Your customers think Christmas delivery is a promise. Your carrier thinks it is a date. The gap between them becomes a dispute in January. Here are the 2026 cut-offs, how to set yours earlier, and what to keep when a gift goes missing.
Christmas delivery cut-offs and disputes are linked: if your cut-off is later than the carrier's last sending date, late gifts become item not received claims. Australia Post's 2026 metro last sending dates fall between Monday 14 and Wednesday 23 December, by service and route. Set your cut-off earlier, promise only what you can deliver, and keep proof.
This guide to Christmas delivery cut-offs and disputes is for you if:
- You ship gifts in December and want to set cut-off dates that hold up.
- You have had late parcels, gift complaints or January disputes before.
- You want to know what to keep so a December order is defensible in February.

The 30-second answer (TL;DR)
- Australia Post's 2026 Christmas last sending dates for metro addresses range from Monday 14 December to Wednesday 23 December, depending on the service and the route. Over-the-counter lodgement is by 2.30pm. Check your own route on Australia Post's Christmas page before you publish dates.
- Christmas Day 2026 is Friday 25 December and Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December. Shopify pays out nothing on weekends or public holidays.
- The ACCC says a business that cannot supply on time or within a reasonable time must offer a solution, and must not take payment if it knows it cannot deliver in time. It also says to give clear, accurate delivery information and update customers on delays.
- NAB's guide gives cardholders 120 days for Visa and Mastercard (varying by reason code) and 210 days for eftpos, so a December order can be disputed well into 2027.
- Gifts raise their own dispute risks: the recipient is not the cardholder, the address differs from billing and the parcel may be left unattended.
- Set your own Christmas cut-off at least a few days before the carrier's last sending date, show it clearly, and save a dated screenshot of it.
Quick note: Carrier Christmas cut-off dates change and vary by route, so the dates in this guide are a snapshot reviewed on 10 October 2026 from Australia Post's published information. We could not verify cut-offs for other carriers, so we have not stated them. The A$25 dispute fee used in the examples is a third-party figure that is also NAB's own merchant fee, so confirm Shopify's fee with Shopify Support.

How are Christmas delivery cut-offs and disputes connected?
A cut-off is a promise about when an order must be placed to arrive by Christmas. A dispute is what happens when the promise is missed. Every order that you accept after the carrier's last sending date, and that you imply will arrive for Christmas, is a possible item not received claim in the new year.
The ACCC's guidance on non-receipt applies. A business that cannot supply on time or within a reasonable time must offer a solution, such as a refund or replacement. A business must not take payment if it knows it cannot deliver in time, and should give clear, accurate information on delivery timing and update customers about delays. The ACCC says non-delivery does not automatically mean the law was broken when the cause is outside the business's control, such as postal delays, but it gives no specific number of days. So the promise you publish is the standard you will be judged against.
| Situation | Likely Shopify reason | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Gift not delivered by Christmas | Product not received | A clear cut-off, tracking, delay notice |
| Recipient says they did not get it, cardholder disputes | Product not received | Proof of delivery to the order address |
| Cardholder does not recognise the gift charge | Unrecognized | Order email naming your store |
| Gift returned, refund not seen | Credit not processed | Dated refund confirmation |
| Order flagged because shipping differs from billing | Fraudulent | Review routine and neutral question |
Why do gift orders raise dispute risk?
The person who pays is not the person who receives. A recipient who does not get the parcel may tell the buyer, and the buyer may go to their bank. A shipping address that differs from billing is also a common reason for a fraud flag, so more gift orders get reviewed. None of this is evidence of anything wrong, and it should not be treated as such. Our guide to fraud prevention on Shopify sets out a neutral review routine.
What do Shopify's pages say about delivery and disputes?
Shopify's product not received evidence includes tracking and fulfilment events, which it adds automatically, and you add your delivery photos, messages and policies. The response window is usually 7 to 21 days, the bank decides up to 75 days after you submit, and there is no appeal. Our guides to item not received disputes and Australia Post and tracking says delivered but the customer says not received cover the evidence.
What are the 2026 Australia Post Christmas cut-offs?
For metro addresses, Australia Post's last sending dates for Christmas 2026 run from Monday 14 December to Wednesday 23 December. Parcel Post within the same state is Tuesday 22 December, Express Post is Wednesday 23 December, and Regular Post within the same state is Monday 21 December. Interstate dates are earlier and vary by route.
| Service (metro) | Last sending date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Parcel Post, same state | Tue 22 Dec | |
| Parcel Post, interstate | Mon 14 to Mon 21 Dec | Varies by route |
| Express Post | Wed 23 Dec | Tue 22 Dec for NT or from WA |
| Regular Post, same state | Mon 21 Dec | |
| Regular Post, interstate | Fri 18 Dec | |
| Over-the-counter lodgement | By 2.30pm on the date |
Australia Post publishes the full route matrix on its Christmas page, and dates can be updated. We reviewed them on 10 October 2026. Check your own routes before you publish a cut-off, and check again in early December. We could not verify dates for other carriers, so ask yours for a written schedule. The Australia Post ecommerce calendar also lists Click Frenzy on 12 November, Black Friday on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November 2026, which feed into the same December volume. See Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks.
How do you set your own Christmas cut-off?
Start from the carrier's last sending date for your slowest common route and subtract your handling time and a buffer. The buffer protects you when your warehouse is busy or a parcel misses a scan. Then publish the result as a date and time with the service it applies to, in your store's time zone.
Illustration: working back from the carrier. Your most common interstate route has an Australia Post Parcel Post last sending date of Friday 18 December 2026. You need two business days to pick and pack, so the last order you can accept for that route is Wednesday 16 December. Add a one-day buffer and your published cut-off is Tuesday 15 December. Orders placed after that are labelled "Expected after Christmas" at checkout. The same store's same-state route has a last sending date of Tuesday 22 December. Two business days earlier is Friday 18 December, and with a one-day buffer, Thursday 17 December.
| Route | Carrier last sending date | Handling | Your cut-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interstate, Parcel Post | Fri 18 Dec | 2 business days plus 1 day buffer | Tue 15 Dec |
| Same state, Parcel Post | Tue 22 Dec | 2 business days plus 1 day buffer | Thu 17 Dec |
| Express Post | Wed 23 Dec | 1 business day plus 1 day buffer | Mon 21 Dec |
These are examples to show the method, not recommendations for your business. Use your own handling times and your own routes. If a route's date is Mon 14 December, work back the same way.
What should the Christmas cut-off message say?
Put it on the product page, at checkout and in the confirmation email, with the date, the time zone and the service. State what happens to orders placed after it. Keep a dated screenshot of each place it appears. The ACCC says to give clear, accurate delivery information, and the screenshot is your proof that you did.
CHRISTMAS CUT-OFF NOTICE (EXAMPLE WORDING)
Order by 11:59 PM Tue 15 Dec (AEDT) for Christmas delivery to most
interstate addresses. Order by 11:59 PM Thu 17 Dec (AEDT) for Christmas
delivery within your state. Orders after these times will still ship, but
are expected to arrive after Christmas. Delivery estimates are shown at
checkout.
What should you do about Christmas delivery cut-offs and disputes before 15 December?
Publish the dates, brief your team, confirm your carrier's schedule and save the proof. The weeks before the last sending dates are the cheapest time to prevent January disputes, because every fix is still possible. The checklist below follows the ACCC's rules on clear delivery information and Shopify's evidence guidance.
CHRISTMAS CHECKLIST (START BY MON 23 NOV 2026)
[ ] Carrier last sending dates confirmed in writing for each route you use
[ ] Your own cut-off dates set earlier than the carrier's, per route and service
[ ] Cut-off notice on product pages, at checkout and in the confirmation email
[ ] Dated screenshots of each notice saved to the evidence folder
[ ] Gift orders: a field or note for gift messages and a recipient phone number
[ ] Delivery estimate at checkout updated for December volume
[ ] Delay message template ready, with a refund option
[ ] Proof of delivery options confirmed with the carrier
[ ] Refund and returns policy for gifts written and shown at checkout
[ ] Staff cover for 24 Dec to 4 Jan; the owner email is monitored daily
[ ] Cash buffer for January disputes and refunds
What happens to payouts over Christmas?
No payouts are made on weekends or public holidays, according to Shopify's payout timing page, and the Australian minimum is 2 business days, with the bank adding 1 to 3. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December and Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December in 2026, so no payout can land on either. Public holidays that follow vary by state, so check your state's calendar. Orders you take in the last days before Christmas will pay out later than you may expect, so keep supplier and wage money ready.
How does a December sale affect your reserve and dispute risk?
Shopify's reserves page names volume surges and an increased refund rate among its reserve factors, so a heavy December can feed a reserve in the new year. It gives no Australian figure. See Shopify Payments reserve in Australia and chargeback rate and account health warnings.
How do late gifts turn into Christmas disputes?
A gift that misses Christmas is often a missed event, not just a late parcel, and the buyer's frustration is higher. Many will contact you first, and some will go to their bank. Fast, honest messages can keep the first group away from the second. AFCA tells customers to contact the merchant first and says the bank may ask how they tried to resolve it.
Illustration: a late gift, with dates. A customer orders a A$132.00 gift (A$120.00 plus A$12.00 shipping) on Tuesday 15 December 2026. It ships on Wednesday 16 December by interstate Parcel Post, but tracking stalls. The recipient does not receive it. On Monday 4 January 2027 the buyer opens a dispute for product not received. Assuming a 21-day window, evidence is due Monday 25 January. You submit on Friday 15 January, and the latest decision is 75 days later, on Wednesday 31 March 2027.
| Date | Event | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 15 Dec 2026 | Order placed, A$132.00 | Cut-off notice screenshot from this day |
| Wed 16 Dec 2026 | Order shipped | Tracking saved |
| Fri 25 Dec 2026 | Christmas Day | No payouts; no delivery |
| Mon 4 Jan 2027 | Dispute opened, product not received | Amount and fee taken at once |
| Fri 15 Jan 2027 | Evidence submitted | Cannot be edited after "Submit now" |
| Mon 25 Jan 2027 | Due date, assuming 21 days | Shopify submits on the due date even with no evidence |
| Wed 31 Mar 2027 | Latest bank decision | No appeal; a win can be re-disputed |
Now the money. The goods cost you A$55.00 and postage A$12.00, so A$67.00 has left your business. At the reported A$25.00 fee, a lost dispute nets A$132.00 less A$132.00 less A$25.00 less A$67.00, which is minus A$92.00. A win nets A$132.00 less A$67.00, which is A$65.00. A refund after dispatch, before any dispute, costs the A$67.00 you have already spent, so it is minus A$67.00, which is A$25.00 cheaper than losing. We ignore processing fees, because Shopify's pages do not say whether they are returned.
| Outcome | Net result |
|---|---|
| Lose the dispute | minus A$92.00 |
| Win the dispute | A$65.00 |
| Refund after dispatch, before any dispute | minus A$67.00 |
The 75 days run from Friday 15 January to Wednesday 31 March 2027. We could not confirm how weekends and public holidays affect due dates, so submit early. Our guide to the Shopify chargeback deadline covers the clock, and responding to a Shopify Payments dispute covers the response.
What should you say to a customer whose gift is late?
Say what you know, give a date or an option, and offer a refund to the original payment method. Do it before they ask. The ACCC says to update customers on delays and to offer a solution when you cannot supply on time or within a reasonable time.
Subject: An update on your order #[number]
Hello [name],
Your order was dispatched on [date], and the carrier shows [status]. We are
sorry it has not arrived in time for Christmas.
Here is what we can do:
1. Keep chasing the carrier and update you by [date].
2. Send a replacement now, if we have stock.
3. Refund A$[amount] to the card you paid with straight away.
Reply with 1, 2 or 3, or call us on [number].
Regards,
[Store name]
Once a chargeback is open, Shopify says no refund is possible until the cardholder drops it, which needs a letter from their bank. Our guides to refunding a customer who opened a dispute and to what to say when a customer threatens a chargeback cover both situations.
What proof should you keep for December orders?
The notice, the tracking, the delivery record and the messages. A December dispute may be decided in March or later, so keep the evidence together and labelled. Shopify auto-includes order details, addresses, IP, fulfilment and tracking, refunds, and prior orders and disputes. You add the cut-off screenshot, messages, policies and delivery photos.
| Evidence | What it shows | Who has it |
|---|---|---|
| Cut-off notice screenshots | What you promised and when | You |
| Tracking and fulfilment events | The parcel was handed to the carrier | Auto-included |
| Carrier proof of delivery | Where and when it was delivered | The carrier |
| Delay message and replies | You updated the customer | You |
| Gift message and recipient details | The order was a gift | The order |
| Refund and returns policy | Terms shown at checkout | You |
The format rules are PDF, JPEG or PNG, up to 2 MB per file and 4 MB in total, one file per evidence type. Shopify does not accept links, audio or video, so use screenshots. Put the strongest proof first and label each item with its type, date and what it shows. Our guide to evidence to save at fulfilment lists more.
Does proof of delivery from Australia Post settle it?
It helps. Australia Post's authority-to-leave page says the driver photographs where the parcel is left. It does not address liability, so a photo shows where the parcel was left, not that the recipient got it. Aramex offers a proof of delivery photo through its portal, and Shippit says not every delivery has a photo. We could not verify Sendle or StarTrack. See authority to leave and safe place delivery and wrong address chargebacks.
How do gift returns and refunds work after Christmas?
The same consumer law applies in January as in June. The ACCC says a major problem means a full refund to the original payment form, and for a minor problem the seller chooses repair, replace or refund. Change of mind gives no right unless your policy offers one, and a "no refunds" sign cannot deny these rights. A gift recipient is not your customer under the contract, so refunds go back to the buyer's original payment method.
| Gift scenario | Position | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Item faulty | Major or minor problem rules apply | ACCC |
| Recipient does not like it | No right unless your policy offers one | ACCC |
| Policy offers gift returns until a date | You must honour it | Your policy |
| Return shipping for a confirmed problem | Reimbursed | ACCC |
| Refund to the recipient in cash | Refund goes to the original payment form | ACCC |
If you extend your return window for the season, say so with the end date in the confirmation email and on the product page, and save a screenshot. Our guides to change of mind refunds, writing a refund policy and major vs minor failures give the wording.
How long can a December order be disputed?
NAB's guide gives cardholders 120 days for Visa and Mastercard, varying by reason code, and 210 days for eftpos. For an order on Tuesday 22 December 2026, 120 days runs to about Wednesday 21 April 2027 and 210 days to about Tuesday 20 July 2027, if the count runs from the order date. The start point varies by scheme and reason code, so treat those as the order of magnitude. See chargeback time limits in Australia.
How should you review Christmas delivery cut-offs and disputes in January?
Sit down in the second week of January with your orders, your tracking and your disputes, and ask which Christmas cut-off worked and which did not. Each December dispute is a data point about a delivery cut-off that was too late, a route that was slower than the carrier's schedule or a message that came too late. Fix those before next year.
| Question | Where to look | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Which routes had late parcels? | Tracking exports by destination | Move that route's cut-off earlier |
| Which orders were placed just before the cut-off? | Order dates against dispatch dates | Add a larger buffer |
| Which customers contacted you first? | Support inbox | Send delay notices sooner |
| Which Christmas disputes were product not received? | Dispute list, reason column | Strengthen delivery proof |
| Which disputes were unrecognized? | Dispute list, reason column | Improve the order email and store name |
| Did the cut-off notice appear everywhere? | Your saved screenshots | Fill the gaps |
Illustration: a January review. In the week from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 December 2026, a store takes A$21,600.00 across 180 orders. At the standard online card rate of 1.7% plus 30 cents for the Basic plan, processing is A$421.20 (1.7% of A$21,600.00 is A$367.20, and 180 orders at 30 cents is A$54.00), so net takings are A$21,178.80. By mid-January, 6 Christmas disputes have arrived, averaging A$120.00, which with the reported A$25.00 fee each cost A$870.00 (6 times A$145.00). That is about 3.3% of the week's orders (6 divided by 180 is 0.0333), and it is a tracking number only, because Shopify gives no threshold. If four of the six were for parcels on one interstate route, the fix is a delivery cut-off for that route that is a few days earlier next year.
Are Christmas disputes different from other disputes?
The process is the same: the amount and fee are taken at once, the response window is usually 7 to 21 days, the bank decides up to 75 days after you submit and there is no appeal. What differs is timing. A Christmas dispute lands when you are back from leave, with several due dates close together. Diarise each due date the day it arrives, and sort by due date.
Should your Christmas cut-off differ by product?
Yes, if lead times differ. Made-to-order and personalised goods need a much earlier cut-off than stock items, and pre-orders need a clear arrival date. Our guide to pre-order and backorder refunds and disputes covers what to promise, and Shopify's reserves page names long delivery industries, including pre-orders and custom orders, as a reserve factor.
What's different for Australian merchants?
December falls in summer, school holidays and a run of public holidays. The carriers' dates are Australian and route-specific. Payouts skip weekends and public holidays. Consumer law applies to gifts. And the A$ dispute fee is unconfirmed.
- Carrier dates. Australia Post's metro last sending dates for 2026 run from Monday 14 to Wednesday 23 December, by service and route.
- Public holidays. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December and Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December, with further public holidays varying by state.
- Payouts. The Australian minimum is 2 business days, with no payouts on weekends or public holidays, and the bank adds 1 to 3 business days.
- Cardholders. Eftpos is Australia's local debit scheme, co-badged with Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay. See debit vs credit card chargebacks.
- Fees. The pricing page lists card rates, with no dispute fee. The Australian terms allow a separate investigation fee on notice, with no amount.
What are the most common mistakes with Christmas delivery cut-offs and disputes?
Setting your cut-off the same as the carrier's is the first. The second is promising Christmas delivery without checking the route, and the third is going quiet when a parcel stalls. After those come missing screenshots and a thin cash buffer.
- Using the carrier's date as your Christmas cut-off. Leave handling time and a buffer.
- Not checking the route for your Christmas cut-off. Interstate dates differ from same-state dates.
- Promising Christmas delivery on late orders. The ACCC says not to take payment if you know you cannot deliver in time.
- Going silent on delays. The ACCC says to update customers.
- No screenshots of the Christmas cut-off notice. The notice is your evidence of the promise.
- No proof of delivery option. Ask the carrier what it provides.
- Spending December takings. January disputes take the amount and fee at once.
- Missing January due dates. Shopify submits on the due date even with no evidence.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Australia Post Christmas cut-offs for 2026?
For metro addresses, last sending dates run from Monday 14 to Wednesday 23 December 2026, depending on service and route. Parcel Post within a state is Tuesday 22 December, Express Post is Wednesday 23 December, and Regular Post within a state is Monday 21 December. Check your route on Australia Post's Christmas page.
What delivery cut-off should I publish?
One earlier than the carrier's last sending date, after your handling time and a buffer. For example, an interstate Parcel Post date of Friday 18 December, two business days of handling and a day's buffer gives Tuesday 15 December. Use your own routes and handling times, and show the date at checkout.
Can I take orders after my Christmas cut-off?
Yes, if you say clearly that they will arrive after Christmas. The ACCC says a business must not take payment if it knows it cannot deliver in time, and should give clear, accurate delivery information. Label late orders "Expected after Christmas" at checkout and in the confirmation email.
What if a gift arrives late and leads to a Christmas dispute?
Tell the buyer early, offer a refund or replacement and keep the messages. The ACCC says a business that cannot supply on time or within a reasonable time must offer a solution. If the buyer disputes anyway, respond by the due date with tracking, delivery proof and your cut-off screenshot.
How long can a Christmas dispute arrive after a December order?
NAB's guide gives cardholders 120 days for Visa and Mastercard, varying by reason code, and 210 days for eftpos. For an order on 22 December 2026, that is about late April and about late July 2027, if the count runs from the order date. The start point varies by scheme.
Does Australia Post proof of delivery stop a Christmas dispute?
It helps but does not settle it. Australia Post says the driver photographs where the parcel is left for authority to leave, and the page does not address liability. A photo shows where it was left, not that the recipient received it. Combine it with tracking and your messages.
Do payouts stop over Christmas?
Shopify's payout timing page says no payouts are made on weekends or public holidays. Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday and Boxing Day is a Saturday, so none can land on those days, and further public holidays vary by state. The Australian minimum is 2 business days, plus 1 to 3 for the bank.
Should I extend my returns window for gifts?
It is your choice, and the ACCC says change of mind gives no right unless your policy offers one. If you extend it, state the end date on the product page and in the confirmation email, save a dated screenshot and honour it. Faulty items are covered by consumer law regardless of your policy.
Can I refund a customer who has opened a Christmas dispute?
Not while the chargeback is open. Shopify says no refund is possible until the cardholder drops it, which needs a letter on bank letterhead with the case number. An inquiry is different: a full refund means the cardholder cannot start a chargeback. Check which type you have first.
