Shopify Payments UK fees 2026, including disputes
Shopify's pricing page lists a rate for every plan and card type, but not the fee that arrives when a customer disputes a payment. That one is in the help pages, so a fee guide has to read both.
Shopify Payments UK fees start at 2% plus 25p for an online card payment on the Basic plan and fall to 1.3% plus 25p on Plus. Amex and international cards cost more, from 3.1% plus 25p on Basic. A chargeback adds a £10 fee, returned if you win.

The 30-second answer (TL;DR)
- Shopify Payments UK fees for online card payments are 2%, 1.7%, 1.5% or 1.3% plus 25p, depending on whether you are on Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus. In-person card payments cost 1.7%, 1.6%, 1.5% and 1.5% with no fixed fee.
- Amex and international cards cost 3.1%, 2.7%, 2.5% and 2.3% plus 25p. A £60 Amex order on Basic costs £2.11 in fees, against £1.45 for a standard UK card.
- Using a third-party payment gateway adds a Shopify fee of 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% on top of what the gateway itself charges.
- A chargeback costs £10 in the UK and is returned if you win. The pricing page does not list it, so the help page is the source.
- On annual billing, Grow beats Basic once you take about £10,000 a month on Shopify Payments, and Advanced beats Grow at about £105,000.
- We did not verify PayPal's UK rates, so we cannot say whether Shopify Payments is cheaper, but the formula below lets you test any quote.
- Pricing pages change and ours were read on 2 October 2026, so check the current figures before you decide.

How much does Shopify Payments charge in the UK?
Shopify Payments charges a percentage plus 25p on each online card payment, and the percentage falls as your plan rises: 2% on Basic, 1.7% on Grow, 1.5% on Advanced and 1.3% on Plus. In-person payments carry the percentage only. Amex and international cards cost more on every plan.
The table above is the whole schedule of Shopify Payments UK fees for card payments, as Shopify's UK pricing page showed it when we read it on 2 October 2026. Two details are easy to miss. First, the 25p is charged per transaction, so it weighs more on small orders. Second, the plan price is separate from the processing fee, so a cheaper plan is only cheaper if your volume stays low.
We could not confirm from the pricing page whether the plan prices include VAT, whether Shopify Payments charges for currency conversion or payouts in the UK, or whether the page is dated. Treat those as questions for your own invoice, and use this post as a map of Shopify Payments UK fees, not as a quote.
What do Shopify Payments fees cost on a £60 order?
On a £60 online order, Shopify Payments fees come to £1.45 on Basic, £1.27 on Grow, £1.15 on Advanced and £1.03 on Plus for a standard card. An Amex or international card costs £2.11, £1.87, £1.75 and £1.63 on the same plans. The 25p fixed part is why the percentage alone misleads.
Example 1 (illustration)
Fees on a £60.00 online payment, worked from the rates above.
| Plan | Standard card | Amex or international card | Extra for Amex or international |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | £1.45 | £2.11 | £0.66 |
| Grow | £1.27 | £1.87 | £0.60 |
| Advanced | £1.15 | £1.75 | £0.60 |
| Plus | £1.03 | £1.63 | £0.60 |
The Basic row is 2% of £60 (£1.20) plus 25p. The Amex row on Basic is 3.1% of £60 (£1.86) plus 25p.
On a £60 order the difference between the cheapest and dearest plan is 42p, which is why the plan upgrade question later in this post depends on volume, not on a single order.
How much do in-person payments cost compared with online?
In-person card payments through Shopify Payments cost 1.7% on Basic, 1.6% on Grow and 1.5% on Advanced and Plus, with no 25p fixed fee. On a £10 sale on Basic that is 17p against 45p online, so the fixed fee makes small online payments dearer than the percentage suggests.
Example 2 (illustration)
Basic plan, standard cards, fees only.
| Sale | Online (2% + 25p) | In person (1.7%) | Online fee as a share of the sale |
|---|---|---|---|
| £10 | £0.45 | £0.17 | 4.5% |
| £25 | £0.75 | £0.43 | 3.0% |
| £60 | £1.45 | £1.02 | 2.4% |
If you sell at pop-ups or markets as well as online, the in-person rate is the lower one at every price. The online effective rate only approaches the headline percentage as baskets get larger. A store whose average order is under £20 should look at its real per-order cost, not the 2%.
How much do Amex and international cards cost on Shopify UK?
Amex and international cards cost 3.1% plus 25p on Basic, 2.7% on Grow, 2.5% on Advanced and 2.3% on Plus, each plus 25p. According to the pricing page, international cards are charged at the same rate as Amex on every plan. The extra is 1.1 percentage points on Basic and 1 point on the others.
If a large share of your customers are overseas, that gap adds up quickly. A store taking £10,000 a month of international card sales pays an extra £110 on Basic compared with standard cards, and £100 on Grow, before the 25p per order. Check your own sales split in Shopify's payments reports before you assume your blended rate is the headline one.
What does Shopify charge for chargebacks and disputes?
For a chargeback on Shopify Payments, the UK fee is £10, and Shopify says it is returned if you win. The pricing page we read lists no chargeback fee, so the fee lives in the help centre. A chargeback also debits the disputed amount, which returns only if you win.
Everything about the fee is on one help page: the £10 GBP figure for the United Kingdom, the return on a win, and the way a shortfall is collected from your bank account outside the normal payout schedule, with a retry after three business days. UK pricing is shown without VAT on that page, though the Irish fee is listed as EUR 15 plus 23% VAT. We found nothing on whether the original processing fee is returned on a lost chargeback, so check your payout line items.
Compare Shopify Payments fees for disputes with Stripe's UK fees, where a dispute costs £20 when received and a further £20 to counter it, with only the counter fee returned on a win. Our posts on the Shopify chargeback fee in the UK and Stripe dispute fees in the UK cover each fee rule in full.
What is the Shopify third-party gateway fee?
If you take card payments through a gateway other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra fee on each transaction: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. That fee is on top of whatever your gateway charges, so a gateway with a low rate can still cost more overall.
Here is the sum for a £60 order using Stripe's standard UK card rate of 1.5% plus 20p as the gateway. We are assuming the Shopify fee applies on top of the gateway's own charge, which is how we read the pricing page.
Example 3 (illustration)
| Plan | Stripe card fee | Shopify third-party fee | Total | Shopify Payments fees for comparison |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | £1.10 | £1.20 | £2.30 | £1.45 |
| Grow | £1.10 | £0.60 | £1.70 | £1.27 |
| Advanced | £1.10 | £0.36 | £1.46 | £1.15 |
The gap shrinks as the plan rises, from 85p on Basic to 31p on Advanced. Gateways can have other advantages, such as different payment methods or a negotiated rate, so the right comparison is your quote against these numbers, not the headline percentage alone. Stripe's standard UK rate shown here is for standard UK cards. Its premium UK, EEA and international cards cost more.
When should you upgrade your Shopify plan for lower fees?
On annual billing, Grow beats Basic once you take about £10,000 a month through Shopify Payments, and Advanced beats Grow at about £105,000. Basic to Advanced breaks even near £48,000. On monthly billing, the points move up to roughly £13,300, £139,500 and £63,800. Below those figures, the cheaper plan stays cheaper, whatever the headline Shopify Payments rates say.
The break-even is the extra plan price divided by the rate saving. Grow costs £30 a month more than Basic on annual billing and saves 0.3 percentage points, so £30 divided by 0.003 is £10,000. The 25p per transaction is the same on both plans, so it cancels out.
Annual billing also changes the plan price itself. The saving against monthly billing is £6 a month on Basic (£72 a year), £16 on Grow (£192) and £85 on Advanced (£1,020). Check Shopify's terms for what annual billing commits you to before you switch.
| Move | Extra plan cost a month | Rate saved | Break-even card sales a month, annual billing | Break-even, monthly billing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic to Grow | £30 (annual) or £40 (monthly) | 0.3 points | £10,000 | £13,333 |
| Grow to Advanced | £210 or £279 | 0.2 points | £105,000 | £139,500 |
| Basic to Advanced | £240 or £319 | 0.5 points | £48,000 | £63,800 |
Example 4 (illustration)
A store with a £50 average order, annual billing and all sales through Shopify Payments pays this each month, plan plus processing, for standard cards.
| Monthly card sales | Orders | Basic | Grow | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £5,000 | 100 | £144 | £159 | £359 |
| £20,000 | 400 | £519 | £489 | £659 |
| £60,000 | 1,200 | £1,519 | £1,369 | £1,459 |
| £120,000 | 2,400 | £3,019 | £2,689 | £2,659 |
Basic is cheapest at £5,000, Grow at £20,000 and £60,000, and Advanced only at £120,000, where it saves £30 a month over Grow. The point is that Advanced rarely pays off for a small store on fees alone. If you upgrade for features, that is a separate decision from the fee saving.
The table uses standard cards only. If you take Amex or international cards, your blended rate is higher, which moves the break-even points down slightly in favour of a higher plan. We have not modelled that, so run your own mix.
What is your real effective rate on Shopify Payments?
Your effective rate is total fees divided by card sales, and it is almost always higher than the headline. A Grow store with £20,000 of online sales, 20% of it on international cards and 400 orders pays 2.4% in processing, and about 2.65% once the plan is included.
The headline for Grow is 1.7% plus 25p. The mix of cards and the fixed fee push your actual figure above it. Work out your own Shopify Payments fees with this layout.

Example 5 (illustration)
A Grow store on annual billing sells £16,000 on standard cards and £4,000 on international cards across 400 orders in a month.
| Line | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Standard cards | £16,000 × 1.7% | £272 |
| International cards | £4,000 × 2.7% | £108 |
| Fixed fee | 400 × 25p | £100 |
| Processing fees | £480 | |
| Effective processing rate | £480 ÷ £20,000 | 2.4% |
| Plan, annual billing | £49 | |
| All-in | £529 ÷ £20,000 | 2.65% |
The headline said 1.7% plus 25p. The real figure is 2.4% before the plan and 2.65% after. Budget with the headline and you under-count by about £90 a month on these numbers. Update the inputs from your payout reports each month and the sheet shows where the margin goes.
Is Shopify Payments cheaper than PayPal?
We cannot say, because we did not verify PayPal's UK rates for this post. The honest comparison is your own, using Shopify Payments UK fees for your plan: take PayPal's current rate and fixed fee, run them on a typical order, and set the result against the Shopify Payments figure for your plan from the table above.
Use the same method as Example 3. Work out the fee on your average order for each option, multiply by your monthly orders, and add any plan or gateway fee that applies. Do it for your average order and for a small order, since fixed fees weigh most on small baskets.
Also check whether a provider counts as a third-party gateway for Shopify's extra fee. We could not confirm that from the pages we read, and it changes the answer on lower plans.
How much of your fees really go on disputes?
At a 0.75% dispute rate on £20,000 a month, a store on Grow pays £489 in plan and processing fees, but could lose £180 to disputes if it loses all three. Disputes are smaller than processing in cash terms, yet they behave differently, because only the £10 fee and the amount are at stake.
Example 6 (illustration)
A Grow store on annual billing takes £20,000 a month across 400 orders, at a £50 average order.
| Item | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Plan (annual billing) | £49 |
| Processing, 1.7% plus 25p on 400 orders | £440 |
| Plan and processing together | £489 |
| Three disputes lost, £50 plus £10 fee each | £180 |
| Of which fees | £30 |
| Of which disputed amounts | £150 |
Three disputes is 0.75% of 400 orders. If the store wins one, £60 comes back, and its dispute cost falls to £120. The fee is a small part of the loss. The disputed amount is the larger part, which is why the true cost of a chargeback in the UK matters more than the line on the pricing page.
The other thing to watch is your rate. Shopify says a high chargeback rate can affect account health and lead to reserves, and our post on the chargeback rate calculator and thresholds explains how the rate is counted.
What does a Shopify order really cost once disputes are included?
For the mixed-card Grow store in the effective rate example, plan and processing come to £529 a month, or £1.32 an order across 400 orders. If it also loses three disputes at £60 each, the monthly cost reaches £709, or £1.77 an order. Disputes add about a third to the cost of taking payments.
Example 7 (illustration)
| Item | Monthly | Per order (400 orders) |
|---|---|---|
| Plan and processing (Example 5) | £529 | £1.32 |
| Three disputes lost, £50 plus £10 fee each | £180 | £0.45 |
| Total | £709 | £1.77 |
This is a worst case, with every dispute lost and time left out. A win would bring the amount and the £10 fee back. The useful reading is the order of magnitude: three disputes in 400 orders add more per order than the 25p fixed fee. That is the reason to watch your chargeback rate as closely as your Shopify Payments fees.
What should you check on your Shopify payout statement?
Check five lines on each payout: the processing fee, the chargeback fee, the disputed amount, any fee returned after a win, and VAT. Your statement answers the questions this post could not, and a few minutes a month keeps your own fee figures accurate and current.
- Processing fees. Do they match the plan rates for the card types you sold?
- Chargeback fee. Is it £10 for each chargeback, and does it appear when the dispute is filed?
- Disputed amount. Is it debited at the same time, and returned only if you win?
- Returned fees. After a win, does the £10 come back? Note whether the original processing fee comes back too. The help page we read is silent on that.
- VAT. Do the plan, the processing fees and the chargeback fee show VAT, and how?
Record the answers in a sheet. After a few months you will know your own store's answers to the points we could not confirm, which is better than any general guide.
What's different for UK merchants?
Shopify Payments fees in the UK are in sterling with a single £10 chargeback fee, but the pages we read leave gaps. This section is general information, not legal advice. Check your own invoice for anything we could not confirm.
What we could confirm: UK plan prices, the card rates above, the 25p fixed fee on online payments, the third-party gateway fee and the £10 chargeback fee.
What we could not confirm: whether plan prices include VAT, how VAT applies to the chargeback fee, currency conversion costs, payout fees, and anything the pricing page leaves out. The pricing page was undated when we read it, so any figure here may change.
For disputes, UK customers can claim for up to 120 days on a debit card, according to MoneyHelper, so fees can arrive long after the sale. Keep order evidence and budget for a few disputes a month. Common mistakes
- Comparing headline percentages and forgetting the 25p. On a £10 order, 25p is 2.5%, more than the percentage itself.
- Assuming the cheapest plan stays cheapest as you grow. Use the break-even table once a quarter.
- Upgrading for the rate alone at low volume. At £5,000 a month, Advanced costs £215 more than Basic.
- Forgetting Amex and international cards. A heavily international store has a higher blended rate than the headline.
- Assuming a third-party gateway is cheaper. Shopify's extra fee can cancel the gateway's lower rate.
- Treating the £10 as the cost of a dispute. The disputed amount is the larger loss when you lose.
- Looking for the chargeback fee on the pricing page. It is in the help centre.
- Trusting an old article on Shopify Payments fees. Rates change, so confirm the figures on Shopify's pricing page before any decision.
FAQ
How much does Shopify Payments charge in the UK?
Online card payments cost 2% plus 25p on Basic, 1.7% on Grow, 1.5% on Advanced and 1.3% on Plus, each plus 25p. In-person payments are 1.7%, 1.6%, 1.5% and 1.5% with no fixed fee. Amex and international cards cost more on every plan, and a chargeback adds £10.
What is the Amex fee on Shopify UK?
Amex cards cost 3.1% plus 25p on Basic, 2.7% on Grow, 2.5% on Advanced and 2.3% on Plus, each plus 25p. International cards use the same rates. On a £60 order on Basic, that is £2.11 in fees against £1.45 for a standard UK card.
Is Shopify Payments cheaper than PayPal?
We did not verify PayPal's UK rates, so we cannot say. Work out PayPal's percentage and fixed fee on your average order, then set it against the Shopify Payments fee for your plan. On a £60 order, Shopify Payments costs £1.45 on Basic and £1.15 on Advanced for a standard card.
When should I upgrade my Shopify plan for lower fees?
On annual billing, Grow beats Basic once you take about £10,000 a month through Shopify Payments, and Advanced beats Grow at about £105,000. The break-even is the extra plan cost divided by the rate saving. Upgrade for features separately, because the fee saving alone is small at low volume.
What is the Shopify third-party gateway fee?
It is an extra fee Shopify charges when you use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. It is on top of the gateway's own charge. On a £60 order on Basic, it adds £1.20.
How much is the Shopify chargeback fee in the UK?
The UK fee is £10, and Shopify says it is returned if you win. It is charged with the disputed amount when the chargeback is filed. The pricing page does not list it, so check the Shopify help page on chargebacks. A shortfall in your balance is debited from your bank account.
Does Shopify Payments charge a monthly fee?
Not as a separate Shopify Payments fee on the pages we read. You pay your Shopify plan price, which is £25, £65 or £344 a month on monthly billing, or £19, £49 and £259 on annual billing, plus the card fees. Plus starts from £1,800. Check your invoice for VAT.
Do Shopify Payments fees include VAT?
We could not confirm it. The pricing page we read does not say whether plan prices include VAT, and the chargeback help page shows UK fees without VAT while listing Irish fees with it. Ask Shopify Support or read a recent invoice before you build a budget on these figures.
