for monitoring status | Status noted |
| Day 2 | Group disputes by reason | Table made |
| Day 3 | Pick the largest reason and its fix | One fix chosen |
| Day 7 | Make the fix | Done |
| Day 14 | Recheck the rate | Compared |
| Day 30 | Recheck; look for any account health notification | Noted |
| Day 60 | Recheck | Noted |
| Day 90 | Decide the next fix | Logged |
What is different about the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program in Canada?
| Topic | What applies in Canada | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| NDRP fee | C$15 or US$15 by payout currency | Cost cases in your payout currency |
| Standard chargeback fee | C$15 or US$15, returned only on a win | See the fee guide |
| Response window | Usually 7 to 21 days, for standard chargebacks | Plan for the shortest |
| Review | Up to 75 days, for standard chargebacks | Plan cash for the long end |
| Network side | Visa and Mastercard run separate programs | See the VAMP and ECM guide |
| Complaints | Shopify Payments (Canada) acknowledges within 5 business days and decides in writing within 45 days | Raise a complaint with your processor first |
| Oversight | The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada supervises the Code of Conduct but does not decide individual disputes | A complaint does not move a due date |
| Shopify Protect | US stores only | It does not cover Canadian stores |
Two currencies. Many Canadian stores are paid out in both CAD and USD. The NDRP fee follows the payout currency of the order, so the same program can show C$15 on one order and US$15 on another. Match the currency before you total your fees.
Where to complain. Shopify Payments (Canada) acknowledges a complaint within 5 business days and gives a final written decision within 45 days, per its complaint handling terms. A complaint does not change an NDRP outcome.
What are the 10 mistakes to avoid with the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
- Assuming Resolved means a glitch. It is a defined status.
- Looking for a contest button. Shopify offers none.
- Ignoring the fee on the order page. It shows for every case.
- Counting only standard chargebacks. NDRP cases count in the rate.
- Assuming wins lower the rate. Winning does not remove a chargeback from it.
- Ignoring an account health notification. It may include account specific details.
- Skipping the reserve email. Terms and any appeal period are in it.
- Expecting a quick exit. The rate is a rolling 90 days, and exit needs 30 days running.
- Opening another account to dodge it. It risks worse trouble.
- Never reviewing Resolved orders. They show where your prevention gaps are.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
It is a Shopify program that automatically manages some customer disputes for Shopify Payments merchants. The dispute is resolved before it becomes a formal chargeback, the full order amount is reimbursed to the customer, and there is no evidence window. Shopify says the outcome is final and cannot be appealed or reversed through Shopify.
How much is the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program fee in Canada?
Shopify's page lists C$15 or US$15 per automatically resolved dispute in Canada, following the currency of the payout the order is added to. The fee appears on the order details page of each affected order. We found no description of the fee being returned, since there is no contest to win.
Can I contest a Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program dispute?
No. Shopify gives no way to contest the dispute or submit evidence, and the outcome is final. The real work is upstream, in preventing the dispute and in handling the standard chargebacks that still reach you. Review your Resolved orders monthly to find the pattern behind them.
What chargeback rate leads to enrolment in the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
Per Shopify, a store whose NDRP-inclusive rate reaches 1.5% across the previous 90 days can be enrolled automatically. Enrolment can also follow regular account reviews that consider dispute history and business practices. Stores under a minimum order volume are left out, though Shopify does not state the amount.
What is the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program reserve?
A 10% reserve on Shopify Payments payouts, which can be lifted early if you exit. Reserve terms come by email, and the NDRP page does not state a duration. Shopify's reserves page gives 10% held for 120 days as a general example, so read your own email for the real terms and any appeal period.
How do I exit the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
The NDRP-inclusive rate has to drop under 1.00% and hold for 30 days running, with processing continuing on Shopify Payments. If you have been suspended or terminated, you might not be eligible. Track the rate weekly in Analytics and fix the largest dispute reason first.
Do chargebacks I win count toward the rate?
Yes. Shopify's chargeback monitoring page says winning a chargeback does not remove it from your rate, and the NDRP page says the rate counts standard chargebacks, NDRP-resolved disputes and disputes you win. That is why prevention lowers your rate and fighting does not.
How do I find Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program disputes in my admin?
Go to Orders, click Search and filter, add the status filter named for chargebacks and inquiries, and pick Resolved. Shopify defines Resolved as a dispute settled automatically through a network dispute resolution program. Open the order to see the fee on the order details page.
What happens to Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program disputes if my account is terminated?
Shopify says disputes on orders processed before termination are resolved through NDRP, with a fee for each case, and you may be enrolled after a review of past transactions. Disputes on orders created after termination are not eligible for NDRP and follow the regular chargeback process.
How does ChargeFix help with the Shopify Network Dispute Resolution Program?
ChargeFix cannot contest an NDRP case because Shopify offers no evidence window for them. It helps with the chargebacks that still arrive in the normal way, by fetching the dispute, scoring the evidence and drafting the letter from verified facts. In Manual mode, the default, you review and file each response.
Start free trial with ChargeFix
You now have Shopify's own account of the program, the fee in Canada, the rate line, the reserve, the exit rule and a monthly routine for the Resolved orders. The honest limit is that NDRP cases cannot be contested, so the work that moves your number is prevention, plus a strong file on every standard chargeback that still reaches you. ChargeFix fetches the dispute, reads your Shopify order data, shows what is missing and writes the response from verified facts. Manual mode keeps the filing with you, and Auto mode is there if you turn it on.
The free plan includes 2 filings every month, and every paid plan starts with a 14 day free trial. There is no cut of what you win, and no contract.
