You type "cheapest chargeback app" into a search box because you are tired of paying for things that do not pay you back. Fair. A dispute already costs you the order, the goods and a $15 fee. The last thing you want is a tool that takes another slice of what you manage to save.
Here is the honest answer. The cheapest chargeback app for Shopify depends on how many disputes you get and how big your orders are. At one or two disputes a month, several apps cost nothing. At eight a month, a flat plan around $19 beats every percentage fee we found. At twenty a month with larger orders, the gap between a flat plan and a 25% success fee is hundreds of dollars a month. Below, we show the arithmetic for each case, the hidden costs that make a cheap tool expensive and the one moment when the cheapest sticker price is the wrong choice.
This guide is for you if:
- You run a Shopify store on Shopify Payments and you want to spend as little as possible on chargeback tools.
- You have seen a dozen pricing pages and none of them are comparable.
- You want a number for your own store, not a vague "it depends".
Last updated: 30 October 2026. Written by the ChargeFix team. Reviewed against sources on 30 October 2026.
We make ChargeFix, so we have a stake, and we say where our own plans are not the cheapest. Prices come from vendor pages and Shopify App Store listings read on 30 October 2026. They change, so check the live page before you buy.
The 30-second answer (TL;DR)
- At 0 to 2 disputes a month, free plans cost $0: ChargeFix (2 filings), Chargeback Copilot (3 evidence PDFs) and DisputeDesk (5 packs) all list one.
- At about 8 disputes a month, a flat plan of roughly $9 to $29 costs less than any percentage fee we found.
- At 20 disputes a month, a 25% success fee on $1,200 recovered is $300. A flat plan is $19 to $39.
- Percentage fees only win at very low volume, or where a cap bites on large orders.
- Free is not always free: some free plans give you drafts you must send yourself.
- Cheap does not help if the tool cannot read your payments or files weak evidence.
- Count your time too. Redo estimates 20 to 45 minutes to assemble one dispute by hand.
Quick note: A chargeback app that recovers money does not lower your dispute ratio. The dispute counts when it is filed. If you need to reduce the ratio, you need prevention or deflection, which cost more and are a different product.
Cheapest option by volume
| Disputes a month | Cheapest kind of option | Typical monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 | A free plan or Shopify's own form | $0 |
| 3 to 5 | A free plan with a higher allowance, or a low flat plan | $0 to $19 |
| 6 to 15 | A flat plan | $9 to $39 |
| 16+ | A flat plan with a high allowance | $19 to $99 |
| Any volume with $1,000+ orders | A capped success fee or a flat plan | Depends on the cap |
What does "cheapest" actually mean for a chargeback app?
There are three ways to measure it, and they point in different directions.
Monthly price. The number on the pricing page. Easy to compare, easy to game. A $0 plan with a 25% fee is not cheaper than a $19 plan with no fee once you recover enough.
Cost per recovered dollar. What you pay divided by what you win back. This is the fair comparison. A tool that costs $19 and recovers $300 costs about 6 cents per dollar recovered. A tool that takes 25% of $300 costs 25 cents per dollar.
Total cost of a dispute. The fee, the time and the lost sales if you do it badly. The cheapest tool is the one that gets a good response out the door at the lowest all-in cost, not the one with the smallest number on the front page.
Throughout this guide we use the second measure for comparisons and flag the third where it matters.
What are the pricing models you will meet?
Almost every chargeback app falls into one of four buckets. Knowing the bucket tells you who it is cheap for.
1. Free plan, limited use. You get a few filings or evidence packs for nothing. Cheap at low volume. You pay when you grow.
2. Flat monthly plan. A fixed price for an allowance of filings or packs. Cheap at medium and high volume. You pay the same in a good month and a bad one.
3. Success fee. A percentage of what the tool recovers, sometimes capped per case. Cheap when you recover very little. Expensive when you recover a lot.
4. Per-alert or per-scan fees. These belong to prevention and deflection, not to fighting disputes. They are charged per alert or per scanned order. A different product and a different bill.
Many tools combine two of these. For example, Chargeback Dispute Specialist lists $4.99 plus 15% on its entry plan. Do The Proof lists a $0 monthly plan with either $19 per won dispute or 15% of the revenue won. Those are hybrids, and their cost depends on your mix of case sizes.
What do the main chargeback apps cost?
Here are the prices we read on 30 October 2026, grouped by model. We list only what the vendor shows. Where an app does not list its allowances, we say so rather than guess.
Free plans
| App | Free plan | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ChargeFix | 2 filings a month | Shopify Payments only |
| DisputeDesk | 5 evidence packs | No success fee |
| Chargeback Copilot | 3 evidence PDFs a month | Launched May 2026 |
| Do The Proof | Drafts only, no fee on any outcome | You send the response yourself |
| Counterproof | A free plan is listed | Limits not shown |
| Chargeback Buddy | A free plan is listed | Inclusions not shown |
| Chargeflow Insights | Free forever | Analytics only, not dispute filing |
Flat monthly plans
| App | Plans | Allowance shown |
|---|---|---|
| Chargeback Buddy | $9, $25, $49 | Not listed |
| ChargeFix | $19, $49, $99 | 25, 100, unlimited filings |
| Chargeback Copilot | $19, $39, $99 | 15, 25, 200 PDFs |
| ChargePay | $19.99 to $99.99 | Tied to your Shopify plan |
| DisputeDesk | $29, $129, $299 | 20, 100, 400 packs |
| Counterproof | $29, $59, $99 | Not listed |
Success-fee models
| App | Fee | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| Paidback | 15% of recovered | $250 per dispute |
| ChargebackWiz | 18% of recovered | None stated |
| Disputifier | 20% of recovered, per Redo | $250 per won case, per Redo |
| Chargeflow Automation | 25% of recovered, excluding the dispute fee | None stated |
| Chargeback Dispute Specialist | $4.99 plus 15%, $14.99 plus 13%, $29.99 plus 10% | $499 flat top plan |
| Do The Proof Growth | $19 per won dispute or 15% of revenue won | Not stated |
Most of the newer flat-plan apps listed have no reviews yet. That includes ours. Chargeflow has 433 reviews, Disputifier has 134 and ChargePay has 27, so the established tools carry more proof of how they behave over time. Cheap is only a good deal if the tool works.
Illustration: what each option costs at 3, 8 and 20 disputes a month
The figures below are assumptions for illustration. We assume half of disputes are won, and we apply percentages to the amount recovered. We ignore the $15 Shopify fee that comes back with a win, because it comes back whichever tool you use. Where an app does not list its allowances, we leave it out of the volume it cannot be checked against.
Store 1: 3 disputes a month, average order $80
You win half on average. Recovered: about $120 a month.
| Option | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| ChargeFix Free (2 filings) | $0, then $19 if you pass 2 |
| Chargeback Copilot Free (3 PDFs) | $0 |
| DisputeDesk Free (5 packs) | $0 |
| Paidback 15% | $18.00 |
| Chargeback Dispute Specialist $4.99 plus 15% | $22.99 |
| ChargebackWiz 18% | $21.60 |
| Disputifier 20% | $24.00 |
| Chargeflow Automation 25% | $30.00 |
Cheapest: a free plan. Over a year, the 25% fee costs $360 and the free plans cost nothing. Note the catch: a free plan does not do anything about the disputes you lose. It simply stops you paying for the privilege of using a tool.
Store 2: 8 disputes a month, average order $75
You win four. Recovered: $300 a month.
| Option | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Paidback 15% | $45.00 |
| Chargeback Dispute Specialist $4.99 plus 15% | $49.99 |
| ChargebackWiz 18% | $54.00 |
| Disputifier 20% | $60.00 |
| Chargeflow Automation 25% | $75.00 |
| ChargeFix Starter | $19.00 |
| Chargeback Copilot Starter (15 PDFs) | $19.00 |
| ChargePay | $19.99 and up |
| DisputeDesk Starter (20 packs) | $29.00 |
Cheapest: a flat plan at $19. Against the 25% fee it saves $56 a month, or $672 a year. Against the 15% fee it saves $26 a month, or $312 a year. Chargeback Buddy lists a $9 plan, but its page does not say what is included, so we cannot confirm it covers 8 disputes.
Store 3: 20 disputes a month, average order $120
You win ten. Recovered: $1,200 a month.
| Option | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Paidback 15% | $180.00 |
| Chargeback Dispute Specialist $4.99 plus 15% | $184.99 |
| ChargebackWiz 18% | $216.00 |
| Disputifier 20% | $240.00 |
| Chargeflow Automation 25% | $300.00 |
| ChargeFix Starter (25 filings) | $19.00 |
| DisputeDesk Starter (20 packs) | $29.00 |
| Chargeback Copilot Pro (25 PDFs) | $39.00 |
Cheapest: the $19 flat plan, by a wide margin. Over a year, the gap to a 25% fee is $281 a month times 12, or $3,372.
The shape is the same every time. Percentage fees feel fine when you recover little and get steeper as you grow. Flat plans feel expensive when you are small and become a bargain as you scale.
When does a capped success fee beat a flat plan?
On large orders, caps change the picture. Paidback and Disputifier both list a $250 cap per won case, according to the listings and Redo's comparison.
Take a store that sells $2,000 items and wins five disputes in a month, recovering $10,000.
| Option | Fee on $2,000 won case | Fee on $10,000 recovered |
|---|---|---|
| Chargeflow Automation 25% | $500 | $2,500 |
| Disputifier 20% with $250 cap | $250 | $1,250 |
| Paidback 15% with $250 cap | $250 | $1,250 |
| ChargebackWiz 18%, no cap listed | $360 | $1,800 |
| A $99 flat plan | not per case | $99 |
Redo's own worked example shows the same logic: a capped 20% can cost less than an uncapped 25% once cases are large. By our arithmetic, Disputifier's capped fee equals Chargeflow's uncapped 25% at about $1,000 per won case. Below that, 25% is cheaper than the capped 20%. Above it, the capped 20% is cheaper. That crossover is our calculation from the published numbers, not a vendor claim.
Even so, a flat plan beats a capped fee at this volume. The cap only makes a percentage fee less bad.
What hidden costs make a cheap chargeback app expensive?
The sticker price is the start. Check each of these before you pick on price.
1. Your time. Redo estimates 20 to 45 minutes to assemble a not-received packet by hand. If a "free" tool leaves you doing most of that, your cost per dispute is mostly time. At $30 an hour, 35 minutes is $17.50 per dispute. Ten disputes is $175 of your time.
2. Drafts you must send. Do The Proof's free plan lists drafts only: "Sending it is on you." That is fine, and it is still manual work you pay for with time.
3. Allowance overages. Know what happens at the cap. Does the tool stop, upgrade you or charge per extra pack? DisputeDesk lists top-ups, for example.
4. Alert and scan fees. If you add prevention, such as Chargeflow Prevent at $0.10 per scan after 1,000 free, or alerts at $29 per deflected chargeback, those are separate costs. A tool that is cheap at representment can still be expensive once you add its prevention layer.
5. Annual plans. Yearly pricing can be cheaper per month. It locks you in. Be sure first.
6. The dispute fee itself. The $15 Shopify fee comes out of your balance no matter which tool you use. A win returns it. A tool that loses more cases costs you more.
7. Data and permissions. Free tools still read your orders and customer data. Read what they access and store. Look for a published data processing agreement.
8. Weak cases filed anyway. If a cheap tool files everything, you lose more cases and still pay. A good tool tells you when not to fight.
Is a free chargeback app really free?
Sometimes. Read the terms.
A fully free plan with no success fee and no cap on time, like the free tiers at ChargeFix, DisputeDesk and Chargeback Copilot, costs nothing until you pass its allowance. Past that, you either upgrade or stop.
Some "free" listings charge on wins. Do The Proof's free plan has no fee but only drafts. Its Growth plan lists $0 a month plus usage charges, with $19 per won dispute or 15% of won revenue. That is cheap on a $40 win and pricey on a $500 one.
Chargeflow's Insights tier is free forever, but it is analytics, not dispute filing. It is not a free way to fight chargebacks.

What does the cheapest chargeback app for Shopify setup look like in practice?
The lowest-cost setup is rarely one tool. It is a short stack that you assemble in an afternoon.
Layer 1: free prevention. A billing descriptor that matches your storefront name, tracking emails on every order, honest delivery estimates and a visible return policy. These cost nothing and stop disputes before they exist. Shopify Protect may also cover some Fraudulent and Unrecognized disputes on eligible US orders. Our guide to what Shopify Protect does not cover lists the gaps.
Layer 2: Shopify's own response form. It is free and it works. For one or two disputes a month it may be all you need. Our guide on the cost of fighting chargebacks manually walks through the time it takes.
Layer 3: a free plan as a safety net. Install one free-plan app and run your next real dispute through it in Manual mode. You learn what it drafts, what it flags as missing and whether it saves you time.
Layer 4: a flat plan when you outgrow the free one. Move up only when you hit the allowance or the hours add up.
Skip until you need them: alerts, prevention scans and guarantees. They solve a different problem and charge differently.
How should you test a cheap chargeback app before you commit?
A low price is only a bargain if the tool does its job. Run this test on a free plan or trial.
- Install in a quiet week. Do not test during a deadline.
- Use a real dispute. Demo data teaches you little.
- Stay in Manual mode. Read every line of the draft.
- Check the facts. Order number, amount, address, tracking, dates.
- Check the match. Does the draft answer the reason the bank gave?
- Time yourself. Note the minutes from opening the dispute to submitting.
- Check what it says about weak cases. A tool that never says "this one is not worth fighting" is selling volume, not value.
- Read the data terms. Look for a published data processing agreement. ChargeFix publishes its terms at /dpa.
If it passes, keep it. If it does not, uninstall and try the next one. That costs you an hour, and it is the cheapest way to avoid paying for the wrong tool for a year.
Illustration: the cost of the first year on three paths
One last assumption-based comparison. A store sees 6 disputes a month, an average order of $80, and wins half. Recovered: $240 a month, or $2,880 a year. The year includes 72 disputes at 35 minutes of hand work each when no tool is used, and we value time at $25 an hour.
| Path | Tool cost for the year | Time cost | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify form only | $0 | 72 × 35 min = 42 hours, $1,050 | $1,050 |
| 25% success fee tool, time cut to 15 minutes | $720 | 18 hours, $450 | $1,170 |
| 15% success fee tool, time cut to 15 minutes | $432 | 18 hours, $450 | $882 |
| $19 flat plan, time cut to 15 minutes | $228 | 18 hours, $450 | $678 |
Assumptions: the tool does not change your win rate, which is fair for a first estimate and is not a promise. The point is the ranking. The flat plan is cheapest, the 25% fee is dearer than doing nothing and the 15% fee sits between. A tool earns its price only when its fee is less than the time it saves.
If the tool also lifts your win rate by even one case a month, the flat plan pulls further ahead. We would not count on that. We would count on the time.
Does the cheapest option change as you grow?
Yes, and you should plan for it.
Under 3 disputes a month: free plans. Revisit every quarter.
3 to 10 disputes a month: a flat plan around $19 to $29. This is where most small stores land. Our guide for small Shopify stores goes deeper.
10 to 30 disputes a month: a flat plan with a high allowance, or a mid tier. Watch your win rate and your time.
30+ disputes a month, or large tickets: compare capped fees, human review and prevention. At this scale, a $99 plan can be the least of your costs. Look at your ratio against the thresholds on Shopify's monitoring page, and run it through our Visa VAMP calculator.
Check your plan each quarter. Stores often stay on a plan they have outgrown or paid for months they did not need.
When is the cheapest chargeback app the wrong choice?
Four cases, and the first is the one people miss.
You need to lower your dispute ratio. Fighting disputes does not reduce the count. If your Visa ratio is near the 1.5% line that Shopify's monitoring page describes, you need prevention, and that costs more. See our guide to the best chargeback apps by job.
You use a processor the app does not support. Many of the cheap apps focus on Shopify Payments. If you take payments through other processors, check support first. ChargeFix supports Shopify Payments only, not Stripe or PayPal.
You have a high-value catalogue. If one dispute is worth thousands, you may want human review or a tool with a proven record. A $19 plan is cheap and a lost $3,000 case is not.
You want a long track record. New tools with no reviews can be great. They can also change pricing or disappear. If stability matters more than saving $20, pick one with a history.
How do you work out your own cheapest option?
Use this five-step method. It takes ten minutes.
- Count disputes. Take the last three months from your Shopify admin and average them.
- Estimate your win rate honestly. If you have no history, use 40% to be safe.
- Estimate recovered dollars. Disputes times win rate times average order.
- Price each option. Flat plans: the plan that covers your count. Percentage plans: the fee times recovered dollars.
- Add your time. Estimate minutes per dispute under each tool and multiply by your hourly value.
Our chargeback cost calculator and chargeback recovery calculator do the first parts for you. Our profit after chargebacks calculator shows what is left after fees. For the point at which a paid plan starts to pay for itself, see our guide on the chargeback app break-even point.
Illustration: a seasonal store compares a flat plan to a success fee
Another assumption-based example. A store sells gifts. It gets about 4 disputes a month for most of the year and 16 a month in the holiday quarter. The average order is $70 and half of disputes are won.
| Period | Disputes | Recovered | 20% fee | 25% fee | $19 flat plan (25 filings) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal month | 4 | $140 | $28 | $35 | $19 |
| Holiday month | 16 | $560 | $112 | $140 | $19 |
Across a year with 9 normal months and 3 holiday months, the 20% fee costs 9 × $28 + 3 × $112 = $588. The 25% fee costs 9 × $35 + 3 × $140 = $735. The flat plan costs 12 × $19 = $228.
The flat plan is $360 to $507 a year cheaper. A free plan covers none of the holiday months, so the practical answer is a free plan for quiet months if you like, and a flat plan for the rest. Most stores find one plan all year simpler.
So which is the cheapest chargeback app for Shopify for you?
Pick by your numbers, not ours. If you get fewer than three disputes a month, take a free plan and keep the Shopify form as backup. If you get three to thirty, take the flat plan whose allowance covers you with some room, and read the draft before anything is filed. If your orders are large and your volume is small, compare a capped success fee with a flat plan using the five-step method above.
Whatever you choose, write down the date you will review it. A cheap plan you never revisit becomes an expensive one the month your volume doubles.
Common mistakes when shopping on price
Choosing by monthly price alone. Compare cost per recovered dollar.
Ignoring the allowance. A $9 plan that covers 5 disputes is worse than a $19 plan that covers 25 if you get 12.
Forgetting that a win rate is not a promise. Vendor win rates are not comparable across tools. No one can promise your result.
Installing two tools. You get one submission per dispute. Pick one owner.
Skipping prevention. Free steps, such as a clear billing descriptor and honest delivery estimates, reduce disputes at no cost.
Not re-checking prices. These pages change. Check before you commit and again each quarter.
Paying for a guarantee you do not need. Some tools bundle guarantees. Know what you are paying for.
What we checked, and what you should check
We read the Chargeflow pricing page, the Shopify App Store listings for DisputeDesk, ChargePay, ChargebackWiz, Paidback, Do The Proof, Counterproof, Chargeback Buddy and Chargeback Copilot, and Redo's comparison and recovery articles, on 30 October 2026. Redo sells chargeback products, so we treat its figures as one vendor's view and attribute them. Before you buy, confirm these.
- The live price and allowance on the vendor's own page.
- That the app supports your payment processor.
- What happens when you pass the allowance.
- How the vendor handles your customer data.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest chargeback app for Shopify?
For one or two disputes a month, free plans cost nothing: ChargeFix, Chargeback Copilot and DisputeDesk all list one. At about eight disputes a month, flat plans from roughly $9 to $29 beat every percentage fee we found. At higher volume the flat plans win by a wider margin.
Are there any completely free chargeback apps?
Several have free plans with limits. ChargeFix gives 2 filings a month, Chargeback Copilot 3 evidence PDFs and DisputeDesk 5 packs. Do The Proof's free plan makes drafts only, and you send them yourself. Read each plan's limits before relying on it.
Is a success fee or a flat fee cheaper?
At very low volume the two are close, and a free plan beats both. From about eight disputes a month, a flat plan usually costs far less. For example, recovering $1,200 a month costs $300 at 25%, $180 at 15% and $19 to $39 on a flat plan.
Does a cap on the success fee make it cheap?
Only on large orders. Paidback and Disputifier list a $250 cap per case. On a $2,000 case, a 25% fee is $500, while a capped fee is $250. Below roughly $1,000 per won case, an uncapped 25% is actually cheaper than a capped 20%.
What hidden costs should I check?
Your time, drafts you must send yourself, allowance overages, alert and scan fees if you add prevention, annual lock-in, and the $15 dispute fee that a loss never returns. Also check how the app handles customer data and whether it files weak cases that you then lose.
Is the cheapest app always the best?
No. If you need to lower your dispute ratio, a recovery app will not do it. If your payments run through an unsupported processor, it will not work at all. And on high-value orders, a proven tool with human review may be worth more than the savings.
How much time does a chargeback app save?
Redo estimates 20 to 45 minutes to assemble a not-received response by hand. A tool that drafts from your records can cut that to a review. At ten disputes a month, saving 25 minutes each is more than four hours.
Do new apps with no reviews make sense?
They can, especially on a free plan where you risk nothing. Several low-cost apps launched in 2026 and have no reviews yet, including ours. Start on a free plan, run one real dispute in Manual mode and judge it on the result.
How do I know if a chargeback app is worth paying for?
Compare the monthly price with the dollars it helps you recover and the hours it saves. If a $19 plan recovers even one extra $75 case a month, or saves an hour of your time, it has paid for itself. Our break-even guide shows the sums.
