A Saskatoon pet supplies owner gets three pitches in one week. The first tool charges a quarter of everything it recovers. The second charges a flat amount for every alert it acts on. The third charges per transaction it scans. All three promise "protection", none of them uses the same unit and each one looks cheap in its own sales page example. She cannot tell which one costs the least for a store with 40 disputes a month and an average order of C$85. Chargeback protection cost is hard to compare because the pricing models measure different things. This guide explains the common models, shows what some vendors publish on their own pricing pages, and gives you a calculator that turns any model into one monthly number. It also covers hidden costs, a contract checklist and a decision rule. Vendor prices were read on the vendors' own pages where we could, and we say where we could not. Your own dispute count and average order decide the answer, not ours.
Quick answer: Chargeback protection cost falls into four pricing models: a percentage of what the tool recovers (Chargeflow lists 25% of recovered chargebacks, Disputifier's Shopify listing says 20% of revenue won back), a fee per alert or prevented dispute (Chargeback.io lists 15 dollars per Visa RDR alert and 29 dollars per Ethoca alert, Chargeflow lists 29 dollars per deflected chargeback), a fee per scanned transaction (Chargeflow lists 0.10 dollars after 1,000 free scans) and flat monthly plans. Compare them by computing the monthly total for your own dispute count, average order and win rate.
This guide is for you if:
- You sell on Shopify in Canada with Shopify Payments and you are comparing tools that promise protection.
- You want one monthly number for each pricing model, not a sales page example.
- You want to know what hidden costs sit around the fee.

Disclosure: ChargeFix publishes this guide and sells an app that helps with Shopify Payments disputes, so we are not neutral. We name other tools only to compare pricing models, we read their pricing from their own pages where we could, and we mark what we could not verify. Prices change, so check each vendor's page before you buy. This guide is general information and not financial advice.
TL;DR
- Four models exist: percentage of recoveries, fee per alert, fee per scan, and monthly plans.
- Vendors publish dollar figures without always naming a currency. Treat them as US dollars unless stated, and convert.
- Percentage models cost nothing when you win nothing, but take a share of every win.
- Per alert models charge only when an alert prevents a dispute, but alerts do not fix everything.
- Compute your own monthly total. The cheapest model for 10 disputes is rarely the cheapest for 100.
Do this today
- Count your disputes, wins and average order over the last 90 days.
- Write down your current monthly cost for disputes (fees, lost revenue, time).
- Collect each vendor's pricing page and the date you read it.
- Run the calculator below for every model.
- Ask each vendor the contract questions in the checklist.
Chargeback protection cost in one table
| Pricing model | Who charges it (published figure) | You pay when |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage of recovered | Chargeflow: 25% of recovered chargebacks; Disputifier listing: 20% of revenue won back | A dispute is won |
| Fee per alert or deflected dispute | Chargeback.io: 15 dollars per RDR alert, 29 dollars per Ethoca alert; Chargeflow: 29 dollars per deflected chargeback | An alert prevents a dispute |
| Fee per scanned transaction | Chargeflow: 0.10 dollars after the first 1,000 scans | Every order is scanned |
| Flat monthly plan | Varies by vendor and quote | Every month, win or lose |
What is included in chargeback protection cost?
Chargeback protection cost is everything you pay for a tool or service that tries to stop or win disputes: the vendor fee, the Shopify chargeback fee that still applies when you lose, the revenue you lose when a dispute fails and the time you spend. The vendor fee is only one line.
Shopify itself charges a fee of C$15 or US$15 per chargeback, matching your payout currency, and returns it only on a win (Shopify, Responding to chargebacks and inquiries). Our fee guide covers that fee, and the cost per order guide covers the full stack of one dispute.
| Cost line | Who gets it | Included in the vendor price? |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor fee | The tool | Yes |
| Shopify chargeback fee | Shopify | No; returned only on a win |
| Lost sale amount | Nobody; it is refunded to the customer | No |
| Product and shipping | Suppliers and carriers | No |
| Your time | You | Reduced by automation, not removed |
Is Shopify Protect available in Canada?
No. Shopify's own materials limit Shopify Protect to US stores, so it does not cover Canadian stores. Canadian merchants who want protection compare third party tools and services, which is why pricing models matter.
What are the four chargeback protection cost models?
Each model answers a different question. A percentage model asks "what did the tool win back?" An alert model asks "what did the tool stop?" A scan model asks "how many orders did you send through?" A plan model asks "are you a customer this month?"
| Model | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage of recovered | No cost when nothing is recovered | A share of every win, uncapped on some tools |
| Fee per alert | Pay only when a dispute is stopped | Alerts cover only some disputes |
| Fee per scan | Predictable per order | You pay even when nothing happens |
| Flat monthly plan | Easy to budget | Pay in a quiet month |
How does a percentage fee change chargeback protection cost?
A percentage fee, which is common in chargeback protection cost quotes, takes a share of each recovered amount. On a C$85 win at 25%, the fee is about C$21 and you keep about C$64, though whether the tool's percentage applies to the dispute fee as well depends on its terms. Chargeflow's pricing page says its fee applies to recovered amounts and excludes the dispute fee. Disputifier's Shopify listing says 20% of revenue won back and does not mention a cap on that page, while a third party article mentioned a cap that we did not confirm on the vendor's own page.
Percentage model (illustrative, C$)
Win amount C$85.00
Fee rate 25%
Vendor fee C$21.25
You keep C$63.75
Shopify fee refund C$15.00 on a win (returned by Shopify, not the vendor)
How does an alert fee shape chargeback protection cost?
Alert services work with the card networks so some disputes are stopped before they become chargebacks. The vendor charges per alert it handles. Chargeback.io's pricing page lists 15 dollars for a Visa RDR alert and 29 dollars for a Mastercard Ethoca alert, and says you pay only for prevented chargebacks. Chargeflow's page lists 29 dollars per deflected chargeback and suggests asking for a better price above 50 alerts a month.
Alert model (illustrative)
Order amount C$85.00
Alert fee about C$20 to C$40 depending on network and currency
Shopify fee avoided C$15 (no chargeback was opened)
Net vs losing: you keep C$85 and avoid C$15, minus the alert fee
An alert that stops an C$85 dispute and costs 20 to 40 dollars can still be worth it compared with losing the order. Whether the numbers favour you depends on your win rate if you had fought instead. Ask each vendor whether alerts work with Shopify Payments and how they interact with Shopify's own network dispute resolution program, which resolves some disputes automatically and charges its own fee. Our program guide explains that program, and we did not find a source describing how third party alerts relate to it.
How does a scan fee affect chargeback protection cost?
A scan fee charges per order checked, whether or not a problem appears. Chargeflow's page lists 0.10 dollars per scanned transaction after the first 1,000 scans, and a free tier for insights.
Scan model (illustrative)
Orders per month 3,000
Free scans 1,000
Billable scans 2,000
Rate 0.10 per scan
Monthly cost 200 dollars
At 3,000 orders a month the scan cost is 200 dollars regardless of disputes. That can be sensible for a store with many orders and many disputes, and wasteful for a store with few disputes.
What about flat monthly plans?
Some guarantee style services charge monthly tiers tied to a protected volume. We did not verify current numbers on vendor pages, so we do not quote any. Ask for the plan, the cap, what the "guarantee" covers and which dispute reasons are excluded, and get it in writing.
How do you calculate chargeback protection cost for your store?
Pick one month of data and run every model through it.
Chargeback protection cost calculator (adapt to your case)
N = orders per month
d = disputes opened per month without a tool
a = average order amount
w = win rate if you fight yourself (decimal)
s = share of disputes a tool could prevent via alerts (decimal)
Percentage model:
recovered = d x w x a (assumes the tool wins at your rate)
fee = recovered x p (p = 0.25 or 0.20)
Alert model:
prevented = d x s
fee = prevented x alert_fee
Scan model:
fee = max(0, N - 1000) x 0.10
Compare each fee with the value it creates:
Value of percentage tool = extra wins x a - fee
Value of alert tool = prevented x (a + 15) - fee
Here is a worked month for the Saskatoon store: 1,800 orders, 40 disputes, average order C$85, win rate 30% when fighting alone and 45% with a tool, alerts could prevent 25% of disputes.
| Model | Fee | Value created | Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Percentage at 25% | about 40 x 0.45 x 85 x 0.25 = C$382 | extra wins: 40 x (0.45 - 0.30) x 85 = C$510 | C$128 |
| Alert at 20 each (illustrative) | 10 prevented x 20 = C$200 | 10 x (85 + 15) = C$1,000 | C$800 |
| Scan at 0.10 | (1,800 - 1,000) x 0.10 = C$80 | scanning alone prevents nothing | negative unless it feeds a fix |
The numbers are invented, and the win rates are assumptions, not benchmarks. The point is the method: value created minus fee, per model, for your own data. In this example the alert model wins because it prevents the dispute and avoids the fee, while the percentage model adds only the improvement over what you would win alone. Change the win rate or the share of preventable disputes and the order changes.
| If your store has... | The model that often fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Few disputes, high order value | Percentage of recovered | You pay only when you win |
| Many disputes of preventable types | Per alert | You stop disputes before they cost a fee |
| Many orders, many disputes | Mix of alerts and percentage | Prevent some, fight the rest |
| Very few disputes | Free plan or manual filing | Fixed costs would outweigh gains |
What is the break even rule for chargeback protection cost?
A tool pays for itself when the value it creates per month exceeds its monthly cost. Value comes from extra wins, prevented disputes and time saved.
Break even (adapt to your case)
Monthly value = extra wins x a + prevented x (a + 15) + hours saved x hourly value
Monthly cost = vendor fees (all models used)
Pays for itself when Monthly value > Monthly cost
Example: extra wins 6 (C$510), prevented 10 (C$1,000), 8 hours saved x C$30 = C$240
Value = 1,750 Cost = 382 + 200 = 582 -> pays for itself
Be honest about the inputs to any break even sum. If you assume a win rate you cannot support, the result is worth little. Use your own last 90 days. Our worth fighting guide shows how to estimate win chances by evidence grade without outside benchmarks.
What does chargeback protection cost at three store sizes?
These three invented stores show how the same pricing models land differently by volume. The numbers are illustrative, the win and prevention shares are assumptions and your own data replaces them.
| Store | Orders a month | Disputes | Average order | Likely cheapest model | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small giftware | 300 | 3 | C$60 | Free plan or manual filing | Fixed fees would exceed the gain |
| Mid size apparel | 1,800 | 40 | C$85 | Alerts plus a percentage tool | Prevent some, fight the rest |
| Large electronics | 9,000 | 150 | C$240 | Negotiated alert tier plus a percentage tool | Volume discounts and big wins |
For the small store, three disputes a month is about C$180 at risk, and a 25% fee on even a perfect result would be under C$45. A tool saves little, so the better investment is a good evidence template (template guide). For the large store, one extra win of C$240 more than covers a monthly total of a few scans, which is why volume changes the answer.
Monthly total comparison (illustrative, C$)
Store: mid size apparel, 1,800 orders, 40 disputes, average order 85
Manual filing only
Fees to Shopify on losses 28 x 15 = 420 (if 12 are won)
Lost sales 28 x 85 = 2,380
Your time 40 x 20 min = 13 h x 30 = 390
Monthly total 3,190
Percentage tool (25%), win rate rises to 45%
Fees to Shopify on losses 22 x 15 = 330
Lost sales 22 x 85 = 1,870
Vendor fee 18 x 85 x 0.25 = 383
Your time 40 x 6 min = 4 h x 30 = 120
Monthly total 2,703
The tool saves about C$487 in this invented month. Replace every input with your own and the saving may shrink or grow, or turn negative. The method matters more than the example.
How do you read a chargeback protection cost quote?
Reduce every quote to the same five lines before comparing. A quote that cannot be reduced is a quote you should question.
| Line | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Unit | What is the thing I am charged for: win, alert, scan or month? |
| Rate | What is the rate, and in which currency? |
| Base | Does it apply to the order amount only, or also to the Shopify fee? |
| Limits | Is there a minimum, a cap or a tier? |
| Term | What is the contract length and the notice to cancel? |
Quote normaliser (adapt to your case)
Vendor: [name] Date read: [date]
Unit: [win / alert / scan / month]
Rate: [number] [currency stated? yes/no]
Base: [order amount / amount + fee]
Limits: [minimum / cap / tiers]
Term: [months] Cancel notice: [days]
My monthly total at current volume: [ ] (use the calculator)
Which chargeback protection cost questions should you ask on a sales call?
Four questions cut through most sales pages. First, which dispute reasons are in scope and which are excluded? Second, does the tool work with Shopify Payments for my country, and how do I confirm it? Third, what happens to the fee if a won dispute is later reversed? Fourth, what data does the tool store, and can I delete it? Write down the answers and the date, because terms change. Our safety guide explains what a careful data answer sounds like.
When does a break even check say no to chargeback protection cost?
Say no when the monthly value is smaller than the monthly cost on your own data, or when the tool cannot show how it handles your most common dispute reason. A tool that is cheap but weak on "product not received" is poor value for a store whose disputes are mostly that reason (not received guide). A break even sum that only works with an optimistic win rate is a no.
| Break even result | Action |
|---|---|
| Value above cost by a clear margin on your own data | Start a trial |
| Value close to cost | Test for 30 days; track results |
| Value below cost | Keep filing manually and improve prevention |
| Cannot compute | Ask the vendor for the missing input |
What hidden costs sit around chargeback protection cost?
| Hidden cost | What to check |
|---|---|
| Minimums and caps | Monthly minimum, per alert cap, volume tiers |
| Currency | Vendor prices may be in US dollars; convert to Canadian dollars |
| Excluded dispute reasons | Fraud only, or all reasons, or only some networks |
| Fees on fees | Whether a percentage applies to the dispute fee too |
| Contract length | Annual commitments and cancellation notice |
| Data access | What the tool reads and stores |
| Support | Response time during your dispute windows |

How does chargeback protection cost compare with insurance and agencies?
| Option | Typical pricing logic | What you still handle |
|---|---|---|
| App with a percentage fee | Share of wins | Reviewing evidence |
| Alert service | Per alert | Disputes not covered by alerts |
| Guarantee or insurance style service | Monthly tier tied to volume | Exclusions in the terms |
| Agency | Retainer or share of wins | Briefing and oversight |
| Virtual assistant | Hourly | Training and quality |
Our insurance versus app guide, agency guide and virtual assistant guide go deeper on each option. For a general comparison of tools, see our best app guide, and for one named alternative see the Chargeflow alternative guide.
How do you keep chargeback protection cost from creeping up?
Costs creep when volume grows, when tiers change or when a trial rolls into a paid plan without a review. A quarterly check keeps the number honest.
| Check | When | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline | Every quarter | Recompute disputes, wins and monthly total |
| Contract | 60 days before renewal | Read the term; decide before the notice date |
| Tier | When volume changes by 25% | Ask for the new rate |
| Results | Every month | Compare wins and prevented disputes with the baseline |
| Alternatives | Twice a year | Re-run the calculator for each model |
Quarterly chargeback protection cost review (adapt to your case)
Quarter: [ ]
Disputes opened: [n] Won: [n] Prevented: [n]
Vendor fees paid: C$[ ]
Shopify fees on losses: C$[ ]
Lost sales: C$[ ]
Monthly total (average): C$[ ]

Decision: keep / renegotiate / switch / drop
Prevention lowers every model's bill, because a dispute that never opens needs no alert and no letter. Clear descriptors, tracking emails and honest delivery promises do most of the work, and the prevention emails guide and billing descriptor guide show how. Keep an eye on your rate too, since Shopify's monitoring page says winning a chargeback does not remove it from your rate. The rate guide explains the lines.
How does ChargeFix handle chargeback protection cost?
We want to be plain. ChargeFix is an evidence tool for Shopify Payments disputes, not an alert network. It has a free plan with 2 filings a month, every paid plan has a 14 day free trial and there is no cut of wins and no contract. Check the pricing page for current plans, because we do not quote paid prices in this guide.
- Dispute fetched. ChargeFix fetches each chargeback as it opens, so the reason, amount and due date sit in one list.
- Records read. It reads the order, addresses, fulfilment and tracking data, and refund history.
- Evidence scored. It shows what is present and what is missing, with a plain verdict: worth fighting, improve the evidence first or weak evidence.
- Letter from facts. The response is drafted only from verified facts, so it never claims a delivery or message your records do not show.
- Your choice of mode. ChargeFix prepares each response in Manual mode, which is the default. You review and file it, or let Auto mode handle them. Auto mode is on Starter plans and above, off until you turn it on and confirm.
ChargeFix handles Shopify Payments disputes only. It cannot promise a win, and it cannot contest disputes that Shopify's network program resolves automatically. It stores minimal data: case ID, amount, reason, status, dates and shop settings.
What dated plan lets you choose a tool in 30 days?
| Day | What you do | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pull 90 days of disputes, wins and orders | Sheet filled |
| 2 | Compute your current monthly dispute cost | Baseline written |
| 3 | Collect vendor pricing pages and dates | Links saved |
| 5 | Run the calculator for each model | One monthly number per model |
| 7 | Ask each vendor the checklist questions | Answers in writing |
| 10 | Start two trials with a small scope | Both running |
| 24 | Compare results with the baseline | Table written |
| 30 | Choose, or keep filing manually | Decision logged |
What is different about chargeback protection cost in Canada?
| Topic | What applies in Canada | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Currency | Shopify's chargeback fee is C$15 or US$15; vendors often price in dollars | Convert every fee to Canadian dollars at the day's rate |
| Shopify Protect | US stores only | It is not an option for Canadian stores |
| Payment processor | Shopify Payments only for this guide | Confirm each vendor supports it |
| Program fee | C$15 or US$15 on automatically resolved disputes | See the program guide |
| Quebec | French language expectations for customers | See the Quebec guide |
| Complaints | Shopify Payments (Canada) acknowledges within 5 business days and decides in writing within 45 days | Use for service concerns |
Reading dollar figures. Several vendor pages show a dollar sign without naming the currency. We treat those as US dollars unless a page says otherwise, and we suggest you ask. A 29 dollar fee is about 40 Canadian dollars at many recent exchange rates, but we give no rate because it changes daily.
What are the 10 mistakes to avoid with chargeback protection cost?
- Comparing headline percentages only. A low rate on a big win can cost more than a flat fee.
- Ignoring the Shopify fee. It applies to chargebacks you lose.
- Assuming alerts stop every dispute. They cover only some.
- Trusting win rates from sales pages. Use your own 90 days.
- Skipping the currency question. Dollar figures may be US dollars.
- Signing long contracts early. Start with a trial and a small scope.
- Paying for scans without a plan to act. Data without action is a cost.
- Forgetting minimums and caps. They change the maths at low volume.
- Not tracking results. Without a baseline you cannot tell if it works.
- Overlooking data access. Know what the tool reads and stores.
Frequently asked questions
How much does chargeback protection cost?
Chargeback protection cost depends on the model. Published examples include 25% of recovered chargebacks on one tool, 20% of revenue won back on another, 15 to 29 dollars per alert and 0.10 dollars per scan after 1,000 free scans. Compute a monthly total with your own dispute count, average order and win rate.
Is a percentage fee or a flat fee cheaper for chargeback protection cost?
It depends on your store and its volume. A percentage fee costs nothing when you win nothing, but takes a share of every win. A per alert fee charges only when a dispute is stopped. For few disputes of high value a percentage often fits, while many preventable disputes can favour alerts.
Does chargeback protection cost include Shopify's fee?
No. Shopify charges a fee of C$15 or US$15 per chargeback, matching your payout currency, and returns it only on a win. A vendor fee sits on top. If an alert prevents the dispute from opening, you avoid Shopify's chargeback fee for that case.
Are vendor prices in Canadian dollars?
Often not stated. Several pricing pages show a dollar sign without naming the currency, and one Shopify listing states US dollars. Treat unlabelled figures as US dollars until the vendor confirms, and convert to Canadian dollars at the day's rate before comparing any totals.
Do alert services work with Shopify Payments?
Ask each vendor and get the answer in writing, because it affects your chargeback protection cost. Some vendors list a Shopify Payments integration, but we did not confirm how alerts relate to Shopify's own network dispute resolution program, which resolves some disputes automatically. Do not assume overlap or coverage without confirmation.
Is Shopify Protect available for Canadian stores?
No. Shopify limits Shopify Protect to US stores, so Canadian merchants compare third party tools and services. That is why pricing models, contract terms and coverage exclusions deserve a careful read before you commit to any chargeback protection cost, and why a written quote beats a sales call.
What hidden costs should I look for?
For any chargeback protection cost quote, check minimum fees, caps, volume tiers, currency, excluded dispute reasons, whether a percentage also applies to the dispute fee, contract length and cancellation notice, data access and support response times. Put the answers in a table for each vendor so the hidden cost of each option sits side by side.
How do I know if a tool pays for itself?
Compare monthly value with monthly cost. Value is extra wins times the average order, plus prevented disputes times the order amount and Shopify fee, plus hours saved times your hourly value. Use your last 90 days of data, not a vendor example.
Should I start with a free plan?
Often yes, if your dispute count is low and your chargeback protection cost needs to stay near zero. A free plan or manual filing can cover a few cases a month, and you can add a paid tool when volume justifies it. Start any paid tool with a trial and a small scope, and measure the change in your chargeback protection cost against your 90 day baseline.
How does ChargeFix handle chargeback protection cost?
ChargeFix has a free plan with 2 filings a month, a 14 day free trial on every paid plan, no cut of wins and no contract. It is an evidence tool for Shopify Payments, not an alert network. In Manual mode, the default, each response waits for you.
Start free trial with ChargeFix
You now have the four pricing models, the published figures we could verify, a calculator, a break even rule, a hidden cost checklist and a 30 day plan. The honest limit is that your own data decides the answer, and that vendor prices change. ChargeFix fetches the dispute, reads your Shopify order data, shows what is missing and writes the response from verified facts. Manual mode keeps the filing with you, and Auto mode is there if you turn it on.
The free plan includes 2 filings every month, and every paid plan starts with a 14 day free trial. There is no cut of what you win, and no contract.
