Shopify Chargeback Fee in Canada: Cost and Refund Rules (2026)

ChargeFix guide cover with a coin icon: Shopify Chargeback Fee in Canada: Cost and Refund Rules

A buyer in Calgary disputes a C$24 phone case. Shopify takes the C$24 out of your balance, then takes a C$15 fee on top. A sale that earned you a few dollars has become a C$39 hole, and the deadline to fight it has already started. If that is the kind of order that keeps landing in your admin, this guide is about the real Shopify chargeback fee in Canada and what it does to your margin.

Quick answer: The standard Shopify chargeback fee in Canada is C$15, or US$15 if your payouts are in US dollars. It is taken the moment the dispute is filed, together with the disputed amount. If you win, both come back in your next payout. If you lose or accept, the fee stays with Shopify. Submit your evidence early with ChargeFix and the fee has a real chance of coming back.

This guide is for you if:

  • You sell on Shopify Payments from Canada and want to know exactly what each chargeback fee in Canada costs before a dispute happens.
  • You have a low priced catalogue, where the dispute fee of C$15 can swallow most of the profit on an order.
  • You are deciding whether it is worth your time to fight small chargebacks that carry a Canadian Shopify chargeback fee, or to accept them and move on.

Last updated: 22 October 2026

Disclosure: ChargeFix publishes this guide and sells an evidence app for Shopify Payments disputes. Every fee, deadline and refund rule below comes from Shopify's own Help Center, and the sources are listed at the end so you can check them. The worked examples use made up orders, and they are labelled as examples.

TL;DR

  • The Canadian Shopify chargeback fee is C$15, or US$15 by payout currency, and it is charged on day one with the disputed amount.
  • You get the chargeback fee refunded when you win, along with the disputed amount. Accept the chargeback or let the deadline pass without evidence, and your fee is gone for good. On a partial win, Shopify only says the fee might be refunded.
  • What a chargeback really costs you is the amount, the fee, the goods you shipped and the time you spend, not the fee alone.
  • Fighting costs no extra cash. A lost fight and an accepted chargeback lose the same money, so the real price of fighting is your time.
  • The cheapest Shopify chargeback fee in Canada is the one you never trigger. Refund an inquiry in full and no chargeback follows, so no fee follows either.

Do this today

  1. Open Settings, then Payments, and check your payout currency. It decides whether you pay C$15 or US$15 per dispute.
  2. Pull your last 90 days of disputes and add up every chargeback fee in Canada you paid. That is your starting number.
  3. Check each open dispute for its due date, and file the evidence at least three days early.
  4. Run your usual order value through the free chargeback cost calculator to see what a loss costs you.
  5. For any open inquiry, decide today whether a full refund is cheaper than risking a chargeback.

What is the Shopify chargeback fee in Canada, and when is it charged?

The Shopify Payments chargeback fee is C$15 on Canadian dollar payouts and US$15 on US dollar payouts. Shopify charges it the moment the chargeback is filed, and it takes it together with the disputed amount. You do not get a warning first, and you do not get to wait until you have lost.

That timing is what surprises people. The fee is not a penalty for losing. It is a cost of being disputed, charged up front, and refunded only if the outcome goes your way.

Here is what the first day looks like on a C$62 order paid out in Canadian dollars. This is an example, not a real order.

Item Amount When
Disputed amount C$62.00 Withdrawn on day 0
Chargeback fee C$15.00 Withdrawn on day 0
Total out of your balance C$77.00 Day 0
Back to you if you win C$77.00 Next payout after the decision
Kept by Shopify if you lose C$15.00 Not returned

Notice that Shopify Payments charges the same chargeback fee whether the order was C$24 or C$2,400. Shopify's Help Center states one amount for Canadian stores. It does not scale with the order, which is why small orders hurt the most with a chargeback fee in Canada.

Shopify tells you about the dispute by email and in your admin, with a due date. Check that your store contact email is one a person reads daily. A missed notice means a missed deadline, and a missed deadline means the Canadian Shopify chargeback fee will not come back.

Is the chargeback fee refunded if you win?

Yes. On a clean win Shopify returns the disputed amount and the chargeback fee in Canada together, in your next payout. Shopify's Help Center says it directly: when you win, the disputed amount and the chargeback fee are returned.

The rest of the picture is less friendly. This table shows every outcome.

Outcome The disputed amount The chargeback fee
You win Returned Returned
Partial win Part of it returned Shopify says it might be refunded
You lose Stays with the bank Stays with Shopify
You accept Goes to the customer Not refunded
You miss the deadline with no evidence Goes to the customer Not refunded

Two details matter for the chargeback fee in Canada here. First, a partial win is not a guaranteed fee refund. Shopify uses the word "might", so treat the fee as gone until the money lands. Second, letting the deadline pass is treated like accepting. You lose the fee and the amount.

So when someone asks whether the chargeback fee is refunded if you win, the honest answer is yes, but only if you actually win, and only if your evidence was in before the clock ran out. That second condition is the part you control.

What happens to a Shopify chargeback fee in Canada on an inquiry?

An inquiry is an early warning from the bank. Shopify says no money is taken while an inquiry is investigated, so there is no fee at that stage either. The card company usually takes 65 to 75 days to review it, and it can take longer.

The danger is the escalation. If the bank sides with the customer, the inquiry becomes a full chargeback, and then the amount and the C$15 or US$15 fee are debited from you.

You have one clean way out. A full refund on an inquiry ends it, and Shopify says it blocks a chargeback from following. A partial refund does not, so a full chargeback can still arrive after you refund only part of the order.

Situation Result Fee
Inquiry open, full refund Ends the inquiry, no chargeback None
Inquiry open, you refund part Chargeback can still follow Charged if it does
Inquiry open, you submit evidence Bank reviews, 65 to 75 days or longer None unless it escalates
Inquiry escalates to a chargeback Amount and fee debited C$15 or US$15, refunded only on a win

If the customer is clearly right, refunding in full is the cheapest way to close the file. You lose the sale, but you never pay any chargeback fee in Canada, because no chargeback follows.

Why does your payout currency change the chargeback fee in Canada?

Your payout currency sets the Canadian Shopify chargeback fee: C$15 if your payouts are in Canadian dollars, US$15 if they are in US dollars. A store paid out in US dollars pays the US dollar amount.

US$15 is a fixed amount in US dollars. What it costs you in Canadian dollars depends on the exchange rate on the day, and Shopify's help pages do not publish a conversion. Check your own payout report to see what it actually cost.

This matters for two reasons. First, the fee in your reports will not match a flat C$15 if you are paid in US dollars. Second, if you are costing out your disputes, you should use the currency your balance really moves in.

If your payout currency is The fee is The disputed amount is shown in
Canadian dollars C$15 Canadian dollars
US dollars US$15 US dollars

If your payout currency is mixed up with the currency your customers pay in, check your payout settings before you build any cost model on top of it.

How big is the Canadian Shopify chargeback fee compared with your order?

The fee is flat. Your orders are not. That is why a Canadian Shopify chargeback fee feels harmless on a C$400 sale and brutal on a C$20 sale.

Order value Fee as a share of the order Total taken on day 0
C$20 75% C$35
C$45 33% C$60
C$87 17% C$102
C$150 10% C$165
C$400 4% C$415

On a C$20 order, the fee is three quarters of the sale again on top of the sale. On a C$400 order it barely registers. If your average order is low, what a lost dispute really costs is dominated by this one flat number.

That is also why you should not judge a dispute by its size alone. A small dispute still costs the full chargeback fee in Canada, and only evidence filed in time can bring it back.

What is the true cost of a chargeback in Canada?

Your true cost of a chargeback goes well beyond the fee. It is everything you lose when the dispute goes against you, and the fee is just one line.

Take a C$87 order. You paid C$38 for the goods and C$11 to ship them. This is an example, and card processing fees and your own time are left out.

Line Amount Why it counts
Sale refunded to the customer C$87.00 Revenue you no longer have
Dispute fee C$15 C$15.00 Kept by Shopify if you lose
Cost of the goods C$38.00 Shipped, and not coming back
Shipping you paid C$11.00 Spent already
Real loss on a lost dispute C$64.00 Fee plus goods plus shipping

You started with C$87 in revenue and ended with a C$64 loss. The C$87 you paid back is not extra loss, because you only ever kept it as revenue. The cost is the goods, the postage and the fee.

Here is the same arithmetic in a form you can reuse.

True cost of a lost chargeback
  = chargeback fee
  + cost of goods
  + shipping you paid
+ your time (hours x your hourly value)

Example, C$87 order:
  C$15 + C$38 + C$11 + C$0 = C$64

If you win:
Amount and fee both come back.
You are left with only the goods already sold and the time you spent.

If the goods can be resold, or if the customer returns them, the real cost drops. For digital products there are no goods to count, so the loss is the fee and the time.

The free calculator linked in the Do this today list works through the same sums with your own numbers.

Should you fight when the chargeback fee in Canada is this small?

Start with the cash. If you fight and lose, you lose the amount and the fee. If you accept, you lose the same two things. Fighting adds nothing to your cash loss.

That means the real price of fighting is time, the last piece of what a chargeback truly costs. Here is a rough way to price it, using your own estimate of the chance of winning. These win chances are placeholders you set yourself. They are not Canadian statistics.

Value of fighting
= chance of winning x (disputed amount + fee)
  - cost of your time

Example, C$87 order, 45 minutes of work at C$30 an hour:
  Time cost: 0.75 x C$30 = C$22.50

  50% chance of winning:  0.50 x C$102 = C$51.00  ->  C$51.00 - C$22.50 = C$28.50
  30% chance of winning:  0.30 x C$102 = C$30.60  ->  C$30.60 - C$22.50 = C$8.10
  10% chance of winning:  0.10 x C$102 = C$10.20  ->  C$10.20 - C$22.50 = -C$12.30

At a low chance of winning and a high hourly value, fighting a small order loses money in time. That is the honest case for accepting some disputes. It is also why the cost of your time is the number to bring down.

Time spent by hand At C$20 an hour At C$30 an hour At C$45 an hour
30 minutes C$10.00 C$15.00 C$22.50
45 minutes C$15.00 C$22.50 C$33.75
90 minutes C$30.00 C$45.00 C$67.50

ChargeFix exists to shrink that time column. It pulls the order, payment, address and tracking records from your store, scores the evidence item by item, and drafts the letter from verified facts only. When gathering the proof takes a few minutes instead of an hour, the maths on a C$45 dispute changes.

It also gives each case a plain verdict: worth fighting, improve the evidence first, or weak evidence. It does not promise a win, because the bank decides. If you want to run the break even on the chargeback fee in Canada yourself first, the free Should I fight this chargeback? calculator does it with your numbers.

How do you get your Shopify chargeback fee in Canada back by filing on time?

The only fee that comes back is the chargeback fee refunded on a win, and a win needs evidence in front of the bank before the deadline. Shopify's response window is usually 7 to 21 days. There are no extensions after the date passes.

What happens if you add nothing? Shopify sends whatever is saved on the due date, and with no input from you that is only the order data it holds automatically. That is a bare minimum. It does not include your customer emails, a delivery photo outside the tracking file, proof that the customer accepted your policy, or a clear explanation of why the claim is wrong. Those are the items only you can add, and they are what decide whether the fee comes back.

ChargeFix is built to get that complete case in front of the bank in time.

  1. The dispute arrives. ChargeFix fetches the chargeback when it opens, so you are not hunting through email.
  2. The proof is gathered. It reads the order, payment details, addresses, tracking and delivery status from your store.
  3. The case is scored. Delivery, address match, order details, policies and customer messages are checked item by item, with a fix next to each gap.
  4. You get a plain verdict. Worth fighting, improve the evidence first, or weak evidence.
  5. The letter is drafted. It uses only facts from your records, and leaves out what it cannot verify.
  6. You add what only you have. Attach delivery photos, customer email screenshots or PDFs. Your refund and shipping policies are added to every response.
  7. You choose how it files. Manual mode is the default: you review and file. Auto mode files only the dispute types you pick and only when your own rules are met, such as a minimum evidence score and an amount limit. Out of the box it covers product not received disputes with delivery confirmed.

The free plan includes 2 filings a month. Paid plans start with a 14 day trial. ChargeFix charges a flat monthly fee and never takes a share of what you recover, so the fee you win back stays yours.

Task By hand With ChargeFix

Honest limits when you are chasing a chargeback fee in Canada: ChargeFix works with Shopify Payments disputes only, not Stripe or PayPal. It cannot promise a win, and it cannot invent proof that does not exist. On privacy, it reads order details while you review a case and does not store customer names, addresses, emails or letters. The data processing agreement is public at chargefix.pro/dpa.

Can you avoid any Shopify chargeback fee in Canada altogether?

Yes, in one situation: before the dispute becomes a chargeback. Shopify only charges its chargeback fee when a chargeback is filed. Shopify says refunding an inquiry in full stops a chargeback from following, so the chargeback fee in Canada never lands.

Once a chargeback has started, you cannot refund the order. The customer has to withdraw the dispute with their bank first. That route works, but it is slow.

The withdrawal letter must be on the bank's letterhead, show the case number, confirm the charge date and amount, confirm your business name, confirm the chargeback is cancelled, confirm the funds were re-debited from the customer and confirm they were returned to you. Shopify says the banks then take 30 to 90 days to update. Keep fighting in the meantime, because the dispute stays open until it is resolved.

Here is a short email for a customer who is upset and about to call the bank. It is better sent early, while it is still just an inquiry or a complaint.

Subject: Your order #[number]

Hi [first name],

I am sorry the order did not go as you expected. I would like to put it
right today.

I can refund the full amount of C$[amount] to your original payment method,
or [replacement option] if you prefer. Please reply with which you would like.

If you have already contacted your bank, tell me and I will explain the
next steps so you are not out of pocket.

Thank you,
[your name]

Not every upset customer should get a refund, but when they are right, an early refund is far cheaper than the fee, the amount and the weeks of waiting.

How does the network dispute resolution program change the chargeback fee in Canada?

If your chargeback rate climbs, Shopify can enrol you in a network dispute resolution program. This is where a chargeback fee in Canada stops being something you can win back.

Shopify says auto-enrolment can apply when your rate, including automatically resolved disputes, is 1.5% or higher over the last 90 days, with a minimum volume exclusion that protects smaller stores. Once you are in the program, disputes resolve automatically. The full order amount is refunded to the customer, there is no evidence window, and the outcome is final. A fee is charged on each dispute, which for Canadian stores is the same dispute fee of C$15 or US$15.

Shopify also applies a 10% reserve to your payouts. To get out, your rate has to stay under 1.00% for 30 consecutive days.

In the program What happens
Evidence window None
Disputed amount Refunded to the customer
Fee per dispute C$15 or US$15
Payout reserve 10%
How to exit Rate under 1.00% for 30 consecutive days

Seeing a dispute marked "Resolved" with no evidence form is the sign this has happened to your Canadian Shopify chargeback fee. In that state, the chargeback fee in Canada is no longer something your evidence can recover. The only fix is a lower rate.

Winning a dispute also does not remove it from your chargeback rate, because Shopify says the rate counts disputes filed, not outcomes. A refunded chargeback fee in Canada is good for cash, but it does not help your rate. Per chargeback.io, Visa's own limit has been 1.5% since April 2026 in regions that include Canada, so the rate matters outside Shopify too.

The free Visa VAMP ratio calculator shows where you stand.

What does a month of Shopify chargeback fees in Canada really cost?

These fees add up before the wins arrive. The money leaves on day 0 and may not return for up to 75 days after you file, so a handful of disputes can tie up real cash.

This table is an illustration of fees paid up front. It does not predict your outcomes.

Disputes a month Fees paid up front Cash tied up on C$87 orders, with fees
2 C$30 C$204
5 C$75 C$510
10 C$150 C$1,020
25 C$375 C$2,550

Now add a rough view of the chargeback fees in Canada you never recover. If you win half of your fights, which is an assumption for the example, half of the fees come back.

Disputes a month Fees paid Fees unrecovered at a 50% win rate
2 C$30 C$15
5 C$75 C$37.50
10 C$150 C$75
25 C$375 C$187.50

No Canadian win rate from a named current source exists for any Canadian store, so use your own figures. Your Shopify admin shows your record of won and lost cases, and that is the number to put in the model.

What happens if your balance cannot cover a chargeback fee in Canada?

If your Shopify Payments balance cannot cover a chargeback, Shopify debits the shortfall from your bank account for Canadian stores, outside your normal payout schedule. That includes the Shopify Payments chargeback fee.

If that debit fails, Shopify makes a second attempt after 3 business days. If that also fails, you must update the Shopify Payments bank account or contact Shopify Support to repay.

Stage What happens What to do
Balance too low Shortfall debited from your bank account Keep funds available
First debit fails Retried once, three business days later Fix the bank account at once
Second debit fails Account needs attention Update the account or contact Shopify Support

The practical lesson is that one Shopify chargeback fee in Canada can reach your bank account directly. In a quiet week, a few C$15 fees plus the disputed amounts can land outside your payout rhythm.

Refunds have their own rule. Shopify says each merchant has a dynamic negative balance limit, and past it a refund can stay in "Refund pending" until the balance clears. Shopify Support is the route for repayment questions. This guide does not state a specific limit, because Shopify does not publish one.

What does a day by day plan look like for a Canadian Shopify chargeback fee?

Here is a plan counted from the day the dispute opens. It assumes the shortest window, 7 days. A longer banner gives you more buffer.

Day What you do Done when
Day 0 The dispute opens. The amount and the fee leave your balance. You have seen the email
Day 1 Read the reason and due date. Work out the true cost of a chargeback. Decide to fight, or accept. The decision is written down
Day 2 Collect proof. ChargeFix pulls store data, and you add what is outside the store. Every item is found or marked missing
Day 3 Fill gaps: carrier record, customer emails, listing screenshots. Keep each file under 2 MB. Files are labelled and fit the limits
Day 4 Draft and edit the letter. Check every line against a file. Every line points to a file
Day 5 File the response so the fee has a chance to come back. Submission confirmed in your admin
Days 6 and 7 Buffer for surprises. Nothing left to do
Weeks 2 to 11 Wait for the card company, and watch for a second dispute. A decision arrives
After a win The amount and the chargeback fee in Canada return in your next payout. Money is back

Shopify warns that a bank can dispute the same transaction again after you win, and a second chargeback fee in Canada can follow, and a new evidence deadline then appears in your admin. Treat that second round like the first, with the same early filing.

What is different about the chargeback fee in Canada?

Most guides online quote US figures and a few UK ones. These are the points that matter if you run a store in Canada on Shopify Payments.

Topic What applies in Canada What to do
Canadian Shopify chargeback fee C$15 or US$15, set by the currency of your payouts Know which currency you are paid out in
Chargeback fee refunded on a win Yes, in your next payout Count it as money you can recover
Fee on accept or no response Not returned Treat accepting as a C$15 or US$15 cost
Bank debit Shortfalls come from your bank account Keep funds available
Failed debit One retry, three business days later Update the account or contact Shopify Support
Shopify Protect US stores only Do not rely on it
Network program May apply if your rate stays high Watch your rate

Shopify Protect does not cover you. Shopify Protect, the program that reimburses eligible fraud chargebacks, only covers stores located in the United States with a US Shopify Payments account. A Canadian store is not eligible, so your own evidence is what gets the fee back.

Complaints about how a fee was handled. Canada has a Code of Conduct for the Credit and Debit Card Industry, supervised by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC). Merchants can raise Code complaints with their payment processor, and Shopify Payments (Canada) publishes its own process: it acknowledges a complaint within 5 business days and gives a final written decision within 45 days. FCAC is not a dispute resolution agency for individual cases, so it will not reverse a fee or a chargeback. Evidence filed early remains your strongest tool.

Accounting. How you record chargeback fees for tax is a question for your accountant. This guide gives no tax advice.

What are the 10 mistakes that raise your Shopify chargeback fee in Canada?

  1. Thinking the fee comes back automatically. It comes back only on a win. Accepting or missing the deadline loses it.
  2. Ignoring small disputes. A C$20 order still triggers the full chargeback fee in Canada. Small disputes add up.
  3. Not knowing your payout currency. The fee follows it, and so do your numbers.
  4. Waiting for the last day. The deadline passes at 11:59 PM if no time is shown, with no extensions.
  5. Trusting the automatic response. Shopify sends order data on the due date if you add nothing. That is a minimum, not a case.
  6. Refunding after the chargeback starts. Shopify does not allow it. The customer has to withdraw first.
  7. Refunding only part of an inquiry. A partial refund does not block a chargeback, so the fee can still land.
  8. Counting only the fee. The full price of a lost dispute includes the goods, shipping and your time.
  9. Assuming a win lowers your rate. Shopify says the rate counts disputes filed, so a win does not help it.
  10. Skipping the cash check. A low balance triggers a bank debit, and a failed debit needs action within days.

FAQs

How much is the Shopify chargeback fee in Canada?

The Canadian Shopify chargeback fee is C$15 when your payouts are in Canadian dollars and US$15 when they are in US dollars. Shopify charges it as soon as the chargeback is filed, together with the disputed amount. It is a flat dispute fee of C$15 or US$15, so it does not change with the size of the order.

Is the chargeback fee refunded if you win a Shopify chargeback?

Yes. A win returns both the disputed amount and the fee with your next payout. If you accept the chargeback or miss the deadline, the fee is not refunded. On a partial win, Shopify says it might refund the fee, so do not plan on it.

Does a Shopify chargeback fee in Canada apply to an inquiry?

No money is taken while a dispute is only an inquiry, so no chargeback fee in Canada applies at that stage. The review usually takes 65 to 75 days. If the bank sides with the customer, the inquiry becomes a chargeback, and then the amount and the fee are debited from you.

Can I avoid the Canadian Shopify chargeback fee?

Sometimes. A full refund on an inquiry ends it and stops a chargeback from following, so the fee is never charged. A partial refund does not block one. Once a chargeback has started you cannot refund, because the customer must withdraw the dispute with their bank first.

What happens to my chargeback fee in Canada if I do not respond?

You lose it. Letting the deadline pass counts like accepting, so the fee is not refunded. Shopify submits only the order data it holds automatically, which rarely covers your emails or policy agreement, so you are also much more likely to lose the disputed amount.

Why does Shopify charge C$15 or US$15?

Shopify sets the fee by your payout currency. A store paid out in Canadian dollars pays C$15, and a store paid out in US dollars pays US$15. Shopify's help pages do not publish a conversion, so check your payout report to see what the fee cost in your currency.

Does winning a chargeback lower my chargeback rate?

No. Shopify says your rate is based on the number of disputes filed, not their outcomes, so a won dispute still counts. A refunded fee helps your cash but not your rate. Clear descriptions, quick replies and reliable tracking reduce disputes, which protects your account.

What if my bank account cannot cover the Shopify Payments chargeback fee?

If your Shopify Payments balance is too low, Shopify debits the shortfall from your bank account for Canadian stores, outside your payout schedule. If that fails, it tries again after 3 business days. If it fails again, update the bank account or contact Shopify Support to repay.

Is the chargeback fee in Canada different in the network dispute resolution program?

The fee amount is the same, C$15 or US$15 for Canadian stores, but it is charged on each dispute and you cannot win it back. Disputes resolve automatically with the full amount refunded to the customer, and there is no evidence window. Shopify also applies a 10% payout reserve.

Can ChargeFix get my Canadian Shopify chargeback fee back?

ChargeFix cannot promise a win, because the bank decides. What it does is gather your proof from Shopify, show what is missing, draft the letter from verified facts and file before the deadline, so the fee has a fair chance of coming back. It works with Shopify Payments disputes only.
