Won a chargeback on Shopify: what happens next
A win is not a cheque with a date on it. It is a decision that can still be reopened, and it does not wipe the dispute from your record.
When you have won a chargeback on Shopify, the order shows Won and Shopify returns the disputed amount plus the fee in your next payout after the decision. The dispute still counts toward your chargeback rate, and the bank can raise the same transaction again with a new deadline. So keep your evidence.

The 30-second answer (TL;DR)
- Winning a chargeback returns two things: the disputed amount and the fee. In the UK the fee is £10. Both come back in your next payout after the decision, so the cash date follows your payout schedule.
- Check the money, not just the status. Match the payout line items to the order, because a partial win returns less than the full amount.
- A win does not remove the dispute from your chargeback rate. Only having fewer disputes lowers it.
- The customer's bank can dispute the same transaction again after a win. A new deadline then appears in your admin, so resubmit your strongest evidence.
- Shopify's pages say nothing we could find about what happens to the order status after a win, or how a refund interacts with a dispute, so avoid assuming either.
- Do not chase the customer or gloat. A short neutral message, if you send one at all, protects the relationship and costs nothing.
- Record what you filed and what worked. That log is the cheapest way to improve the next response.
From win to money in the bank
| Step | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Decision | The order status changes to Won | Confirm it on the order |
| 2. Payout | The amount and fee return in your next payout after the decision | Match the payout line items to the order |
| 3. Rate | The dispute still counts in your chargeback rate | Do not expect the rate to drop |
| 4. Re-dispute | The bank can dispute the same transaction again, with a new deadline | Keep your pack and watch the order |
| 5. Records | The outcome is yours to log | Save the pack and note what you learned |

What happens after you win a chargeback on Shopify?
After you win a chargeback on Shopify, the status becomes Won, and the disputed amount plus the fee return in your next payout after the decision. The dispute stays in your chargeback rate. The customer's bank can dispute the same transaction again, with a new deadline. So the win is good news that still needs checking.
Nothing in that list needs you to submit anything. The decision has been made, and Shopify handles the money. Your job is to confirm, record and stay alert.
Four checks cover it.
- Confirm the status on the order, not just in an email.
- Match the money to a payout line item.
- Save the pack and a short note on the outcome.
- Watch the order for a new dispute.
The sections below take each of these in turn. If you are still in the middle of a dispute rather than after a win, our post on how long a Shopify chargeback takes covers the timeline up to the decision.
How do you confirm you have won a chargeback on Shopify?
Open the order and check that its chargeback status says Won. You can also filter orders by Chargeback and inquiry status and choose the won status if your admin lists it. Then confirm the money by finding the matching amount in your payouts. A status alone does not tell you whether you won the full amount or only part.
Shopify uses five statuses: open, submitted, won, lost and resolved. Of these, Won and Resolved are easy to mix up.
| Status | What it means | Did you submit? |
|---|---|---|
| Won | The decision went your way | Yes, or Shopify filed the response on the due date |
| Resolved | The dispute was settled automatically through a network dispute resolution programme | No response was needed |
| Lost | The decision went against you, and it is final | Yes, or Shopify filed the response on the due date |
| Submitted | You sent a response and the card company is still reviewing | Yes |
| Open | The dispute is waiting for you | Not yet |
The distinction matters because the money works differently. A win is something you earned with a response. A Resolved dispute closed without you winning anything in the usual sense, and you should check the order and the payouts to see exactly what happened to the funds. We found no description in Shopify's help pages of how the money flows for a Resolved dispute, so we have not described it.
If you need a reminder of where the filter and the order page live, see our guide to where to find chargebacks in Shopify admin.
A short routine makes confirmation reliable.
Win confirmation (5 minutes)
[ ] Open the order and read the chargeback status
[ ] Note the decision date if the order shows one
[ ] Find the matching line in the next payout
[ ] Check the amount: full disputed amount plus the fee
[ ] If the amount is lower, treat it as a partial win and note the figures
[ ] Update my tracker row: status, decision date, cash returned
[ ] Save the pack and a note on the outcome
[ ] Set a reminder to look at the order again in a few weeks
The last line is the one that guards against a re-dispute, which later sections cover.
When do you get your money back after winning a chargeback?
You get it in your next payout after the decision. Shopify returns the disputed amount and the fee together, so the date depends on your payout schedule, not on the day the order changes to Won. If your payout runs weekly, the money may be a few days away. Shopify's pages we reviewed give no further timing.
That wording matters. "Next payout after the decision" is not "immediately" and not "within seven days". It is whenever your next scheduled payout falls after the decision is recorded.
Example 1 (illustration)
You win a chargeback on a £145.00 order. The fee was £10.00, so £155.00 left you when the dispute was filed.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Disputed amount returned | £145.00 |
| Fee returned | £10.00 |
| Total expected in the payout | £155.00 |
The decision is recorded on a Tuesday and your payouts run on Fridays, so the £155.00 arrives in that Friday's payout. If the decision had been recorded on the Friday itself, whether it made that day's payout or the next depends on cut-off rules we have not found in the sources we reviewed.
Match the figure to the payout line items. Menu wording changes, so follow what your admin shows. If the payout line shows less than £155.00, look for a partial win.
We also have no source for how bank holidays affect payout dates. If a payout would fall on a UK bank holiday, check your payout report instead of assuming.
Do you get the chargeback fee back when you win?
Yes. In the UK the fee is £10 and Shopify returns it if you win. It comes back with the disputed amount in your next payout after the decision. Fees vary by country, and some third-party guides say refunds of the fee vary too, so check the payout line items for your own store.
Shopify's help pages list the fee by country. These are the figures we have.
| Country | Fee per chargeback |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £10 |
| United States | $15 |
| Euro area | €15 |
| Ireland | €15 plus 23% VAT |
| Australia | A$25 |
| New Zealand | NZ$20 |
| Canada | C$15 |
This post is written for UK merchants, so the £10 is the figure to plan around. The table is there because if you sell to or from another market, or read advice written for one, the fee and its handling may differ.
For UK stores, the arithmetic is simple. A £145.00 chargeback costs £155.00 in cash on filing. If you win, £155.00 comes back. If you lose, the amount is gone, and so is the £10.
Because a loss costs the fee too, the cost of fighting and the cost of accepting are the same. That is a point we make in our post on whether you can win a Shopify chargeback, where the break-even tables sit.
What is a partial win on a Shopify chargeback?
A partial win is a decision in which you recover only part of the disputed amount. Shopify lists it among possible outcomes. The help pages we reviewed do not explain how the partial amount is worked out, so read the figures on the order and match them to your payout. Do not assume a partial win returns the fee.
Treat it as a reconciliation task. You are comparing three numbers: what left your account, what the order says you recovered, and what arrived in the payout.
Partial win reconciliation
Order number:
Disputed amount:
Fee debited:
Total debited on filing:
Amount shown as recovered on the order:
Amount in the payout line:
Difference (total debited minus payout):
Does the fee appear as returned? yes / no / unclear
What I told Shopify Support, and the date:
If the numbers do not agree and the order does not explain why, contact Shopify Support with the order number and the payout date. Ask a specific question: how was the recovered amount calculated, and was the fee returned.
We do not describe the calculation because we found no source for it. Anything else would be a guess.
Does winning a chargeback remove it from your chargeback rate?
No. Shopify counts disputes filed, so a won dispute stays in your chargeback rate. The rate Shopify uses for account monitoring also includes disputes settled through network dispute resolution programmes. Wins lower your cost, not your rate. Only having fewer disputes brings the rate down.
This catches merchants who assume a good month of wins will clear the numbers. It will not.
You can see your rate in two places. Go to Settings, Payments, Chargeback monitoring, or open Analytics, Reports and search for Chargeback rate. Menu wording changes, so follow what your admin shows.
Example 2 (illustration)
A store has 480 orders in a month and receives 6 disputes. It wins 4 and loses 2.
| Line | Count |
|---|---|
| Orders | 480 |
| Disputes filed | 6 |
| Won | 4 |
| Lost | 2 |
A simple count based ratio of your own would be 6 divided by 480, which is 1.25%. That is not Shopify's calculation, which we have not reproduced. The point is that winning four of the six does not turn the 6 into 2. All six disputes still count.
The money story is different. If each was £80.00 plus the £10.00 fee, the six cost £540.00 on filing, which is 6 times £90.00. The four wins return £360.00, which is 4 times £90.00, so the net cost is £180.00, which is the two losses at £90.00 each.
So the wins protect your cash, but they do nothing to the 1.25%. To improve that, you need fewer disputes in the first place. The last section of this post covers the habits that help.
Can the bank dispute a chargeback again after you win?
Yes. Shopify says a customer's bank can dispute the same transaction again after you win a chargeback, and a new evidence deadline appears in your admin. The first win does not guarantee you keep the money. Our help pages do not say how long a second review takes, so resubmit your strongest evidence and watch the date.
Treat a won chargeback as won but not closed for a few weeks. The reminder at the end of the win confirmation checklist exists for this reason.
When a re-dispute arrives, the work is similar to the first time, but you start with an advantage: you already built a pack, and you know it succeeded. You can improve it without rebuilding it.
Example 3 (illustration)
You win a chargeback on Tuesday 8 December 2026, and the money arrives in your Friday payout on 11 December. On Monday 4 January 2027 the order shows a new dispute on the same transaction, with a new deadline of Monday 25 January 2027. That is three weeks, which we use for illustration only. Shopify's pages do not state the length of the second window.
Two working days before Monday 25 January is Thursday 21 January 2027, so that is your internal deadline.
| Date | Task |
|---|---|
| Monday 4 January 2027 | Find the new dispute. Read the banner and any new issuer document. Log it |
| Tuesday 5 January | Retrieve the original pack. Compare the bank's new claim with the first one |
| Wednesday 6 to Friday 8 January | Fill any gap the new claim exposes. Request extra carrier proof if the reason has changed |
| Monday 11 to Wednesday 13 January | Rebuild the files. Check each is 2 MB or less and the total is 4 MB or less |
| Thursday 14 to Wednesday 20 January | Spare days and a cold read-through |
| Thursday 21 January | Internal deadline. Submit now |
| Monday 25 January | Due date. 11:59 PM if no time is shown |
Shopify's pages we reviewed do not say whether the funds are taken again when the new deadline appears. Check your balance and payouts on the day you find it, and write down what you see.
Notice that the plan assumes you kept the pack. If you deleted the folder after the first win, you will be rebuilding from emails and carrier portals at the worst moment. Save the pack as soon as you submit.
For the evidence side, our guide to Shopify chargeback evidence and what Shopify submits for you explains file limits and what is added automatically.
What should you do with the customer after you win a chargeback?
Decide it as a business matter, separately from the dispute. If your proof showed delivery and the customer is silent, you usually need to do nothing more. If they contact you, answer politely and neutrally. If a genuine mistake was yours, consider putting it right. Shopify's pages we reviewed do not cover refunds after a win.
Winning a chargeback settles the money question with the bank. It does not settle whether the customer is happy, and it does not tell you whether you got something wrong.
| Situation after the win | A sensible next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery proof was clear and the customer says nothing | Record the outcome and move on | Nothing is left to resolve |
| The customer writes saying they found the parcel | Thank them and note it in your log | It shows the cause was a misunderstanding |
| The customer still says the order never arrived | Treat it as a service issue, separate from the dispute | A second conversation may avoid a re-dispute |
| You shipped the wrong item or made an error | Consider making it right | A win on proof does not fix a real mistake |
| You are thinking of refunding after the win | Ask Shopify Support first | How a refund interacts with a dispute is not covered in the sources we reviewed |
Please do not message the customer to say you won. It gains you nothing, it can provoke another dispute, and the customer has not necessarily done anything dishonest.
If you do want to write, keep it short and neutral.
Subject: Your order #[number]
Hello [first name],
I am writing about order #[number], placed on [date]. We have been in contact with your bank about this payment and the matter is now closed on our side.
If anything is wrong with the order, please reply to this email and we will look into it.
Kind regards,
[name]
[store name]
Notice what the message does not do. It does not say who won. It does not say anything about the customer's honesty. It does not promise a refund. It simply leaves a door open.
Should you ship again or refund after winning a chargeback?
Usually neither, if your proof showed the order was delivered. A fresh shipment or a refund after a win means paying twice for the same sale. If the customer genuinely did not receive the goods and you want to make it right, that is a goodwill decision. Check with Shopify Support first.
This is the question merchants ask most after a win, and the honest answer is that it depends on the facts.
If the tracking record, delivery photo and your messages show the parcel reached the address, you won because the evidence supported you. Sending a second parcel or refunding would give the customer the goods and the money.
If the evidence was thinner than you would like and you suspect the customer really did not get the order, the question is about the relationship and your own standards, not the dispute. Some merchants choose to make it right anyway, particularly for a loyal customer. That is a business call.
What we cannot tell you is how a refund interacts with a dispute that has already been decided. Shopify's help pages we reviewed say a refund is not possible once a chargeback has started, and that one is possible during an inquiry. They do not cover a refund after a win. Ask Shopify Support before issuing one.
What should you record after you win a chargeback?
Save the pack, the outcome and a short note on what the response contained and how long it took. Log the dispute reason, the amount, the dates and the cash returned. That record is your best tool for a re-dispute and for judging whether fighting future chargebacks is worth your time.
A win feels like the end, so records get skipped. A five minute entry now saves hours later.
Win log (one row per dispute)
Order number:
Dispute reason recorded by the bank:
Type: chargeback / inquiry
Disputed amount and fee (GBP):

Decision date:
Result: won / partial win / lost / resolved
Cash returned and the payout date:
Evidence in the pack (list the files):
Hours spent building the response:
What I think helped (my own view, not proof):
What was missing:
Re-disputed? yes / no, with the new due date:
Folder where the pack is saved:
Two caveats on that last pair of lines.
What you think helped is a guess. Banks have discretion, and Shopify's pages say strong evidence improves your chances without guaranteeing a result. Over time, your log will show patterns, but any single win is not proof that a particular exhibit decided it.
Hours spent is useful because it turns a win into a rate of return. If you spent four hours to recover £155.00, you have a figure to compare with the time on the next one. Our post on whether you can win a Shopify chargeback shows how to weigh effort against order value.
What does a won chargeback tell you about your response?
Less than you might hope. Banks have discretion, so one win does not prove that a particular exhibit decided the case. It does tell you that your pack was enough for that bank, on that claim, that time. Use it as a data point, review what the pack contained, and measure the effort against the cash recovered.
The useful question after a win is not "why did I win?" but "was that worth the hours?".
Example 4 (illustration)
In one month you win three chargebacks. Each cash figure is the disputed amount plus the £10 fee, and the hours are your own estimate.
| Order | Cash returned | Hours spent |
|---|---|---|
| First | £155.00 | 4.0 |
| Second | £98.00 | 2.5 |
| Third | £72.50 | 3.0 |
| Total | £325.50 | 9.5 |
The cash returned is £155.00 plus £98.00 plus £72.50, which is £325.50, and the hours are 4.0 plus 2.5 plus 3.0, which is 9.5. Dividing gives about £34 per hour.
Treat the £34 carefully. It is cash that was yours before the dispute, not profit. But it is a fair figure to hold against the value of an hour of your own time, and against the cost of an hour spent on something else. If the number is low for small orders, the break-even tables in our win rate guide show where fighting stops paying.
Here is a short review to run on each win.
Review after a win
[ ] Which files did I build that took the longest?
[ ] Which of them answered the bank's claim most directly?
[ ] What did I have to hunt for, and where should I have saved it?
[ ] Did the carrier give me proof beyond a status line?
[ ] Was the policy screenshot easy to find and dated?
[ ] How many hours did the response take, start to finish?
[ ] Would I fight an order of this size again?
[ ] What one habit would have saved the most time?
The "where should I have saved it" question produces the most value. Most of the hours in a response go on finding things that could have been saved when the parcel shipped.
What should you do in the weeks after you win a chargeback?
Confirm the status and the payout in the first week, check the order again at about 30 days, and keep the pack for at least four months from the sale. Those three points cover the money, a possible re-dispute and the 120 day customer window that MoneyHelper describes. Archive the folder only after that.
The routine below uses dates from an illustrative order placed on Saturday 10 October 2026, won on Tuesday 8 December 2026.
| When | Task |
|---|---|
| Tuesday 8 December 2026, the day of the decision | Confirm the chargeback status says Won. Update your tracker row |
| Friday 11 December 2026, the next payout | Find the amount and fee in the payout line. Note any difference |
| Friday 18 December 2026, a week later | If the money has not arrived, contact Shopify Support with the order number and payout dates |
| Thursday 7 January 2027, about 30 days after the win | Run the Open filter and look at the order for a new dispute banner |
| Monday 8 February 2027, about 60 days after the win | Repeat the check as part of your twice a week routine |
| Wednesday 10 February 2027, four months after the sale | Archive the pack. Keep the win log row |
Three points on that table.
The win and the payout are the two dates that matter for cash. The rest are habits that cost minutes.
Four months from the sale keeps the pack comfortably past the 120 day window MoneyHelper describes. The routine checks carry on as normal until then.
If a re-dispute does arrive, the pack is in the folder and the plan in the earlier section applies. If it does not arrive, you have lost nothing but a few minutes.
How do you reduce the chance of the next chargeback?
Fewer disputes is the only thing that lowers your chargeback rate, and a win does not. The most reliable habits are keeping delivery proof at the point of shipping, showing clear policies at checkout, answering customer messages quickly and finding disputes early. None guarantees fewer chargebacks, and your own log will show which matter in your store.
The habits below are about reducing the number of disputes, not about improving the odds of winning one.
| Habit | What it helps with | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Choose a delivery service that gives proof | A photo or signature gives you something stronger than a status line | A small extra cost per parcel |
| Capture and save policy screenshots with dates | Shows the terms the customer saw | A few minutes when the policy changes |
| Answer customer messages the same working day | A customer who is heard is less likely to ask their bank | Daily inbox time |
| Check for disputes twice a week | An inquiry can be settled with a refund before it becomes a chargeback | Ten minutes, twice a week |
| Keep evidence for at least four months | Customers can claim within 120 days | A folder and a habit |
| Review your win log monthly | Shows which products, carriers or reasons repeat | Thirty minutes a month |
On delivery proof specifically, trade press we reviewed reports that Royal Mail has added a photo captured on delivery for Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 where no signature is needed, so check what your service provides. Evri offers a Digital Signature add-on with photographic proof, and the price we saw was 60p, which may change. DPD proof options are not covered in the sources we reviewed.
Look for repeats in the log. If four of your last six disputes involved the same carrier, the same product or the same country, that is a lead worth following. A shared cause is often fixable.
For the wider picture, the Shopify chargebacks UK guide links every stage of the process, from the first alert to the decision.
What's different for UK merchants?
For UK merchants the fee is £10 and Shopify returns it with the amount if you win. If your Shopify balance cannot cover a chargeback, the amount is debited from your bank account, and a failed debit is retried after three business days. This is general information, not legal advice, so check your own position with your payment provider.
Four UK points matter after a win.
The fee. Winning returns the £10 with the disputed amount in your next payout after the decision. A loss does not return it, so fighting costs the same as accepting.
The debit. A chargeback you won may still have caused an awkward moment when it was filed, if your balance did not cover it and the amount came from your bank account. That is worth remembering when you plan cash for the next one.
The 120 days. MoneyHelper says customers can claim a chargeback within 120 days. A win does not stop a customer or their bank trying again, and Shopify says a re-dispute is possible. Keep your pack for at least four months, and longer for higher value orders.
Section 75. MoneyHelper explains that Section 75 covers credit card purchases from £100 to £30,000 and makes the card company jointly liable with the seller. It is a separate route from a chargeback. We do not know how Shopify treats a claim that arrives by another route after you have won a chargeback, so we have not described it.
Common mistakes
- Treating Won as the end. A bank can dispute the same transaction again, with a new deadline.
- Not checking the payout. A partial win returns less than the full amount, and the fee may not appear.
- Expecting the chargeback rate to fall after a win. Shopify counts disputes filed.
- Deleting the pack. You need it if the bank raises the dispute again.
- Messaging the customer to say you won. It gains you nothing and can provoke another dispute.
- Refunding without asking. How a refund interacts with a decided dispute is not covered in the sources we reviewed.
- Confusing Resolved with Won. Resolved means a network dispute resolution programme settled it without a response.
- Not logging the outcome. Without a record, you cannot judge whether fighting is worth your time.
FAQ
When do I get my money back after winning a chargeback?
In your next payout after the decision. Shopify returns the disputed amount and the fee together. The date depends on your payout schedule, not on the day the order changes to Won, so check your payout report. If a payout would land on a UK bank holiday, check the report rather than assuming a date.
Do I get the chargeback fee back?
Yes, in the UK. The fee is £10 and Shopify returns it with the disputed amount if you win. Fees vary by country, and some third-party guides say the handling varies too. Look at your own payout line items to confirm the fee appears, especially after a partial win.
Does winning remove it from my chargeback rate?
No. Shopify counts disputes filed, so a won dispute stays in the rate. Account monitoring uses a rate that also includes disputes settled through network dispute resolution programmes. Only having fewer disputes lowers it. You can see the figure under Chargeback monitoring or in the Analytics reports.
Can the bank dispute again after I win?
Yes. Shopify says a customer's bank can dispute the same transaction again after a win, and a new deadline appears in your admin. Resubmit your strongest evidence. We found nothing on how long a second review takes, so keep the pack you built and watch the order for a few weeks.
What is a partial win?
A decision in which you recover only part of the disputed amount. Shopify lists it as a possible outcome, but the help pages we reviewed do not explain how the amount is calculated. Compare the order, the payout line and what left your account, and contact Shopify Support if the numbers do not match.
What do I do with the customer after winning?
Treat it as a business decision separate from the dispute. If delivery proof was clear and the customer is silent, record the outcome and move on. If they write, answer politely. Do not say you won. If a real mistake was yours, consider putting it right.
Should I ship again or refund after a win?
Usually neither if your proof showed delivery, because you would be paying twice. If you want to make it right, treat it as goodwill. Ask Shopify Support before refunding, as the sources we reviewed do not cover how a refund interacts with a dispute that has already been decided.
What happens to the order status after winning?
The chargeback status shows Won. The pages we reviewed do not say what changes to the order's other statuses, such as payment or fulfilment. Open the order and read what your admin shows, and do not assume anything beyond the chargeback status until you have checked it.
How do I know I won a chargeback on Shopify?
Open the order and check the chargeback status for Won, or filter orders by Chargeback and inquiry status. Then confirm the money by finding the matching amount and fee in your next payout. A status alone does not tell you whether the win was full or partial.
