Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks in Australia: how to plan for the disputes after the sale

ChargeFix guide cover with a shield icon: Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks in Australia

The sale ends on Monday. The disputes can arrive for months afterwards. Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks are a delayed bill for a busy week. Here is how to plan for them before the first order.

Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks arrive after the sale, because cardholders have 120 days for Visa and Mastercard and 210 for eftpos, according to NAB. Plan for volume, delivery promises and refund rules before the sale, keep dated screenshots of your sale terms, and hold back cash for disputes, since Shopify names volume surges as a reserve trigger.

This guide to Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks is for you if:

  • You run sales in November and want to know what disputes to expect and when.
  • You have had a reserve, a payout delay or a spike in refunds after a busy week.
  • You want a simple plan for the weeks before, during and after the sale.

The 30-second answer (TL;DR)

  • In 2026, Click Frenzy is on 12 November, Black Friday on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November, according to Australia Post's ecommerce calendar.
  • NAB's guide gives cardholders 120 days for Visa and Mastercard (varying by reason code) and 210 days for eftpos. A sale order can therefore be disputed into the second half of 2027.
  • Shopify's reserves page lists volume surges, an increased refund rate and elevated chargeback activity among the reasons for a reserve. It gives no Australian figure or formula.
  • Shopify's monitoring page says the dispute rate counts every dispute a customer opens, that winning does not remove one, and that a high rate can lead to a notification, a reserve and monitoring.
  • The ACCC says a "no refunds" sign cannot deny consumer rights, and that change of mind gives no right unless your policy offers one. Sale prices do not change this.
  • Your best protection is a written sale policy shown at checkout, honest delivery estimates, and a cash buffer that outlasts the dispute windows.

Quick note: Shopify's pages do not forecast sale-period dispute volumes, and we found no Australian statistic on them, so this guide uses assumed figures for its examples. The A$25 dispute fee used in them is a third-party figure that is also NAB's own merchant fee, so confirm Shopify's fee with Shopify Support. We have left Christmas delivery cut-off dates to our separate Christmas guide.

Why do Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks matter?

Because a sale concentrates a quarter of orders into days, and every one of those orders carries the same dispute window. A sale also changes what customers expect: faster delivery, easy returns and clear pricing. When the experience does not match, some customers go to their bank. Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks are the bill that arrives later.

We found no Shopify or Australian source that measures dispute rates in sale periods, so we do not quote one. What we can say, from Shopify's pages, is that volume surges and increased refund rates are named reserve factors, and that disputes count toward your rate whether you win or lose. From NAB's guide, we know how long the windows are. Together, they tell you to plan for time, cash and records.

What are the 2026 dates to plan around?

Australia Post's ecommerce calendar lists Click Frenzy on Thursday 12 November 2026, Black Friday on Friday 27 November, Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November, Christmas Day on Friday 25 December and Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December. Payouts are not made on weekends or public holidays, according to Shopify's payout timing page, so a Friday sale pays out later than a Tuesday one.

Date in 2026 Event What it means for you
Thu 12 Nov Click Frenzy First volume surge; check stock and delivery promises
Fri 27 Nov Black Friday Peak orders; payouts wait for the next business days
Mon 30 Nov Cyber Monday Last sale day; watch fulfilment backlog
Fri 25 Dec Christmas Day No payouts; see our Christmas guide for delivery cut-offs
Sat 26 Dec Boxing Day No payouts on weekends

How soon do the disputes arrive?

It varies, and Shopify publishes no timing curve. A customer can dispute as soon as a charge appears. The longer tail comes from the windows: 120 days for Visa and Mastercard, varying by reason code, and 210 days for eftpos. For an order placed on Friday 27 November 2026, 120 days runs to about late March 2027, and 210 days to about late June 2027, if the count runs from the order date. The start point varies by scheme and reason code, so treat those as the order of magnitude. Our guide to chargeback time limits in Australia explains the clocks.

What does a sale do to your money?

It raises takings quickly and delays the matching cash and the matching disputes. Payouts follow the Australian minimum of 2 business days, with the bank adding 1 to 3, and disputes take the amount and a fee at once when they open. So the cash flow is a rush in, a pause, then a slow stream of deductions.

Illustration: a sale weekend. From Friday 27 November to Monday 30 November 2026, a store takes A$38,750.00 across 310 orders. At the standard online card rate of 1.7% plus 30 cents for the Basic plan, processing is A$751.75 (1.7% of A$38,750.00 is A$658.75, and 310 orders at 30 cents is A$93.00). Net takings are A$37,998.25. Later, 4 orders averaging A$125.00 are disputed, and each loses the amount plus the reported A$25.00 fee, so A$150.00 each and A$600.00 in total. Check the rate for your own plan on Shopify's Australian pricing page.

Line Amount
Sales, 27 to 30 November A$38,750.00
Processing fees minus A$751.75
Net takings A$37,998.25
4 disputes at A$125.00 minus A$500.00
4 dispute fees (reported, unconfirmed) minus A$100.00
Position after the disputes A$37,398.25

The sum is A$38,750.00 less A$751.75, which is A$37,998.25, less A$500.00 gives A$37,498.25, less A$100.00 gives A$37,398.25. Four disputes from 310 orders is about 1.3% (4 divided by 310 is 0.0129). Shopify gives no threshold, so this is a tracking number, not a pass mark. If you win any of them, the amount and fee should return per Shopify's resolve page, but winning does not remove the dispute from your rate.

Could a reserve follow a sale?

It could. Shopify's reserves page lists volume surges, an increased refund rate and elevated chargeback activity among the reasons, and says the amount and period are set by the reserve email. Its examples are a fixed US$1,000 for 120 days or 10% for 120 days. It gives no Australian figure. If a 10% reserve did apply to the net takings above, A$3,799.83 would be held (10% of A$37,998.25), and if it started on Monday 7 December 2026 it would run to about Tuesday 6 April 2027. That is an illustration of the arithmetic using Shopify's own example, not a forecast. See Shopify Payments reserve in Australia.

How do payouts and holds behave in a sale week?

Shopify's payout timing page says the Australian minimum is 2 business days, with no payouts on weekends or public holidays, and the bank adds 1 to 3 business days. Higher-risk accounts wait 5 to 20 business days, and a bank account change pauses payouts for 3 to 5 business days. So do not change bank details in the weeks before a sale. Our guide to a Shopify payout held because of a chargeback shows how to read the detail, and negative balance after a chargeback covers a payout that goes below zero.

What do sale terms and refund rules need to say?

They need to be clear, shown at checkout and consistent with consumer law. The ACCC says a major problem means a full refund to the original payment form, and for a minor problem the seller chooses repair, replace or refund. Change of mind gives no right unless your policy offers one. A "no refunds" sign cannot deny these rights.

Rule What it means in a sale
Major problem: full refund to the original payment form Sale items are covered too
Minor problem: seller chooses repair, replace or refund Offer a solution quickly
Change of mind: no right unless your policy offers one Say clearly whether you offer it in the sale
"No refunds" cannot deny consumer rights Do not rely on a sign
Return costs reimbursed if the problem is confirmed Plan for them in the sale price

Our posts on writing a refund policy for a Shopify store, change of mind refunds, no refunds signs and major vs minor failures give the wording. The simplest sale rule is to take a dated screenshot of the terms shown at checkout on the first day of the sale, because that screenshot is evidence if a customer later disputes.

What if your sale changes the return window?

State the dates in plain words on the product page, at checkout and in the confirmation email, and keep the screenshots. If you extend the window for the season, say so with the end date. The ACCC says change of mind gives no right unless your policy offers one, so a generous policy is your choice, but whatever you promise you must honour.

How do delivery promises cause Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks?

When the promise is shorter than the reality, customers wait, worry and then ask their bank. The ACCC says a business that cannot supply on time or within a reasonable time must offer a solution, and must not take payment if it knows it cannot deliver in time. In a sale, with more parcels and more carriers' work, the gap between promise and reality widens.

The ACCC also says businesses should give clear, accurate information about stock and delivery timing, and update customers on delays. It gives no number of days, so your own delivery estimate is the promise. Set it for the sale, not for a normal week. Our guides to item not received disputes and Australia Post, parcel lost in transit and pre-order and backorder refunds cover the detail, and the last is the closest match if you sell stock you do not yet hold.

Sale problem Likely Shopify reason What helps
Parcel late or stuck Product not received Honest estimate, tracking, delay message, refund offer
Item out of stock after payment Product not received or credit not processed Check stock; refund quickly
Item differs from the sale listing Product unacceptable Accurate photos and text
Unfamiliar sale brand on the statement Unrecognized Clear store name and order email
Refund promised but not seen Credit not processed Dated refund confirmation
Someone else used the card Fraudulent Review routine for flagged orders

What should you tell customers when the sale backs up?

Tell them early and give a way out. A short email on the day you know about a delay costs less than a dispute fee. Offer a choice between waiting and a refund to the original payment method.

How do you prepare your store before the sale?

Write the terms, check the promises, save the proof and fill the cash buffer. Doing it two weeks before Click Frenzy on 12 November 2026 leaves time to fix anything you find. The list below is built from Shopify's evidence guidance and the ACCC's rules.

PRE-SALE CHECKLIST (START BY MON 26 OCT 2026 FOR CLICK FRENZY ON 12 NOV)
[ ] Sale terms, returns and refund policy written and shown at checkout
[ ] Dated screenshots of the policy, the product pages and checkout saved
[ ] Delivery estimate set for sale volume, not a normal week
[ ] Stock levels checked; items you cannot supply on time removed or marked
[ ] Carrier cut-off dates and proof of delivery options confirmed
[ ] Order confirmation email names your store and gives tracking when available
[ ] Fraud review routine and order value threshold agreed
[ ] Bank details and legal names checked; no changes planned during the sale
[ ] Cash buffer sized for disputes and refunds for the next quarter
[ ] Support inbox covered, with a reply target of one business day
[ ] Evidence folder created for sale orders

How big should your Black Friday chargeback buffer be?

Size it to your largest realistic dispute month, plus your refunds. Disputes take the amount and the fee at once, and any win can take until 75 days after you submit. A reserve, if one applies, holds cash for the period in the reserve email. Plan so that a month of refunds and disputes plus a missed payout does not stop you paying suppliers. Our guide to chargeback fees in Australia covers what is confirmed and what is not.

Illustration: a buffer for the sale quarter. Using the sale weekend above, suppose you expect up to 8 disputes averaging A$125.00 and 20 refunds averaging A$60.00. Disputes cost 8 times A$150.00, which is A$1,200.00 including the reported fee. Refunds cost 20 times A$60.00, which is A$1,200.00. That is A$2,400.00 in total. Add a 10% reserve held back on net takings, A$3,799.83, and you could be A$6,199.83 short of the cash you thought you had (A$2,400.00 plus A$3,799.83). The numbers are assumptions, but the habit of adding them is sound.

Should you pause advertising if payouts are delayed?

That is a business call. If checkout still works but payouts are paused, each new sale adds cash you cannot reach and a possible dispute you still carry. See Shopify Payments account disabled or terminated for what holds do and do not stop.

What happens after the sale?

Review, reconcile and keep records. Export orders, refunds and disputes for the sale weeks, check the payout lines, and keep delivery proof for every order. Respond to each dispute before its due date. Shopify submits on the due date even with no evidence, and evidence cannot be edited after "Submit now".

Illustration: a sale-order dispute with dates. A customer orders on Friday 27 November 2026. Because of the backlog, the order ships on Monday 7 December. On Monday 11 January 2027 the customer opens a dispute for product not received. Assuming a 21-day window, evidence is due Monday 1 February 2027. You submit on Friday 22 January, and the latest bank decision is 75 days later, on Wednesday 7 April 2027.

Date Event Notes
Fri 27 Nov 2026 Black Friday order placed Policy screenshot from the first day of the sale
Mon 7 Dec 2026 Order shipped Tracking saved
Mon 11 Jan 2027 Dispute opened, product not received Amount and fee taken at once
Fri 22 Jan 2027 Evidence submitted Cannot be edited after "Submit now"
Mon 1 Feb 2027 Due date, assuming 21 days Shopify submits on the due date even with no evidence
Wed 7 Apr 2027 Latest bank decision No appeal; a win can be re-disputed

The 75 days run from Friday 22 January to Wednesday 7 April 2027. We could not confirm how weekends and public holidays affect due dates, so submit early. Our guides to responding to a Shopify Payments dispute, the Shopify chargeback deadline and accepting or fighting a dispute cover the response.

What evidence should you keep against Click Frenzy disputes?

The same as for any order, saved with extra care because volume is higher: order and fulfilment records, tracking and proof of delivery, customer messages, the policy as shown at checkout and any delay notices. Shopify auto-includes order details, addresses, IP, fulfilment and tracking, refunds, and prior orders and disputes. You add messages, policies and delivery photos. The format rules are PDF, JPEG or PNG, 2 MB per file and 4 MB in total, one file per evidence type, with no links. Our guide to evidence to save at fulfilment lists it.

How do you watch your dispute rate after Black Friday chargebacks?

Check it monthly in Settings, Payments or Analytics, Reports. Shopify gives no numeric thresholds, so compare month with month in your own store. Our guide to chargeback rate and account health warnings explains what Shopify says.

How should you track Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks after the sale?

Open a simple sheet the week the sale ends and add every Black Friday dispute and Click Frenzy dispute as it arrives. The point is to see the shape of your own tail: how many arrive, when, for which reason and at what cost. Shopify gives no sale-period benchmark, so your sheet becomes the benchmark for next year.

Column What to record Why it helps
Order date Click Frenzy, Black Friday, Cyber Monday or other Shows which sale day drives disputes
Dispute opened Date Shows how long after the sale it arrives
Reason One of Shopify's eight reasons Points to the fix: delivery, listing, refund or fraud
Amount and fee A$ taken at once Feeds the cash buffer
Outcome Won, lost or accepted, and the date Shows what your evidence achieved
Cause Your note: late parcel, stock, policy, unknown Shows what to change before next year

Illustration: reading the tail. After the 2026 sales, your sheet shows 9 disputes: 5 for product not received, 2 for unrecognized, 1 for credit not processed and 1 for fraudulent. The average order was A$125.00, so the 9 disputes took A$1,125.00 plus the reported A$25.00 fee each, A$225.00, a total of A$1,350.00. Five of nine, or about 56%, were delivery related, which tells you to change the delivery promise before the next sale. The count is an example, not a norm.

Are Black Friday disputes different from ordinary disputes?

The process is the same. The response window is usually 7 to 21 days, the amount and fee are taken at once, the bank decides up to 75 days after you submit, and there is no appeal. What differs is the volume, the clustering of dates and the pressure on your team. A Black Friday dispute arriving in January competes with new-year orders and staff leave, so diarise due dates the day each dispute lands.

What should you do when several Click Frenzy disputes land together?

Sort by due date, not by amount. Shopify submits on the due date even with no evidence, so the earliest due date is the most urgent. Then sort by strength of evidence: respond first to the ones where your proof is clear, and decide quickly on the weak ones whether to accept. Accepting means the amount goes to the customer and the fee is not returned, so it is a cost, not a free exit.

Can Black Friday chargebacks affect your Shopify account?

They count toward your dispute rate like any others. Shopify's monitoring page says winning does not remove a dispute, and that a high rate can lead to a notification, a reserve and enrolment in a monitoring program. It gives no numeric thresholds. If your sheet shows a sharp rise, act early on the causes. See Shopify Payments account disabled or terminated for what happens if things escalate.

What about buy now, pay later and fraud in a sale?

Sales bring first-time customers, payment plans and more flagged orders, each with its own dispute path. Buy now, pay later providers and PayPal run their own dispute processes, and the details differ from card disputes. See Afterpay and Zip disputes on Shopify and PayPal disputes on a Shopify store. For card fraud, Shopify's fraud analysis rates orders low, medium or high risk, but it does not cover bank charge reversals. Our guide to fraud prevention on Shopify sets out a review routine you can run in busy weeks.

What's different for Australian merchants?

Your sale dates, payout calendar and consumer law are local. Click Frenzy is an Australian sale event. Payouts skip weekends and public holidays. Consumer law applies to sale items. And the dispute fee in A$ is unconfirmed.

  • Sale dates. Click Frenzy is on 12 November, Black Friday on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November 2026.
  • Payouts. The Australian minimum is 2 business days, with no payouts on weekends or public holidays, and the bank adds 1 to 3 business days.
  • Cardholder windows. NAB gives 120 days for Visa and Mastercard (varying by reason code) and 210 days for eftpos, and eftpos is Australia's local debit scheme, co-badged with Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay. See debit vs credit card chargebacks.
  • Fees. The pricing page lists card rates, with no dispute fee. The Australian terms allow a separate investigation fee on notice, with no amount.
  • Christmas. Delivery cut-offs matter next. See Christmas delivery cut-offs and disputes.

What are the most common mistakes with Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks?

Treating the sale as finished on Monday is the first. The second is promising normal delivery times in a busy week, and the third is spending the takings before the windows close. Each is avoidable with a plan made a few weeks earlier.

  1. Forgetting the long windows. Cardholders have 120 or 210 days.
  2. Promising normal delivery times. The ACCC says to give accurate information and update customers.
  3. Selling stock you cannot supply on time. The ACCC says not to take payment in that case.
  4. Relying on "no refunds". The ACCC says it cannot deny consumer rights.
  5. Not saving the sale terms. A dated screenshot is evidence.
  6. Spending the takings. Disputes and any reserve can take cash back.
  7. Changing bank details before a sale. Payouts pause for 3 to 5 business days.
  8. Ignoring disputes in January. Shopify submits on the due date even with no evidence.

Frequently asked questions

When are Click Frenzy and Black Friday in 2026?

Australia Post's ecommerce calendar lists Click Frenzy on Thursday 12 November 2026, Black Friday on Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December and Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December. Check the calendar again before you publish your own sale dates.

How long after Black Friday can a Black Friday dispute arrive?

NAB's guide gives cardholders 120 days for Visa and Mastercard, varying by reason code, and 210 days for eftpos. For an order on 27 November 2026, that is about late March 2027 and about late June 2027, if the count runs from the order date. The start point varies by scheme.

Do sales cause more Black Friday chargebacks?

We found no Shopify or Australian figure on that, so we cannot say. What we can say is that Shopify names volume surges, an increased refund rate and elevated chargeback activity as reserve factors, and that every dispute counts toward your rate. Track your own numbers before and after each sale.

Can Shopify hold my money after a sale?

Shopify's reserves page says a reserve is a temporary hold on part or all of your transactions, and lists volume surges among the triggers. It gives examples of a fixed US$1,000 or 10% for 120 days, and no Australian figure. Your reserve email states your own terms, and appeals go by replying to it.

Can I refuse refunds on sale items?

Not where consumer law applies. The ACCC says a major problem means a full refund to the original payment form, a minor problem lets the seller choose repair, replace or refund, and a "no refunds" sign cannot deny these rights. Change of mind gives no right unless your policy offers one.

What should I screenshot before Click Frenzy and Black Friday chargebacks start?

The sale terms, returns and refund policy as shown at checkout, the product pages with their delivery estimates, and the order confirmation email, each with the date. Shopify accepts PDF, JPEG or PNG, up to 2 MB per file and 4 MB in total, and does not accept links.

What if late delivery is driving Black Friday disputes?

Tell the customer early, give a new date and offer a refund to the original payment method. The ACCC says businesses must offer a solution if they cannot supply on time or within a reasonable time, and should update customers on delays. A message sent before the customer asks costs less than a dispute fee.

How much cash should I hold back for Black Friday chargebacks?

Enough to cover your realistic disputes and refunds for the dispute windows, plus any reserve. In our example, 8 disputes and 20 refunds cost A$2,400.00, and a 10% reserve on A$37,998.25 would hold A$3,799.83. Those are assumptions, so size yours from your own history.

Will winning a Click Frenzy dispute protect my account?

A win returns the amount and fee per Shopify's resolve page, but it does not remove the dispute from your rate, according to the monitoring page. A high rate can lead to a notification, a reserve and monitoring. The best protection is fewer disputes, through honest promises and fast replies.
