A Moncton home goods store has its best week ever: 410 orders between Black Friday and Boxing Day. In the new year the disputes start to arrive, three on a Monday, five on a Thursday, one on a day when the owner is away skiing. Each has a due date, some as short as 7 days, and the notices land while the team is still clearing a backlog of holiday returns. By February the store has lost 11 disputes it could have won, most because nobody opened the email in time. Boxing Day chargebacks in Canada follow a pattern: the sale happens in a rush, the parcels run late, the returns pile up and the disputes arrive weeks after the staff have gone quiet. This guide gives you a calendar and a set of settings that get ahead of that pattern.
Quick answer: Peak season chargebacks come from late parcels, unrecognized charges on busy statements, returns that are not processed in time and unanswered notices. Canada Post's 2026 peak period runs from 2 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, and from 2 November it will accept a late delivery claim on three domestic services only when the item is well past its delivery standard. So set return rules before the sale, send delay emails early and assign someone to open dispute notices every business day, including the days between Boxing Day and New Year's.
This guide is for you if:
- You run a Shopify store in Canada that takes a large share of its sales in November and December.
- You want to avoid the January and February wave of Boxing Day chargebacks that follows the sales.
- You need a dated plan, settings to change before the sale and a rule for who answers disputes while the team is away.

Disclosure: ChargeFix publishes this guide and sells an app that helps with Shopify Payments disputes. The Shopify rules come from Shopify's Help Center, the peak season dates and surcharges come from a Canada Post customer notice posted on 2 September 2026, and the claims rules come from Canada Post's claims page. Statements about carrier volume come from a shipping vendor's blog and are labelled as such. Where a page does not say, this guide says so rather than guess.
TL;DR
- Canada Post's peak period for 2026 runs from 2 November 2026 to 10 January 2027.
- From 2 November, a late claim on the main domestic services needs a longer delay than before.
- Set return rules and a holiday return window before the sale, because Shopify applies changes to future orders only.
- Boxing Day chargebacks can arrive weeks or months later, so staff the inbox in January and February too.
- Delay emails sent early are cheaper than holiday chargebacks opened late. Boxing Day chargebacks follow slow refunds.
Do this today
- Check your Shopify return rules and decide on a holiday return window before the sale starts.
- Write your shipping cutoff dates with a one to three business day buffer.
- Name one person who opens dispute notices every business day through to the end of February.
- Draft a delay email you can send to every affected order in two clicks.
- Save a dated copy of your policies and your sale page.
Boxing Day chargebacks in Canada: the process in one table
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Read the dispute | Reason, amount, order, due date | The window is usually 7 to 21 days, with no extensions |
| 2. Check the date it was placed | Sale order or regular order | Sale terms may differ |
| 3. Pull delivery proof | Tracking, delivery confirmation, signature if used | Late is not the same as not delivered |
| 4. Check returns | Return request, label, refund record | Many holiday disputes are refund disputes |
| 5. Gather messages | Delay emails, customer replies | Shows you were open with the buyer |
| 6. Decide | Fight, refund or concede | No refund is possible once a chargeback begins |
| 7. Build and file | Strongest proof first, labelled files | Shopify submits on the due date with whatever it has |
Why do Boxing Day chargebacks happen?
Sale seasons put pressure on every part of the order. More parcels run late, more orders are gifts, more charges land on the statements of people who are not paying close attention and more returns arrive in the same fortnight. When a refund or a parcel is late, the quickest route for a customer is a call to the bank. That is why holiday chargebacks bunch up in January.
| Cause | What happens | Typical reason |
|---|---|---|
| Parcel arrives after the promised date | Buyer says it never came or came too late | Product not received |
| Gift order disputed by someone else on the card | Family member does not recognize the charge | Fraudulent or unrecognized |
| Return sent but refund not issued yet | Buyer sees no credit on the statement | Credit not processed |
| Item sold at sale price, buyer disagrees about the terms | Buyer expected an exchange or a price adjustment | General or product unacceptable |
| Order cancelled but charge stays | Buyer sees the amount on the statement | Credit not processed or duplicate |
| Store unreachable over the holidays | Buyer cannot get an answer | Any of the above |
Notice that the cause in most rows is a delay, not a deception. That is good news for anyone facing Boxing Day chargebacks, because delays can be communicated and returns can be processed quickly.
What does Canada Post say about the 2026 peak period?
Canada Post posted a customer notice on 2 September 2026 for the peak season. It sets the peak period from Monday 2 November 2026 through Sunday 10 January 2027, for items mailed in that window. It says Canada Post will honour late delivery claims only if an item arrives two or more business days after the delivery standard, and that this applies to Priority, Xpresspost and Expedited Parcel mailed within Canada. It also raises two surcharges during the peak window.
| Item | Before peak | During the peak period |
|---|---|---|
| Late delivery claim threshold | Existing rules | Arrival two or more business days past the standard |
| Oversize and Unpackaged surcharge | 21 | 30 |
| Out-of-spec surcharge | 300 | 400 |
The notice lists no other changes to the delivery standard and gives no weekend delivery information or last shipping dates, so do not promise cutoffs that Canada Post has not published. For furniture and large items, see our guide on furniture chargebacks, which covers the size limits that trigger the oversize surcharge.
How do carriers behave in a peak season?
A shipping vendor's blog on the 2026 carrier schedule, last modified 15 October 2026, says volume typically surges in early November, with spikes around Black Friday and Cyber Monday and pressure through mid-December. It also says transit times can stretch in peak, that weekend parcel delivery is mainly offered in high volume periods and is not guaranteed nationwide, and it recommends a one to three business day buffer on Q4 delivery promises. These are general carrier trends from a vendor, not Canada Post policy, so use them as planning guidance. Check the published delivery standard for each service you use, and build your checkout promises on that standard plus a buffer.
| Planning point | Vendor guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Early November surge | Volume rises | Ship promptly and keep tracking uploaded |
| Black Friday and Cyber Monday spikes | Delays possible | Set expectations at checkout |
| Mid-December pressure | Transit times may stretch | Add a buffer to cutoff dates |
| Remote areas | One to two day buffer suggested | Tell remote buyers earlier |
| Weekend delivery | Not guaranteed nationwide | Do not promise it |
The same blog says Canada Post is closed on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and other statutory holidays, with no pickups or deliveries. It does not mention Boxing Day, and we found no official Canada Post statement about it, so check Canada Post's site for the current status of any specific day.
What do the cardholder time limits mean for Black Friday chargebacks?
Black Friday chargebacks do not arrive on the day of the sale. A Chargeback.io guide to Mastercard, dated August 2026, says cardholders generally have 120 days from the transaction to file a chargeback, and some reason codes extend that further. A vendor article on American Express says cardholders generally have 120 days there too. We did not find a Visa figure in our sources, so we state none.
| Order date | 120 days later | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Black Friday, 27 November 2026 | 27 March 2027 | Disputes can still arrive in late March |
| Cyber Monday, 30 November 2026 | 30 March 2027 | Same |
| Boxing Day, 26 December 2026 | 25 April 2027 | Disputes can arrive in late April |
The table assumes a 120 day limit counted from the order date, which is the figure the sources give. Your own risk window therefore runs well past the sale. Keep your evidence and your dispute inbox in good shape through the spring.
Which Shopify settings should you change before the sale?
Shopify applies rule changes to future orders only, so make them before the sale begins. The settings live in Settings, then Policies.
| Setting | Options in Shopify | Why it matters for peak season |
|---|---|---|
| Return window | 14 days, 30 days, 90 days, unlimited or custom days | A holiday window that covers January avoids "too late to return" arguments |
| Starting from | Item's delivery or delivery of last item in order | Starting from delivery protects buyers of late parcels |
| Extend for weekends or holidays | On or off | Rolls the window to the next business day |
| Return shipping | Free, flat rate or customer-purchased label | Say who pays before the sale |
| Restocking fee | Percentage, deducted manually when you refund | Fees are not deducted automatically |
| Final sale items | By collection or by product | Mark clearance collections before the sale |
| Return window overrides | By collection or product, shortest window wins | Give gifts a longer window than clearance |
| Cancellation rules | No cancellations, until fulfilled, 15 minutes, 1 hour or 24 hours | Decide how long buyers can cancel |
Shopify's page also says the written return and refund policy appears in the checkout footer once saved, and that its template does not include your configured return rules. Read the written policy and the rules side by side so they say the same thing. These settings decide how many holiday chargebacks you face in February.
What should your holiday return policy say?
A good policy removes the argument before it starts. Keep the words plain and put the dates in.
Holiday return policy (adapt to your store)
Orders placed from 20 November 2026 to 26 December 2026 can be returned
until 31 January 2027, counted from the day your parcel is delivered.
Items must be unused and in original packaging. Clearance items marked
"final sale" cannot be returned. We email a prepaid return label on request
[or: return shipping is paid by the customer].
We issue your refund to the original card within [number] business days of
receiving the parcel. We email you when it is processed. Your bank may take
additional time to show it.
Questions: [email address], [phone number]
State whatever you actually do. If you change the window mid-season, tell customers in the order confirmation email, because the policy appears at checkout and again on the order review page. Our guide to late return windows covers arguments about dates, and the credit not processed guide covers refunds.
How do you reduce late parcel holiday chargebacks?
Send what you know, early. A buyer who has been told about a delay rarely needs the bank, and most holiday chargebacks about late parcels start with silence.
| Moment | What to send | Why |
|---|---|---|
| At checkout | Cutoff dates and expected delivery with a buffer | Sets the expectation |
| At order | Confirmation with items, address and statement name | Lets the buyer recognize the charge |
| At shipment | Tracking link | The buyer can watch the parcel |
| When a carrier delay shows | A short delay email | Shows you are on top of it |
| After delivery | A thank you and a contact line | Opens the door to a message before a dispute |
Delay email (adapt to your store)
Subject: An update on your order #[number]
Hi [first name],
Your parcel is moving more slowly than usual because of the holiday rush.
Tracking shows [status] as of [date]. We expect delivery by [date range].
If it has not arrived by [date], reply to this email and we will start a
trace with Canada Post. You do not need to do anything else.
[Name], [store], [phone number]
Save the email and the date you sent it. In a product not received dispute, a record that you warned the buyer and offered a trace is acknowledgment of a different kind, and it shows good faith. See our guide to order confirmation and shipping emails for wording.
What does Canada Post say about claims on late or lost parcels?
For orders that really are lost, the Canada Post claims page sets the clock. Only the sender receives claim payment. Domestic claims must start within 90 days of shipping, once the item is past its expected delivery date. Wait times before you can claim run from 1 day past the expected date for Xpresspost or Tracked Packet to 30 days for Registered Mail, and most packages arrive within 5 business days after the expected delivery date. Many services include C$100 of base coverage, and compensation is the lowest of the item value, the insurance bought or the included coverage.
| Question | Answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets paid? | The sender | You, not the buyer |
| How long to start a domestic claim? | Within 90 days of shipping | A Black Friday parcel needs a claim before late February |
| When can you claim? | After the expected delivery date, with a wait by service | Do not file too early |
| How much? | Lowest of value, insurance bought or included coverage | Cover high value orders |
| Peak rule | From 2 November, a late claim needs a longer delay | Late is not lost |
Refunding a lost parcel early, then claiming from Canada Post, is often cheaper than losing a dispute. See our guide to lost parcels: refund or fight for the arithmetic.
What evidence helps in Boxing Day chargebacks?
Think in layers. Shopify suggests direct proof first, then acknowledgment, then policy, then context.
| Layer | Evidence | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Direct proof | Tracking and delivery confirmation as PDF, signature if used | The goods arrived |
| Direct proof | Refund record | The credit was issued |
| Acknowledgment | Buyer replies, delay email replies | The buyer engaged |
| Policy | Return and shipping policy and the dated screenshot | The terms in force |
| Context | Sale page and price at the time | Shows what was offered |
| Context | Earlier orders by the same buyer | An established customer |
Shopify's list of general evidence includes an itemized receipt, the checkout confirmation and a pricing policy, which is worth remembering for sale disputes where the price is the question. Shopify Payments also adds product details, addresses, the IP address, tracking and prior orders when they are available. You supply the carrier PDF, your emails and the dated policy.
How do you answer a Boxing Day chargeback?
Lead with the delivery record or the refund record, depending on the reason.
Draft reply to a peak season chargeback (adapt to your case)
Order #[number], placed [date] for C$[amount].
Summary
The order was placed on [date] during our [sale name]. It shipped on
[date] and Canada Post records delivery on [date] at [city, province]
(record attached). We emailed the customer on [date] about a carrier
delay and offered a trace; the customer replied [summary].
1. Delivery record
Canada Post tracking and delivery confirmation PDF (file 1).
2. Messages
Delay email and customer reply (file 2).
3. Policy
Shipping and return policy as shown on [date] (file 3).
4. Order details
Itemized receipt and checkout confirmation (file 4).
If the parcel arrived late, say so plainly and show the date. A late delivery is not a non-delivery, and reviewers can tell the difference when the record is clear.
Is it worth fighting? A worked example in C$
Take a Boxing Day order of C$140.00 for a set of bedding. The buyer says the parcel never arrived. Tracking shows delivery on 8 January with a safe drop photo, and the store sent a delay email on 2 January.
Case A: delivered, delay email sent, no signature
Disputed amount = A = C$140.00
Fee = F = C$15.00 (returned only on a win)
Your time = T = 45 minutes, call it C$22
Chance of winning = c = 0.50 (illustrative)
Concede: A + F = C$155.00
Fight: (1 minus c) x 155 + 22 = 0.50 x 155 + 22 = C$99.50
99.50 < 155.00, so fight.
Now the same order with no tracking scan at all.
Case B: no delivery scan
Chance of winning = c = 0.10 (illustrative)
Fight: 0.90 x 155 + 22 = C$161.50
161.50 > 155.00, so refund early and claim from Canada Post if eligible.
The win chances are illustrative, not Canadian statistics. We found no published Canadian win rate for peak season chargebacks, so use your own history. What the calculation shows is that the carrier record decides most of these cases.
Which holiday chargebacks are worth fighting?
| Case | Likely strength | Move |
|---|---|---|
| Delivered with signature, buyer says not received | Strong | Fight, lead with the signature |
| Delivered, safe drop recorded, delay email sent | Reasonable | Fight, show tracking and messages |
| Return received, refund issued and shown | Strong | Fight, lead with the refund record |
| Return received, no refund issued | Not a fight | Refund now if still an inquiry |
| No delivery scan, trace open | Weak | Refund early, claim from the carrier |
| Gift disputed by a card holder who did not know | Mixed | Ask for a withdrawal, see our gift guide |
If you owe the refund, issue it from the admin. Shopify says you can refund while a case is an inquiry, and a full refund on an inquiry blocks a chargeback. After a chargeback begins, no refund is possible.
How does ChargeFix help with Boxing Day chargebacks?
Peak season chargebacks are a staffing problem as much as an evidence problem. The facts are in your order data, and the due dates fall in the quietest weeks of your year. ChargeFix is built for Shopify Payments disputes.
- Dispute fetched. ChargeFix fetches the chargeback when it opens, so the due date shows from day one.
- Records read. It reads the order, addresses, fulfilment and tracking data and the refund history.
- Evidence scored. It flags what is present and what is missing, such as no delivery scan or no refund record, and gives a plain verdict: worth fighting, improve the evidence first or weak evidence.
- Letter from facts. The response is drafted only from verified facts, so it will not claim a delay email your records do not show.
- Your choice of mode. ChargeFix prepares each response in Manual mode, which is the default. You review and file it, or let Auto mode handle them. Auto mode is on Starter plans and above, off until you turn it on and confirm.
ChargeFix handles Shopify Payments disputes only. It cannot promise a win, because the card company decides, and it does not contact your customers. It stores minimal data: case ID, amount, reason, status, dates and shop settings. The free plan includes 2 filings a month, and every paid plan starts with a 14 day free trial.
What does a dated plan for Boxing Day chargebacks look like in 2026?
| Date | What you do | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Now to 30 October | Set return rules, holiday window and final sale collections | Settings saved, policy matches |
| 30 October | Save dated copies of policies and sale page | Screenshots stored |
| 2 November | Canada Post peak period starts | Delay email template ready |
| 20 November | Sale starts | Cutoff dates posted |
| 27 November | Black Friday | Inbox covered |
| 30 November | Cyber Monday | Inbox covered |
| 1 to 24 December | Ship fast, upload tracking, send delay emails | No order older than a week without tracking |
| 26 December | Boxing Day sale | Coverage plan for dispute notices set |
| 27 December to 1 January | Quiet week | One person opens notices daily |
| 10 January | Peak period ends | List orders still in transit |
| January and February | Disputes arrive | Answer within 3 business days of each notice |
| Late March | 120 days from Black Friday | Review the season, update next year's plan |
Because the response window can be as short as 7 days with no extensions, a notice that sits unopened over the holiday week may have only a few days left when someone reads it. Shopify submits whatever you have on the due date, so empty evidence still goes in, and the C$15 fee is not returned on a loss. Holiday chargebacks punish slow inboxes.
How do you prepare for next year's holiday chargebacks?
- Do a post-season review. Count disputes by reason and by week.
- Fix the biggest cause. Often it is shipping promises or slow refunds.
- Rewrite cutoff dates. Use the buffers that your own data supports.
- Pick a coverage plan. Name a backup for every person who opens notices.
- Keep the evidence. The Canada Post delivery confirmation is online for 45 days, so download proof when the order is delivered.
| Habit | Time | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Post-season review | 2 hours | Next year's plan is better |
| Coverage rota | 30 minutes | No unopened notices |
| Delivery PDF download | 2 minutes per order | Proof outlives the 45 days |
| Policy screenshot | 10 minutes | Dated terms on file |
Our chargeback audit guide shows how to turn the review into a short list.
What is different about Boxing Day chargebacks in Canada?
| Topic | What applies in Canada | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fee | C$15 or US$15 by payout currency | Cost each case in your payout currency |
| Response window | 7 to 21 days, no extensions | Plan for the shortest |
| Card company decision | Up to 75 days after you submit, and final | Do not expect a quick answer |
| Delivery proof | Canada Post confirmation online for 45 days after delivery | Download it early |
| Shopify Protect | US stores only | It does not cover Canadian stores |
| Complaints | Shopify Payments (Canada) acknowledges within 5 business days, decides in writing within 45 days | Raise a complaint with your processor first |
Delivery notes. Canada Post says a Delivery Notice Card means a 15 calendar day hold, with a Final Notice after 5 days. A gift parcel carded during the holidays can sit at a post office while the buyer is away, which is how a delivered parcel becomes a dispute.
US shoppers. For parcels to the US, Canada Post says postal shipments under US$800 need prepaid duties and a Declaration ID since the US de minimis exemption was suspended on 29 August 2025. Tell US buyers before they pay. Our cross-border guide explains the options.
Quebec. If you sell to Quebec buyers, remember that French language rules apply to websites and contracts. Our Quebec guide covers what we found.
Consumer law. Consumer protection law differs by province. We found no source that sets a Canadian rule for peak season returns, so this guide states none.
Where to complain. Shopify Payments (Canada) acknowledges a complaint within 5 business days and gives a final written decision within 45 days. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada supervises the Code of Conduct for the Credit and Debit Card Industry in Canada but does not decide individual disputes.
What are the 10 mistakes to avoid with Boxing Day chargebacks?
- Changing return rules after the sale starts. Only orders placed later follow the new rules.
- No one assigned to the inbox. Boxing Day chargebacks can carry a 7 day window with no extensions.
- Promising dates Canada Post has not published. Use a buffer instead.
- Treating late as lost. Late delivery is a different case from non-delivery.
- Skipping delay emails. Silence invites a call to the bank.
- Leaving returns unprocessed over the holidays. Refund disputes follow.
- Refunding after the chargeback began. Shopify does not allow it.
- Forgetting the 120 day tail. Black Friday chargebacks arrive into spring.
- Attaching links. Links are not allowed. Save pages as PDF.
- Not saving the delivery PDF. The online record lasts 45 days.
Frequently asked questions
What are Boxing Day chargebacks?
They are card disputes on orders placed during the Black Friday to Boxing Day sale season. The causes are usually late parcels, unrecognized gift charges, unprocessed returns and unanswered messages. They tend to arrive weeks later, when staff have returned to normal work.
When does Canada Post's 2026 peak period run?
Canada Post's customer notice, posted on 2 September 2026, says the peak period starts on Monday 2 November 2026 and ends on Sunday 10 January 2027. During that window, the late claim bar rises to a delay of two business days beyond the standard.
How long after the sale can Black Friday chargebacks arrive?
Sources report that cardholders generally have 120 days to dispute a Mastercard or American Express charge. For a Black Friday order on 27 November 2026, that runs to about 27 March 2027. We found no Visa figure in our sources, so check with your processor.
What Shopify settings should I change before the sale?
Set your return window, the starting point for it, return shipping, any restocking fee and final sale collections in Settings, then Policies. Shopify applies changes to future orders only, so make them before the sale starts. Read the written policy next to the rules so they match.
Is a late parcel the same as a lost parcel in a dispute?
No. A parcel that arrived late shows a delivery date in the tracking, and that record can win a product not received dispute if the buyer asked for the goods and received them. A parcel with no scan is a different case. Refund early and claim from Canada Post where eligible.
Who gets paid on a Canada Post claim?
Only the sender receives claim payment. Domestic claims must start within 90 days of shipping, once the item is past its expected delivery date. Many services include C$100 base coverage, and compensation is the lowest of the item value, the insurance bought or the included coverage.
Can I refund a holiday order after a dispute opens?
You can refund while it is an inquiry, and a full refund on an inquiry blocks a chargeback. Once a chargeback begins, Shopify does not allow a refund. The buyer can ask their bank for a withdrawal letter, which can take 30 to 90 days.
Who should answer holiday chargebacks over the break?
Name one person and one backup to open dispute notices every business day, including the week after Christmas. Shopify submits the response on the due date even if you add nothing, and the C$15 fee is not returned if you lose.
Are there Canadian rules for peak season returns?
We found no source that sets a Canadian rule for peak season returns, so we state none. Consumer protection law differs by province. Your published policy and the Shopify return rules you set are what a reviewer will read, so make them clear and keep dated copies.
How does ChargeFix help with Boxing Day chargebacks?
ChargeFix fetches each dispute, reads the order, tracking and refund data, flags missing proof and drafts the letter from verified facts. In Manual mode, the default, you check each draft and file it yourself. Auto mode is on Starter plans and above.
Start free trial with ChargeFix
You now have a calendar, a list of settings, a holiday return policy, a delay email and a reply template.
