Mastercard Excessive Chargeback Calculator

Mastercard flags merchants who pass both a ratio line and a count line in the same month. Check which tier you would be in.

You are below the excessive-chargeback lines.

Chargeback ratio1.17%Line: 1.5%
Chargebacks70Line: 100

Both conditions must be true in the same month. The high tier needs 300 chargebacks and 3%. Programme fines are charged to your payment provider, who may pass them on, so we do not guess amounts.

How it works

  1. Chargeback ratio = Mastercard chargebacks ÷ Mastercard sales in the month.
  2. Excessive (ECM): at least 100 chargebacks and at least 1.5%.
  3. High excessive (HECM): at least 300 chargebacks and at least 3.0%.

Questions

Why do I need both lines?

Mastercard requires the ratio and the chargeback count to be met in the same month. A tiny store with a high ratio is not in the program.

What are the fines?

Fines are charged to your payment provider, who may pass them on, and published amounts differ between sources. We do not guess figures. Ask your provider for the schedule.

Does this apply on Shopify?

Mastercard's programs run between the network and payment providers. If your account is at risk, Shopify will contact you.
