Wrong address chargebacks on Shopify in Australia: what to do

ChargeFix guide cover with a shield icon: Wrong address chargebacks on Shopify in Australia: what to do

The parcel went exactly where the label said. The courier scanned it as delivered, the tracking page is clean, and you did everything right. Then the customer says it was never theirs to receive, because the address on the order was not their address.

A wrong address chargeback is one of the messiest disputes an Australian Shopify store can face, because nobody has to be lying for it to happen. A mistyped unit number, a work address chosen in a rush, an edit after checkout, or a courier who delivered one door down can each produce the same email from Shopify. This guide explains the five ways a wrong address happens, who carries the loss in each, what to send as evidence, and how to stop it recurring.

This guide is for you if:

  • A customer says their order went to the wrong address and has disputed it with their bank.
  • You have delivered orders returning as "delivered but not received" and suspect address errors behind them.
  • You want checkout and fulfilment habits that make wrong address disputes rare and winnable.

The 30-second answer (TL;DR)

  • A wrong address chargeback is a "product not received" dispute where the real issue is the delivery address, not the delivery itself.
  • Shopify automatically includes the order details and the billing and shipping addresses in your evidence. You add the delivery record, the customer's own address entry, and any messages.
  • Who loses depends on who made the error. If the customer typed it, your position is strong. If you changed it, or the courier misdelivered, it is weak.
  • Compare three delivery address records: the one the customer entered, the one on the label, and the one the courier delivered to. A mismatch at any step tells you where the error happened.
  • If the dispute is an inquiry, a full refund ends it. An open chargeback cannot be refunded.
  • Never edit an address after checkout without a written request from the customer. That message is your best evidence.
  • Files must be PDF, JPEG or PNG, up to 2 MB each and 4 MB in total, with one file per evidence type, and no links.

Quick note: The question a reviewer asks is simple: did the parcel go to the address the customer gave you? If you can show it did, in the customer's own words, you are close to a clean answer. If you cannot, the error is probably yours to absorb.

The five wrong address situations at a glance

Situation Who made the error Your position
Customer typed the wrong address at checkout Customer Strong, if you can show the entry
Missing unit or apartment number Customer or form design Mixed
Customer asked you to change the address after ordering Shared Strong with a written request, weak without
You changed or mis-keyed the address You Weak
Courier delivered to the wrong place Courier Weak on the dispute, strong on a carrier claim

What is a wrong address chargeback on Shopify?

A wrong address chargeback is a card dispute where the customer says the order did not reach them because it went somewhere they did not intend. Shopify will usually label it "Product not received". The label hides the real argument. The customer is not saying nothing was sent. They are saying it was sent to the wrong place.

That distinction changes what you need to show. In an ordinary not received case, delivery proof carries the weight. In a wrong address case, the weight sits on the address trail: what the customer entered, what you shipped to, and what the courier recorded.

What does Shopify suggest for this reason?

Shopify's chargeback reasons page suggests, for product not received, the fulfilment date and time, billing information, shipping and tracking, and access logs for digital goods. Shopify also auto-uploads a PDF of all fulfilment events. Its chargebacks pages say it includes the order details and the billing and shipping addresses automatically.

The address records are therefore already in the pack. What you add is the story that explains them.

Where does a wrong address chargeback come from? Five causes

1. The customer typed it wrong

A transposed street number, a wrong postcode, a missing suburb. The courier follows the label, the parcel goes to a real address, and the customer says it never came.

Your evidence: the order record showing the address as entered, the label, the delivery scan and address, and any message where the customer confirms the details. If they say "that's my old address", you have your answer in their own words.

2. A missing unit or apartment number

The street address is right and the unit number is missing, so the parcel is left at a building entrance or a shared area. Australia Post's authority to leave page lists apartments that are not accessible for delivery and mail rooms with no one in attendance as unsuitable locations, which shows how common this risk is.

Your evidence: the order address as entered, whether your checkout had a unit field, and the delivery scan. Here the customer and the form share the blame. Be honest in your cover note.

3. The customer asked for an address change after ordering

An address change is the classic trigger. A customer emails on the day after ordering to say they will be at a different address. You change it. Later they forget, or a family member disputes.

Your evidence: the customer's written request, your confirmation reply, the edited order record and the delivery scan at the new address. Without the written request, you have nothing.

4. You changed or mis-keyed it

Someone on your team edited the address, copied it wrongly, or chose the billing address instead of the shipping one. This is an internal error.

Your move: do not fight. Refund or accept, fix the process and the address change record, and consider whether the courier can still recover the parcel. A fast, honest resolution is cheaper than a lost chargeback.

5. The courier delivered to the wrong place

The label was right and the driver left the parcel at the wrong door. Only a carrier enquiry can confirm it.

Your move: lodge an enquiry asking for the delivery location and any photo, tell the customer, and refund or replace. A courier error on a correctly addressed parcel is a claim for you to pursue, not a dispute you can win by evidence.

How do you tell which cause applies?

Put three delivery address records side by side.

Address Where you find it
A. What the customer entered The order record, and the checkout fields in the admin
B. What was on the label The shipping label or fulfilment record
C. Where the courier delivered The tracking page, any delivery photo, the carrier's reply

Then read the pattern.

  • A, B and C match: the courier did what was asked. Either the customer made the error, or the claim is mistaken.
  • A and B match, C differs: a courier error.
  • A and C match, B differs: unlikely, but check how the label was produced.
  • A differs from B and C: an edit or a keying error. Find out who changed it and when.

This one table settles most wrong address cases in ten minutes.

Illustration: the three address check on a A$160 order

Order placed Tuesday 13 October 2026, shipped Wednesday 14 October, delivered Friday 16 October. The customer writes on Monday 19 October to say they never received it. The bank files a dispute on Monday 2 November: A$160 and a A$25 fee are taken. Your Shopify due date falls between Monday 9 November and Monday 23 November, depending on how the window is set.

Address Value
A. Entered 14 Example Street, Parramatta NSW 2150
B. Label 14 Example Street, Parramatta NSW 2150
C. Delivered 14 Example Street, Parramatta NSW 2150, photo shows a front door

All three match. The customer says they live at number 41. They typed 14. You have an address trail that follows their own entry, plus the photo. The delivery is clean and the error is theirs. This is a case worth fighting, though a reviewer may still sympathise with the customer. Offer a goodwill gesture in your messages even as you submit the pack.

These addresses are made up for illustration.

What evidence do you send?

Build the pack around the address trail.

  1. Cover note. One page with the three addresses side by side and a short timeline.
  2. Order record. Shopify supplies this, including the billing and shipping addresses. Add a screenshot of the order's address as entered, with the date.
  3. Checkout form evidence. A screenshot of your checkout showing the address fields, including any unit field and any confirmation step.
  4. Delivery record. The tracking page, the delivered scan, and any photo.
  5. Customer messages. Anything where the customer confirms the address, asks for a change, or acknowledges delivery.
  6. Prior orders. Shopify includes the customer's prior orders. Earlier undisputed deliveries to the same address help.
  7. Shipping policy. Especially any line saying the customer is responsible for entering a correct address.

Use the chargeback evidence checklist for file sizes: PDF, JPEG or PNG, 2 MB each, 4 MB in total, one file per evidence type, no links.

What if the customer's message supports their claim?

Then your pack is weak on the central point. Do not hide it. Decide whether to fight, based on the other evidence and the value, or whether to accept and fix the process. Our guide to accepting or fighting a Shopify dispute shows how to weigh it.

Should you refund, replace or fight?

Situation Stage Best move
Customer typed it wrong, you have the entry and a delivery photo Chargeback Fight
Customer typed it wrong, small order, thin evidence Chargeback Accept, or settle
You mis-keyed or edited without a request Either Refund, accept, fix the process
Courier delivered to the wrong place Either Refund, then claim from the carrier
Any of the above Inquiry A full refund ends it
Customer asked for the change in writing Chargeback Fight with the message

Shopify says a full refund ends an inquiry, a partial refund does not, and an open chargeback cannot be refunded. See chargeback vs inquiry for why the type matters.

Can you recover a parcel sent to the wrong address?

Sometimes. If it was delivered to a real address, someone may have it. A polite note to the neighbours, or a carrier enquiry, can help. If it has been returned to sender, you may be able to reship. We did not find a published carrier process for redirecting a delivered parcel, so ask your courier. If the parcel is genuinely lost, our post on parcels lost in transit shows how the claim works for Australia Post.

Illustration: the cost of a wrong address

Suppose the order was A$160, goods and postage cost A$80, and the dispute is lost.

Item Amount
Revenue taken back A$160
Dispute fee A$25
Goods and postage already spent A$80
Cash lost A$105
Cash lost if refunded early as an inquiry A$80

An early refund saves the fee and the time. Those are assumed figures, and they show why the first reply to the customer matters.

What should you say to the customer?

The first reply

Hi [name], I'm sorry your order hasn't reached you. I've checked and it was sent to [address as entered] and the courier recorded delivery on [date]. Could you confirm the full address you wanted it sent to, including any unit number? If it's different, I'll ask the courier to investigate and we'll put it right.

If the customer gives a different address

Thanks for confirming. The order was placed with [address as entered]. I'll lodge an enquiry with [carrier] to try to recover the parcel and update you by [date]. If we can't recover it, I'll [refund / reship] your order.

If you made the error

Hi [name], I've found the problem: we entered your address incorrectly when preparing the order. That's our mistake and I'm sorry. I'd like to [reship today / refund you in full]. Which would you prefer?

Honesty here protects your relationship, and it often prevents the dispute entirely.

How do you prevent a wrong address chargeback?

At checkout

  • Collect a unit number or apartment field separately from the street line.
  • Ask for a delivery contact number, so the courier can reach the customer.
  • Show an address confirmation step before payment, if your theme or an app supports it. We did not verify specific tools, so check what your store offers.
  • Warn about business and apartment addresses that may be unattended during the day.
  • Make billing and shipping addresses clear, so customers do not mix them up.

After the order

  • Send an order confirmation that repeats the shipping address, with a line such as "If this isn't right, reply within 24 hours."
  • Treat address changes as controlled edits. Require a written request, confirm by reply, and log the change.
  • Check for mismatches between billing and shipping on high-value orders before you ship. Shopify's prevention guidance recommends reviewing suspicious orders before fulfilling.

At fulfilment

  • Copy the address from the order, not from a message or a screenshot.
  • Have a second person check high-value labels.
  • Photograph the label on high-value parcels before they leave.

After delivery

  • Send a delivery notice with the address and a prompt to reply if it is wrong.
  • Save the tracking page and any photo on delivery day.

Shopify's preventing chargebacks page also recommends a recognisable statement descriptor, easy-to-find contact details and fast replies. Each reduces the chance a wrong address becomes a bank dispute.

Illustration: a one-hour fix

An hour spent adding a unit field, an address-confirmation line in the order email, and a rule that address changes need a written request can prevent one lost dispute a month for a store that ships a few hundred orders. One lost dispute on a A$160 order costs A$185 including the fee, so the hour of A$40 work repays itself quickly. These are assumed figures and they will differ for your store.

How should you handle an address change after the order?

An address change is the most common internal cause of a wrong address chargeback, and it is entirely within your control. Treat every address change as a small controlled process, not a quick edit.

A simple address change protocol

  1. Ask for the request in writing, by email or your contact form. A phone call needs a follow-up email.
  2. Check whether the order has shipped. If it has, the address change is a carrier matter, not an edit.
  3. Confirm the full new delivery address back to the customer, including the unit number, suburb, state and postcode.
  4. Wait for a reply that says "yes, that's right" on high-value orders.
  5. Edit the order and note the change with the date and who made it.
  6. Reprint the label and destroy the old one so it cannot be used.
  7. Save the whole thread with the order.

That thread is the evidence that the address change was the customer's choice. If a dispute arrives, it goes straight into the pack.

A message you can adapt

Hi [name], thanks for letting us know. To confirm, we'll send your order to: [full address, including unit number]. Please reply "yes" if that's right, and we'll update the order straight away. Once it's with the courier we can't guarantee a change, so please reply today.

Illustration: the cost of a loose address change

A store handles 12 address change requests a month by phone and edits the order without a written record. Two end up in disputes each quarter. Each lost dispute on a A$140 order costs A$165 with the fee, so A$330 a quarter, plus time. A written-request rule adds about two minutes per change, which is 24 minutes a month, or about A$16 at A$40 an hour. These are assumed figures. The point is that a small habit costs less than one lost dispute.

What about unusual delivery addresses?

Some addresses cause more wrong address chargebacks than others. We could not verify each courier's rules, so treat these as prompts to check, not as statements of policy.

Address type Common problem What to do
Apartment or unit Missing unit number, unattended mail room Collect a unit field, add entry instructions, warn about safe drop
Workplace Customer not there on the day Offer an alternative address or a collection point
PO box Some services cannot deliver to PO boxes Check your courier before accepting the order
Rural or remote Long routes, vague addresses Ask for a landmark or contact number
Holiday or temporary address Customer leaves before delivery Confirm dates of stay
Gift to another person Recipient unknown to you Ask for a recipient phone number

Australia Post's authority to leave page lists apartments not accessible for delivery and unattended mail rooms among unsuitable safe drop locations. That is a useful reminder that an address can be correct and still be a poor place to leave a parcel.

Worked scenarios: three wrong address cases

All figures and dates are assumed.

Scenario 1: the transposed number

A customer orders A$95 of goods and types 41 Wattle Road as 14 Wattle Road. The courier delivers to number 14 with a photo. On Monday 2 November 2026 the customer disputes the order.

Move: fight if you can show the entry and the photo. At A$120 with the fee, a 30 minute pack costing A$20 of time is reasonable. Send a goodwill offer to the customer in your messages, because they made an honest mistake.

Scenario 2: the unit that wasn't asked for

A customer orders A$210 of goods to a building with 40 units. Your checkout has one address line and no unit field. The courier leaves the parcel in the lobby and it disappears.

Move: the form is part of the problem. Refund if it is an inquiry. If it is a chargeback, weigh A$235 against a thin pack and consider accepting. Add a unit field this week.

Scenario 3: the gift and the change

A customer orders A$130 as a gift and emails the next day asking you to send it to their sister's address instead. You do, without a reply to confirm. The sister is away, and the customer disputes the order two weeks later.

Move: you have the written request, so you have a story. Attach the request and your edit record, the delivery scan at the new address, and any photo. Without your confirmation reply the pack is weaker than it could be, so make that reply part of your routine from now on.

How do you audit your address errors each month?

An audit shows whether your checkout and process are working.

  1. List every delivered-but-missing complaint and dispute from the month.
  2. For each, run the three address check: entered, label, delivered.
  3. Tag the cause: customer typed it wrong, missing unit, address change, internal error, courier error.
  4. Count the causes and look for the biggest.
  5. Change one thing that addresses the biggest cause, such as adding a unit field or a confirmation line.
  6. Check again next month.

After a quarter you will know whether address errors come from the form, the process or the courier. That knowledge is worth more than any single dispute win.

How does a wrong address affect your chargeback rate?

Every dispute counts toward your Shopify chargeback rate, whether you win or lose. Shopify's monitoring page says the rate counts all disputes customers open on eligible Shopify Payments transactions, and a high rate can lead to an account health notification, a reserve or NDRP enrolment. In NDRP the fee in Australia is A$25 per auto-resolved dispute, and there is no evidence step.

Wrong address disputes are among the most preventable, which makes them a good place to start if your rate is climbing. See Shopify chargeback rate and account health.

What's different for Australian merchants?

Unit and apartment addresses are common. Many customers live in units, townhouses and shared buildings. A missing unit number is one of the most frequent address errors, so make the unit number a visible field.

Rural and regional addresses. Rural addresses and PO boxes work differently. Check which services deliver to each and what address format the courier needs.

Postcodes and suburbs. The same street name can exist in several suburbs and states. Collect state and postcode as separate fields.

AVS is not a general fix. Shopify's prevention page recommends shipping only orders that pass address verification for US, UK or Canada destinations. That advice is specific to those regions, so do not assume it protects Australian orders.

Long cardholder windows. NAB gives cardholders up to 120 days for Visa and Mastercard disputes, varying by reason, and 210 days for eftpos. CHOICE reports the window can run from the expected delivery date, with an outer limit of 540 days for Visa. A wrong address dispute can arrive months after the delivery, so keep the address trail.

Local dates and money. Use A$ and full dates in cover notes, such as 16 October 2026, so the reviewer cannot misread day and month.

Common mistakes

Editing an address without a written request

You lose your best evidence and gain the blame.

Not comparing the three addresses

It takes ten minutes and tells you who made the error.

Hiding a message that helps the customer

Reviewers read the whole story. A pack that omits a key fact loses credibility.

Fighting a case where you made the error

You will not win, and you will have spent the time.

Forgetting the carrier claim

If the courier misdelivered, you may be able to claim. Australia Post's compensation page says sender claims must be lodged within 6 months of posting, with proof of lodgement.

Not fixing the checkout

If the same error appears twice, the form is the problem.

Missing the due date

Evidence locks after you click Submit now, and Shopify submits for you on the due date. Aim for two business days early. See the chargeback deadline guide.

What we could not verify

  • Which address-validation tools work best for Australian Shopify checkouts. We did not test any.
  • How a card issuer weighs a customer's own address entry against a claim of wrong delivery.
  • A published carrier process for redirecting a parcel already delivered.
  • How weekends and public holidays affect Shopify due dates.

If a decision depends on one of these, ask the carrier or Shopify Support and keep the reply.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wrong address chargeback?

It is a card dispute, usually labelled "Product not received", where the customer says the order went to an address they did not intend. The real question is who made the address error, so your evidence centres on the address the customer entered, the label and the courier's delivery record.

Who is responsible if the customer typed the wrong address?

Generally the customer, and your position is strong if you can show the address as entered, the label, the delivery scan and any confirming message. A reviewer may still sympathise with them, so combine a clear pack with a goodwill offer where the value is small.

Can I win a chargeback when the parcel went to the wrong address?

It depends on who made the error. If the customer entered the address and the courier delivered there, you have a reasonable case. If you edited it or the courier misdelivered, your position is weak. The card issuer decides, so nothing is guaranteed.

What if the courier delivered to the wrong house?

Lodge a carrier enquiry for the delivery location and any photo, tell the customer, and refund or replace. You cannot win that dispute on evidence, but you may have a claim against the carrier. Australia Post's page says sender claims must be lodged within 6 months of posting.

Should I change an address after the customer orders?

Only with a written request from the customer, confirmed by reply and logged on the order. That message protects you if the new delivery address is later disputed. Without it, you carry the risk of the change, and a wrong address chargeback becomes very hard to defend.

How do I stop wrong address disputes?

Add a unit field, repeat the shipping address in the order confirmation, require written requests for changes, check high-value labels, and send delivery notices. Shopify's prevention guidance also recommends tracking, clear policies, a recognisable descriptor and quick replies to customers.

Can I refund a wrong address dispute?

If it is an inquiry, a full refund ends it. If it is an open chargeback, Shopify says it cannot be refunded, so you respond with evidence or accept. A partial refund does not end an inquiry, so refund in full or respond.

What evidence shows the address was correct?

The order record with the address as entered, a screenshot of your checkout form, the label, the tracking page with the delivered address, any photo, and messages where the customer confirms the details. Shopify adds the billing and shipping addresses and the fulfilment events.

Does a wrong address dispute affect my account?

Yes. Every dispute counts toward your Shopify chargeback rate, whether you win or lose. A high rate can lead to an account health notice, a reserve or NDRP enrolment. Preventing address errors is one of the cheapest ways to protect your rate.
