A customer in Winnipeg pays for an order with a Visa Debit card. A month later their bank opens a dispute, and you see it in your Shopify admin with the same reason codes you know from credit cards. The difference is that the money left their chequing account on the day they bought, so the customer noticed quickly and cares about getting it back. A Visa Debit chargeback in Canada looks like a credit card dispute on your side, but the card behind it works differently in Canada than in the United States, and that shapes how you plan for it.
Quick answer: For an online Shopify order, a Visa Debit card in Canada is processed through the Visa network, the same way a credit card is. On your side a Visa Debit chargeback follows Shopify's usual rules: the same reasons, the same 7 to 21 day response window, the same C$15 or US$15 fee (by payout currency) and the same evidence. Contact the customer first, submit evidence before the due date, and cost each case before you fight. We found no published Canadian Visa Debit dispute deadlines or win rates, so this guide does not state any.
This guide is for you if:
- You sell to Canadian customers on Shopify Payments and see disputes on Visa Debit cards.
- You want to know whether debit disputes differ from credit card disputes.
- You want an evidence and cost routine that does not depend on guesses about card type.

Disclosure: ChargeFix publishes this guide and sells an app for Shopify Payments disputes. Shopify rules come from Shopify's Help Center. Visa Debit network details come from Helcim, a payment processor, and Visa Claims Resolution details from a TD Merchant Solutions FAQ. We did not verify Canadian Visa Debit dispute deadlines, win rates or how issuers behave, so this guide does not state them.
TL;DR
- In Canada, Visa Debit used online runs on the Visa network and is processed like a credit card, per Helcim.
- Shopify's reasons, window, fee and evidence rules are the same for debit and credit.
- Money leaves the customer's account at purchase, so debit customers tend to notice a problem sooner. That is reasoning, not a measured rate.
- TD says Visa Claims Resolution began in Canada on 15 April 2018 and that arbitration needs the merchant's written consent.
- Do not guess deadlines or win rates. Cost each case with your own numbers.
Do this today
- Open your last 10 disputes and note whether each was a debit or credit card, if your admin shows it.
- Check that every dispute has the order, fulfillment and billing details attached.
- Write down your payout currency and the fee it implies.
- Set a rule to contact the customer on the day a dispute opens.
- Build one evidence pack template for not received and one for not as described.
Visa Debit chargeback in Canada: the process in one table
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Read the dispute | Reason, amount, due date | The window is 7 to 21 days, no extensions |
| 2. Contact the customer | Ask what happened, offer a fix | Many agree to withdraw |
| 3. Gather evidence | Shopify's list for the reason | Direct proof ranks first |
| 4. Cost the case | Amount plus fee, and your time | The fee is lost on a defeat |
| 5. Decide | Fight, refund or accept | A cost sheet beats a feeling |
| 6. File | Before the due date | Decisions are final |
| 7. Review | Record cause and outcome | Fix the cause |
What is a Visa Debit chargeback in Canada, and who decides it?
It is a card dispute opened by the issuing bank on a payment made with a Visa Debit card. For a Shopify merchant the notice looks like any other: a reason, an amount, an evidence form and a due date. The reasons are the same set Shopify uses for every card: fraudulent, unrecognized, product not received, product unacceptable, subscription canceled, duplicate, credit not processed and general.
What is special about a Visa Debit chargeback is what sits behind the card. In Canada it is a debit product that runs on a different network from Interac, and the way the payment travels depends on where it is used.
| Card use | How it travels |
|---|---|
| In person with chip and PIN | Through Interac |
| Online or by phone with the card number | Through the Visa network |
Your Shopify store is online, so the second row applies.
How does Visa Debit work online in Canada?
According to Helcim, a payment processor, Visa Debit in Canada runs on a separate network from Interac. In person chip and PIN payments go through Interac. Online or phone payments with the card number go through the Visa network, and Helcim says "Visa Debit purchases are processed as a credit card when the customer processes the transaction over-the-phone or online." The funds come from the customer's account, and the payment is declined if the money is not there.
| Point | What it means for your store |
|---|---|
| Online use goes through the Visa network | Disputes run through Visa's process |
| Processed like a credit card | Your Shopify admin treats it as a card payment |
| Funds come from the account | The customer sees the money leave at once |
| Declined if funds are unavailable | Fewer unpaid orders than with credit |
| Separate from Interac | In person debit rules do not apply to your online order |
Interac payments in person are not part of your Shopify card flow, and this guide does not cover Interac e-Transfer or any other Interac product.
Is a Visa Debit chargeback different on Shopify?
From the merchant side, no. Shopify handles the notice, the response form and the fee the same way for credit and debit. The reason codes are the same, and so is the advice: contact the customer first in every category, and if the customer agrees, they ask their bank to drop the dispute while you still submit evidence.
| Item | Visa Debit | Credit card |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify reasons | Same | Same |
| Response window | 7 to 21 days, no extensions | Same |
| Fee | C$15 or US$15 by payout currency | Same |
| Evidence limits | PDF, JPEG or PNG, 2 MB each, 4 MB combined | Same |
| Decision | Card company decides, final | Same |
| Rate impact | Counts toward your dispute rate | Same |
What can differ is the customer's experience. Their money is already gone from the account, so the customer who sees a problem tends to act fast. That is reasoning, not a measured figure. We did not find Canadian data on how quickly debit customers dispute, so treat it as a reason to answer promptly, not as a statistic.
What does Zero Liability mean for a Visa Debit chargeback?
Helcim notes that consumers get Visa's Zero Liability Policy for purchases made outside the Interac Debit network. For an online purchase, that means the customer has a policy behind them if the purchase was not theirs. This guide does not describe the terms of that policy, because the source does not, and it does not say how long it takes to apply.
| Customer point | What to take from it |
|---|---|
| Zero Liability covers purchases outside the Interac network | Online Visa Debit purchases are included |
| Terms and timing are not given in the source | Do not assume specifics |
| It protects the cardholder, not you | You still need your own evidence |
The practical point is that a customer who says "I did not make this purchase" has a policy behind them, and your evidence is the counterweight. For fraudulent and unrecognized disputes, Shopify asks for the fulfillment time, billing details, IP address and country, and shipping and tracking. Our guide to fraudulent chargebacks covers that evidence in depth.
What is Visa Claims Resolution?
TD Merchant Solutions' FAQ describes Visa Claims Resolution (VCR) as being in place in Canada since 15 April 2018. It says written merchant consent is needed before arbitration. The FAQ gives examples of evidence a merchant can provide: a copy of the original transaction, emails or texts with the cardholder, signed delivery slips and proof of credit. It does not state deadlines, so this guide does not either.
| VCR point | Source |
|---|---|
| Started 15 April 2018 | TD Merchant Solutions FAQ |
| Written merchant consent needed before arbitration | TD Merchant Solutions FAQ |
| Evidence examples: transaction copy, emails or texts, signed delivery slips, proof of credit | TD Merchant Solutions FAQ |
| Deadlines | Not stated, not covered here |
On Shopify Payments you do not deal with the card network directly. Shopify submits the evidence you provide, and the card company decides, usually within 75 days of your submission. The TD list is a useful reminder of what a reviewer expects: records of the original sale, the conversation with the cardholder and proof of delivery or refund.
What evidence should you send for a Visa Debit dispute?
The same as for any card, matched to the reason. Shopify ranks evidence from direct proof, to customer acknowledgment, to policy documentation, to supporting context.
| Reason | Shopify's list |
|---|---|
| Product not received | Proof of delivery, fulfillment date and time, billing information, shipping and tracking; for digital products an activity log |
| Product unacceptable | Same, plus product descriptions or pictures, and proof the customer did not try to return the item or you sent a replacement |
| Fraudulent or unrecognized | Fulfillment date and time, billing information, IP address and country, shipping and tracking |
| Credit not processed | Proof of refund before the chargeback, refund and return policies |
| Duplicate | Explanation, receipts for different products, communication about the charges |
| Subscription canceled | Cancellation policy, cancellation emails, proof of when the customer was told, activity log |
| General | Product details, fulfillment details, IP and country, communications, shipping confirmations, proof of refunds |
Files must be PDF, JPEG or PNG, up to 2 MB each and 4 MB combined, with one file per evidence type and no links, audio or video. Use high contrast images that print in black and white and can be read without zooming.
Debit dispute evidence pack (fill in)
Order #: ______ Card type (if shown): ______
Reason: ______ Due date: ______
1. Direct proof: ______ (delivery record, activity log)
2. Acknowledgment: ______ (customer messages)
3. Policy: ______ (checkout capture, policy PDF)
4. Supporting: ______ (order, billing, fulfillment)
Customer contacted: ______ (date, channel, reply)
Cost sheet done: [ ]
If you cannot tell whether the card was debit or credit, do not worry. The evidence does not change. Your pack is built around the reason, not the card type.
Why does a Visa Debit chargeback often arrive quickly?
This is reasoning from how the product works, and we label it that way. With credit, a charge sits on a statement and is paid weeks later. With debit, the money leaves the account when the purchase clears. A customer who spots a problem sees the effect on their balance at once, and a customer short of cash may feel the loss more.
| Factor | Why it may speed up a Visa Debit chargeback |
|---|---|
| Money leaves the account at purchase | The customer sees the effect immediately |
| Balance matters day to day | A wrong charge can cause an overdraft or a declined payment |
| Zero Liability gives confidence | Customers know a policy exists |
| Online banking shows the charge instantly | Unrecognized names stand out |
Consumer data from chargeback.io shows disputes succeed 89% of the time on credit cards and 93% on debit, but those are US based consumer figures about the customer's side, not Canadian merchant outcomes. Do not read them as your odds. They do suggest that debit customers who dispute often get their money back, which is another reason to settle with them first.
How should you contact a customer after a Visa Debit chargeback?
Fast, plain and with a fix on offer. Many disputes end when the customer realises the order is on its way, or that a refund is coming.
Message to a customer after a dispute opens
Hi [first name],
I see a dispute on order #[number] for C$[amount]. I would like to fix
this directly. Could you tell me what happened? If the order did not
arrive or is not right, I will [replace or refund] today. If you have it
and are happy, please let your bank know so they can close the dispute.
[Name], [store] [phone or email]
If the customer agrees to withdraw, they can ask their bank for a withdrawal letter. Shopify says the letter must be on bank letterhead, show the case number and confirm the charge and the cancellation. A statement screenshot is not enough. It can take 30 to 90 days, so submit evidence on time and add the letter when you have it.
| Reply | Next step |
|---|---|
| "It never came" | Check tracking, replace or refund |
| "I did not order this" | Gather fraud evidence, decide on a cost sheet |
| "It was not what I expected" | Offer a return or replacement |
| "I will call my bank" | Ask them to tell the bank to close it, ask for the letter |
| No reply | File on time with what you have |
When does a refund beat a fight on a Visa Debit chargeback?
Use your own numbers. A lost dispute costs the amount, the fee and your time. The fee is C$15 or US$15, charged at filing and returned only on a win.
Fight or refund: debit card dispute
Amount = A
Fee (C$15 or US$15) = F
Your time = T
Honest chance of winning = c (from your own history)
Refund now: loss = A
Fight and lose: loss = A + F + T
Fight and win: loss = T
Fight when (1 - c) x (A + F) + T < A
| Your record | Usual call |
|---|---|
| Delivery proof matches, customer silent | Fight |
| Customer agrees by message | Fight lightly, ask for the bank's letter |
| Evidence thin, amount small | Refund |
| Fraud coded, little to show | Cost sheet decides |
| Refund already sent before the chargeback | Submit proof of refund |
Do not set "c" for a Visa Debit chargeback from a guessed Canadian win rate. We found no published figure. Your own history of fought and won cases is the only honest source.
How do refunds and inquiries interact with a Visa Debit dispute?
An inquiry takes no money. Review of an inquiry takes 65 to 75 days or longer. Refunding an inquiry in full blocks a chargeback, while a partial refund does not. Once a chargeback has begun, you cannot refund the order.
| Stage | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Inquiry | Refund fully to close it, or provide evidence |
| Chargeback | No refund; respond with evidence |
| After a win | The chargeback can be disputed again |
| After a loss | The decision is final |
For debit customers who need their money quickly, a prompt full refund while it is still an inquiry is often the cleanest outcome. It ends the Visa Debit dispute before it costs the fee and before it counts against your rate.
How do Visa Debit chargebacks affect your rate?
They count the same as any other. Visa's excessive threshold is 1.5% from April 2026 in the US, Canada, the EU and Asia Pacific, per chargeback.io, and it was 2.2% before that. A resolved dispute still counts toward your dispute rate, and a won chargeback can be disputed again.
Shopify can enrol a store in a network dispute resolution program when its rate reaches 1.5% over 90 days. The store faces a 10% reserve and exits once it stays under 1.00% for 30 days. A store that sells to many debit customers has no special exemption, so the answer is the same: fewer disputes through clear descriptors, tracked shipping and prompt contact.
Rate check (last 90 days)
Orders: ______
Disputes opened: ______
Rate: ______ %
Won / lost / refunded: ____ / ____ / ____

How do you prevent a Visa Debit chargeback?
The causes of a Visa Debit chargeback are the usual ones, and they apply to every card.
| Step | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Use a recognizable statement name | Customers see the charge instantly in online banking |
| Send an order confirmation and shipping updates | The customer knows what is coming |
| Save delivery records on arrival | Direct proof is ready |
| Make refunds fast | Customers choose you over the bank |
| Offer easy contact | Fewer customers go to their bank first |
| Show policies at checkout | Policy documentation exists |
Because a Visa Debit customer sees the charge in online banking at once, a name that does not match your storefront causes unrecognized disputes. Check what your customers see, and make the descriptor match the name on your site.
What do three worked Visa Debit chargebacks look like?
These cases are invented to show the reasoning. They are not real merchant data, and the numbers are examples only.
| Case 1 | Case 2 | Case 3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reason | Product not received | Unrecognized | Product unacceptable |
| Order | C$120, tracked parcel | C$65, new customer | C$210, a jacket |
| Evidence | Delivery record matches address | Billing and IP details, no messages | Listing photos, customer never contacted you |
| Fee | C$15 | C$15 | C$15 |
| Honest call | Fight | Cost sheet, lean to fight | Offer return first, then decide |
Case 1. The Visa Debit chargeback is on a tracked order with a delivery record that matches the address. The customer has not answered a message. The cost of a defeat is C$120 plus C$15 plus an hour of work. With a strong record, the fight is worth it.
Case 2. The customer does not recognize the charge. The order was new, billing details match and the IP country is Canada. The customer may have forgotten the store name. A message that shows the product ordered often ends it, and if not, the evidence pack on fraudulent and unrecognized disputes applies.
Case 3. The customer says the jacket is not as described. You never heard from them. Shopify asks for proof the customer did not try to return the item, or that you sent a replacement. Offer a return or replacement in writing before you file, and keep the message.
Case 1 cost sheet (invented numbers)
A = C$120 F = C$15 T = 1 hour (call it C$30) c = 0.7 (your estimate)
Refund now: loss = C$120
Fight: (1 - 0.7) x (120 + 15) + 30 = 40.5 + 30 = C$70.50
70.50 < 120, so fight.
If your honest estimate of "c" was 0.2 instead, the same sum gives 0.8 x 135 + 30 = C$138, which is more than the C$120 refund. That is why the estimate matters more than the formula.
How do you set support up to head off a Visa Debit dispute?
Debit customers tend to act fast, so response time is your best defence against a Visa Debit chargeback. A reply within a day often keeps a customer from calling their bank.
| Support habit | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Reply the same day to order problems | The customer has an option before the bank |
| Put the order number and amount in every reply | No confusion about which charge |
| Offer a fix in the first message | Replacement or refund, not a debate |
| Give a direct contact for urgent cases | Customers short of cash want speed |
| Log every contact | Customer messages are evidence |
First reply to an order problem
Hi [first name],
Thanks for telling me about order #[number]. I am sorry about the trouble.
Here is what I can do today: [replace / refund / track the parcel]. Tell me
which you prefer and I will start straight away. Your card statement shows
this charge as [descriptor].
[Name], [store]
Quoting the statement name in the first reply stops many unrecognized claims before they begin. A customer who reads "[descriptor]" next to the order number can match the line in online banking.
How do you review Visa Debit disputes each quarter?
A Visa Debit dispute is rarely a one-off. Reviewing the last 90 days shows what to fix.
| Question | What the answer tells you |
|---|---|
| How many were unrecognized? | Your descriptor or confirmation emails need work |
| How many were not received? | Shipping updates or delivery records need work |
| How many came with no prior contact? | Customers cannot find support |
| How many did you win when you fought? | Whether your evidence holds up |
| How many cost more than they were worth? | Where a refund would have been cheaper |
Quarterly review
Disputes this quarter: ____
Unrecognized: ____
Not received: ____
Not as described: ____
Other: ____
Fought / won / lost / refunded: ____ / ____ / ____ / ____
Fees paid (payout currency): ____
Biggest cause: ______________
One change for next quarter: ______________
Pick one change per quarter. For Visa Debit chargebacks, a clearer descriptor or a faster first reply often reduces debit card disputes more than any amount of better evidence.
How does ChargeFix help with a Visa Debit chargeback?
ChargeFix works with Shopify Payments disputes, including Visa Debit chargebacks, and builds the case from your own records, so it does not depend on the card type.
- Dispute fetched. ChargeFix fetches the chargeback when it opens.
- Order read. It reads the order, fulfillment, tracking and billing details from your store.
- Evidence scored. Each item is checked and gaps get a fix, such as a missing delivery record.
- Plain verdict. Worth fighting, improve the evidence first or weak evidence.
- Letter from facts. The response is drafted only from verified facts.
- You approve. Manual mode is the default. Auto mode, on Starter plans and above, is off until you turn it on and confirm. Its default rule is product not received with delivery confirmed, and everything else is saved as a draft.
You still bring what only you have, such as customer messages and carrier records. ChargeFix cannot promise a win. It stores minimal data: case ID, amount, reason, status, dates and shop settings, not customer names, addresses, emails or letters. The free plan covers 2 filings a month, and every paid plan starts with a 14 day trial.
What does a dated plan for a Visa Debit dispute look like?
This plan assumes the shortest window, 7 days.

| Up to 75 days later | Card company decides | Record the result |
What is different about Visa Debit chargebacks for Canadian stores?
Most guides to Visa Debit chargebacks are written for US debit, where cards often run on PIN networks. Canada's Visa Debit has its own shape.
| Topic | What applies in Canada | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Network | Online use goes through Visa, not Interac | Treat it like a credit card |
| Processing | Processed like a credit card online | Use the standard evidence pack |
| Zero Liability | Applies outside the Interac network | Expect customers to know they are covered |
| Fee currency | C$15 or US$15 by payout currency | Cost cases in your payout currency |
| Deadlines and win rates | Not published in sources we found | Use your own history |
| Complaints | Code of Conduct for the Credit and Debit Card Industry | Raise a complaint with your processor first |
Complaints. Shopify Payments (Canada) acknowledges a complaint within 5 business days and gives a final written decision within 45 days. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada supervises the Code but is not a dispute resolution agency for individual cases.
What we did not verify. This guide does not state Canadian Visa Debit dispute deadlines, win rates, the share of online payments made by Visa Debit or how Canadian issuers behave. If you need those, ask your processor or Shopify support.
What are the 10 mistakes to avoid with Visa Debit disputes in Canada?
- Treating debit as a different process. Shopify's rules are the same.
- Quoting a guessed win rate. None is published for Canada.
- Ignoring the customer. Contacting them first ends many disputes.
- Waiting on a refund after a chargeback starts. You cannot refund once it has begun.
- Missing the inquiry window. A full refund at that stage stops a chargeback.
- Unclear statement name. Debit customers see charges instantly.
- Thin delivery proof. Direct proof ranks first with Shopify.
- Oversized files. Shopify limits files to 2 MB each and 4 MB combined.
- Costing in the wrong currency. Use your payout currency.
- Skipping the review. The same cause will return.
FAQs
What is a Visa Debit chargeback for a Canadian store?
It is a card dispute opened by the issuing bank on a Visa Debit payment. On Shopify it follows the same reasons, response window and fee as any card dispute. Online, a Canadian Visa Debit purchase runs on the Visa network and is processed like a credit card, according to Helcim.
Is a Visa Debit chargeback different from a credit card dispute?
From the merchant side, no. Shopify uses the same reasons, the same 7 to 21 day window, the same fee and the same evidence. What differs is the customer's position: money has already left their account, so they may act sooner. That is reasoning from how debit works, not a measured rate.
Does Interac matter for a Visa Debit chargeback online?
Not for card disputes. Helcim says in person chip and PIN payments on Visa Debit go through Interac, while online or phone payments with the card number go through the Visa network. Your Shopify store takes online payments, so the Visa route applies. This guide does not cover Interac e-Transfer.
What is Zero Liability?
Helcim notes that consumers get Visa's Zero Liability Policy for purchases made outside the Interac Debit network. That includes online Visa Debit purchases. The source does not give the policy's terms or timing, so this guide does not either. Your evidence still matters in any dispute.
What is Visa Claims Resolution?
TD Merchant Solutions' FAQ dates Visa Claims Resolution in Canada from 15 April 2018, and says the merchant must consent in writing before arbitration. It lists examples of evidence: a copy of the original transaction, emails or texts with the cardholder, signed delivery slips and proof of credit.
What are the deadlines on Visa Debit disputes in Canada?
We did not find published Canadian Visa Debit dispute deadlines, so none is given here. On Shopify Payments your response window is 7 to 21 days with no extensions. After you respond, the card company decides, usually within 75 days, and the decision is final.
What are the win rates?
We found no published Canadian Visa Debit win rate. Chargeback.io reports that consumer disputes succeed 89% on credit and 93% on debit, but those are US based consumer figures. Use your own history of fought and won cases when you cost a dispute.
Should I refund or fight a Visa Debit chargeback?
Run the cost sheet. A lost dispute costs the amount, the C$15 or US$15 fee and your time. Fight when your honest chance and your evidence justify it, and refund quickly when the record is thin. A full refund on an inquiry stops a chargeback from starting.
How does ChargeFix help?
ChargeFix fetches the dispute, reads your order, fulfillment and billing data, scores the evidence and drafts the letter from verified facts. It builds the case from your records, so it works the same for debit and credit. It stores minimal data and cannot promise a win.
Does a Visa Debit chargeback count toward my rate?
Yes. Every dispute counts toward your rate, even a resolved one. Visa's excessive threshold is 1.5% from April 2026, per chargeback.io, and Shopify can enrol a store in a network program at 1.5% over 90 days. Debit gets no exemption.
Start free trial with ChargeFix
