An order for £310 of kitchen equipment comes in from a first-time customer. The billing address is a flat in Bristol. The shipping address is a unit on an industrial estate in Slough, and the order asks for next-day delivery. You ship it. Five weeks later the cardholder disputes it as unrecognised, and your Shopify balance loses £310 and a £10 fee. Was the Slough address a warning sign you missed, or a perfectly normal office? An address match, or the lack of one, is the first question a bank reviewer asks.
Address match dispute evidence is the comparison of the billing address on the card with the shipping address on the order, used to show that the person who paid is connected to the place the goods went. A clean address match is strong evidence on its own, because delivery to the cardholder's home is hard to argue with. A mismatch is not proof of fraud, but it changes how much else you must show. This guide explains the types of match, how to check them before shipping, how to present them in a response, and what to do with the awkward cases.
This guide is for you if:
- You run a UK Shopify store on Shopify Payments and see orders where the billing and shipping addresses differ.
- You want a clear rule for when a mismatch is fine and when it needs a check.
- You have lost a dispute where the reviewer said the address was not the cardholder's.

Disclosure. ChargeFix helps merchants respond to Shopify Payments disputes, and its evidence checklist reads billing and shipping addresses from Shopify, so I benefit when disputes need answering. I found no published UK statistics on how often an address match decides a dispute, so every example is made up and labelled. Where Shopify's pages are silent, I say so.
The 30-second answer (TL;DR)
- Shopify lists billing information and shipping details among the evidence for fraudulent, unrecognised, product not received and general disputes.
- Address match dispute evidence is strongest when the shipping address is the cardholder's own address, ideally one that has received earlier undisputed orders.
- A different address is common and often innocent: gifts, offices, family, holiday lets. It is a reason to check, not to refuse.
- Parcel lockers, freight forwarders and last-minute address changes carry the most risk to an address match and deserve a rule.
- Show the comparison in a small table in your response, and say plainly what you do not know.
Do this today (10 minutes):
- Open your last five disputed orders and put the billing and shipping addresses side by side.
- Mark each as a full match, a partial match or a mismatch.
- Note whether any shipping address had received an earlier undisputed order.
How address match fits into a dispute
| Stage | What can go wrong | The record that protects you |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout | Billing and shipping addresses differ | Both addresses stored with the order |
| Payment | Stolen card sent to a drop address | Payment checks, fraud risk level |
| Dispatch | A late address change redirects the parcel | A dated note of any change and who asked |
| Delivery | Parcel delivered to a place unrelated to the cardholder | Delivery scan, signature or photo |
| After delivery | Cardholder says they never ordered | Address history and earlier orders |
| Dispute | Reviewer compares the two addresses | A side-by-side table in your response |
What does address match dispute evidence actually prove?
Address match dispute evidence proves a link between the card and the place of delivery. If the billing address, which the card issuer holds, is the same as the shipping address, the goods went to where the cardholder lives. A thief rarely ships to the victim's own home, because the victim would receive the parcel. So a full match is hard for a cardholder to explain away.
It does not prove the cardholder was the buyer. A family member or housemate can order on someone's card and have the goods delivered to the shared home. That is why address match evidence works best alongside delivery proof, order history and emails to the cardholder.
| Level of address match | What it suggests | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Exact match, same building | Goods went to the cardholder's home | Strong |
| Same postcode, different building line | Probably the same household or a typo | Moderate |
| Same town, different postcode | Could be family, office or a drop | Light |
| Different town or region | Gift, work, travel or fraud | Needs a check |
| Different country | Gift, forwarding or fraud | Needs a check and a rule |
Shopify's own evidence list for fraudulent and unrecognised disputes names billing information and shipping and tracking. Its list for product not received names the same. So the two addresses are expected in nearly every response. If you add nothing, Shopify submits the addresses it collected itself. If you add a clear comparison, the reviewer does not have to do it for you.
What counts as a match when addresses are written differently?
Real addresses are messy, which makes an address match a matter of judgement. "Flat 2, 14 Elm Road" and "14 Elm Rd, Flat 2" are the same place. "Unit 5 Trade Park" and "5 Trade Park" probably are. A bank reviewer reads them with common sense, but you should help by lining them up.
In the UK the best anchor is the code at the end of the address, because it identifies a small group of properties. If the codes are identical and the house number matches, the addresses match for practical purposes, whatever the abbreviations. If the postcodes differ by the last two letters, the properties may be neighbours.
| Billing address | Shipping address | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Flat 2, 14 Elm Road, BS6 7AB | 14 Elm Rd Flat 2, BS6 7AB | Match, different formatting |
| 14 Elm Road, BS6 7AB | 16 Elm Road, BS6 7AB | Same street, different house: ask |
| 14 Elm Road, BS6 7AB | Unit 3, Trade Park, SL1 4XY | Mismatch: check before shipping |
| 14 Elm Road, BS6 7AB | 14 Elm Road, BS6 7AC | Probably a typo in the postcode |
This is a made-up table. It shows how to write the comparison in a response. Show both addresses exactly as they appear on the order, then add one plain sentence saying what you conclude, such as "These are the same address written two ways." Never rewrite an address to make it look like a match.
Why does an address match fail so often on honest orders?
Plenty of honest orders go somewhere other than the billing address. A gift to a relative, a delivery to a workplace because nobody is home in the day, a holiday let, a student sending to a parent. An address mismatch is the normal shape of a gift order, and our separate guide on gift order chargebacks covers the records that support it.
| Reason for a mismatch | How common | Risk | What helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gift to family or friend | Common in peak weeks | Low to medium | Gift flag and message |
| Delivery to a work address | Common | Low | A company name in the address |
| Holiday let or temporary stay | Occasional | Medium | Confirmation email |
| Student or lodger at a shared address | Occasional | Low to medium | Earlier orders to the same place |
| Parcel locker or collection point | Growing | Medium | Locker code in the delivery record |
| Freight forwarder | Occasional | High | A rule that asks for ID or refuses |
| Stolen card sent to a drop | Rare but costly | High | Payment checks, a pre-shipping check |
Your own store history is the best guide. Look at the last 50 orders with a mismatch and see how many were later disputed.
How do you check an address match before you ship?
A routine that tests the address match before dispatch is cheaper than a response afterwards. It costs a minute per order and you only apply it above a value you choose. For a store with a £40 average order, £120 might be the line. For a store selling £500 items, perhaps £400.
| Check | What to look for | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Full address match | Billing equals shipping | Ship, note the match |
| Postcode matches, line differs | Typo or formatting | Ship, note it |
| Different address, returning customer with history | Earlier orders to the same place | Ship |
| Different address, first-time buyer, high value | No history | Email to confirm |
| Shipping address is a parcel locker or forwarder | Higher risk | Apply your rule |
| Fraud analysis medium or high | Shopify warns | Hold, verify or cancel |
Shopify's fraud analysis, for eligible orders, rates the risk of a fraud chargeback as low, medium or high and suggests whether to fulfil, confirm with the customer first, or consider cancelling. It lists address checks among its indicators. The page does not describe the results of those checks in detail, and warns that individual indicators do not show overall risk. Use address match as one input to the decision, not the whole decision. Our separate guide on AVS and CVV checks covers the payment-side checks.
For the first-time, high value, mismatched order, a polite email gets you a written reply from the cardholder's own address:
Subject: Quick check on order #2087
Hi,
Thank you for your order. It is going to a different address from
your billing address, so we confirm orders of this size before we
dispatch.
Please reply "confirmed" to ship to Unit 3, Trade Park, Slough, or
send us the address you would like instead.
If you did not place this order, reply "not mine" and we will cancel
it and refund you in full.
Thank you,
The Example Store team
A "confirmed" reply from the email on the order is better evidence than any amount of address comparison. A "not mine" reply saves you the whole dispute.
How do parcel lockers affect an address match?
Lockers and collection points are convenient, and honest customers use them, but they create a gap. The parcel is delivered to a machine or a shop, and a code or a collection scan shows who took it, if the system records that at all. For a seller, the question is whether the delivery record ties the collection to the order.
I did not research the records kept by UK locker and collection point networks, so I cannot say what each captures. Ask your carrier three things: is a collection scan recorded with a date and time, is it linked to the order or only to the parcel, and can you download it as proof?
| Delivery type | Likely record | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| Home delivery with signature | Signature and name | Strongest |
| Home delivery, left in a safe place | Scan, maybe a photo | No person named |
| Parcel locker | Drop and collection scans, maybe a code | Who collected is unclear |
| Collection point in a shop | Collection scan | Staff may not check ID |
| Click and collect in your own shop | Whatever you record | Covered in our click and collect guide |
If you offer lockers, tell customers at checkout that the order must be collected by the person who placed it, and keep the collection scan with the order. For high value items, consider refusing locker delivery.
What does a freight forwarder do to an address match?
A freight forwarder gives a customer a local address, often in the UK, from which the parcel is sent on abroad. Customers use them honestly to buy from stores that do not ship overseas. Fraudsters use them because the goods leave the country and the real recipient is hidden.
For a seller, the delivery proof stops at the forwarder's door. You can show the parcel reached the forwarder. You cannot show it reached the cardholder. Many sellers set a firm rule: no forwarders on orders above a threshold, or a prior email confirmation and a copy of the customer's photo ID. The rule should be written into your shipping policy so it is fair and consistent.
| Option | What it protects | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Refuse forwarders above a threshold | Strong against drop fraud | Some lost honest sales |
| Allow with email confirmation | Moderate | Time per order |
| Allow with ID check | Strong | Friction, privacy duties |
| Allow without checks | Nothing | Higher dispute risk |
If you ask for ID, you take on a duty to handle it carefully under UK data protection law. Take advice before you collect ID routinely.
What happens to the address match when the address changes after the order?
A change of delivery address after payment is one of the most common warning signs. A fraudster who has an order approved may email to say "please send it to my work instead". The new address is not the one the card issuer holds. If you accept it with no check, you have broken the link that address match evidence relies on.
Shopify's US-only Protect programme voids cover if the shipping address is changed, according to Shopify's own page, which tells you how seriously the platform treats it. UK merchants do not have Protect, but the same logic applies to your own risk.
A simple rule works: no change of address after payment without a reply from the email address on the order, and no change at all after dispatch. If the customer asks for a redirect after dispatch, tell them to arrange it with the carrier, and keep the exchange.
| Request | Response | Evidence kept |
|---|---|---|
| Change before dispatch, from the order email | Allow, confirm in writing | The email thread |
| Change before dispatch, from a different email | Decline or verify by phone | The request and your reply |
| Change after dispatch | Refer to the carrier | The request and your reply |
| Change requested several times | Hold the order | The full thread |
I did not research how UK carriers handle redirections or what records they keep, so ask yours.
How do you present an address match in a response?
Put the address match in a small table with a sentence of conclusion. The reviewer sees the comparison at a glance and does not have to trust your summary.
Billing and shipping address comparison, order #2087
Billing address (card): Flat 2, 14 Elm Road, Bristol BS6 7AB
Shipping address (order): Flat 2, 14 Elm Rd, Bristol BS6 7AB
Result: same address, formatted differently.
The same shipping address received orders #1001 (3 March 2026) and
#1026 (19 June 2026), both delivered and not disputed.
The carrier shows delivery to this address on 9 October 2026 at
11:42, signed for by "J Smith".
If the addresses differ, say so and give the context:
Billing and shipping address comparison, order #2087
Billing address (card): 14 Elm Road, Bristol BS6 7AB
Shipping address (order): Unit 3, Trade Park, Slough SL1 4XY
Result: different addresses.
On 6 October 2026 we emailed the order address to confirm the
delivery address. The cardholder replied "confirmed" on the same
day. [attach the email thread]
The second response is weaker than the first, but still reasonable because it shows the cardholder knew about the delivery address. If you have no confirmation, say only what is true, and lean on payment checks and delivery proof.
How do you handle an order delivered to a work address?
Deliveries to a work address are among the most common honest reasons for a failed address match. The customer is out all day, the parcel would be left on a doorstep, so they ask for it to go to the office. The billing address is the home, the shipping address is a company, and the two have nothing in common on paper.
A work address is usually easy to support if you look for the right clues. The shipping address often carries a company name, a floor or a reception desk. The customer's email may be on the same company domain. A search of the business name and postcode will usually show an office. None of this proves the cardholder works there, but it makes a work address plausible, and a plausible reason is what a reviewer needs to hear.
| Clue | What it suggests | How to record it |
|---|---|---|
| Company name in the shipping address | A business delivery | Screenshot the order page |
| Email on the same company domain | The buyer is connected to the business | Note the domain in the order timeline |
| Reception or mailroom in the address | Staff accept parcels for others | Note it, and ask for a signature |
| Earlier orders to the same work address | An established pattern | Add them to your history table |
| A residential postcode with a "company" name | Possible drop address | Treat as a mismatch and check |
For a work address, a signature matters more than usual, because reception staff will sign for anything. Record the name and the time. If the customer says later that they never received it, a named reception signature at a real business is good delivery proof, and the earlier history is good link proof.
If you sell to businesses on purpose, say so in your terms and ask for a company name and a purchase order reference. A business buyer paying by corporate card has a different dispute pattern from a consumer, and a work address is expected, not unusual. Keep those orders in their own part of your reports, so a mismatch in consumer orders stands out. In both cases the aim is the same: a dated, plain record showing why the address match failed and why that was fine.
When is an address match not enough?
A full match does not close the case. A housemate, partner or child may have used the card. A stolen card can be used by someone who knows the victim and has the parcel delivered to the victim's door to intercept it. And a reviewer who sees a match may still side with the cardholder if they say the goods never arrived.
| Case | Why a match is not enough | What else to show |
|---|---|---|
| Housemate used the card | The address is shared | Emails to the cardholder, delivery signature |
| Parcel intercepted | Delivery proof shows only the door | A signature from a named person |
| Cardholder says "not received" | Address is fine but they claim no parcel | Delivery photo, carrier record |
| Cardholder says "not as described" | Address is irrelevant | Listing, photos, returns replies |
Treat address match as the foundation and build on it. It is rarely the whole house.
Should you fight when the address match fails?
No. Fight when you hold a confirmed address, a clean history or a signature from a named person at the delivery address. Think hard when the address is a locker or forwarder, the customer is new, the payment checks failed and you shipped anyway.
| Question | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|
| Did the cardholder confirm the address by email? | Very strong | Weaker |
| Had the address received earlier undisputed orders? | Strong | Neutral |
| Was there a signature or photo at the address? | Supports | Rely on payment checks |
| Did payment checks pass? | Supports | Think hard |
| Is the amount above the £10 fee and your time? | Worth answering | May not be |
The UK dispute fee on Shopify Payments is £10 and is returned if you win. The disputed amount leaves your balance at once. No tool can promise a win, because the bank decides.
What is a dated plan for tightening your address checks?
This plan starts on Monday 2 November 2026 and ends before the Valentine's rush.
| Date | Task | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Mon 2 Nov to Fri 6 Nov | Compare billing and shipping on your last 50 mismatched orders | A table of how many were disputed |
| Mon 9 Nov to Fri 13 Nov | Write your value threshold and your rules for lockers and forwarders | A short policy |
| Mon 16 Nov to Fri 20 Nov | Draft the "confirm your address" email | A saved template |
| Mon 23 Nov to Thu 26 Nov | Test the routine on live orders | A log of checks |
| Fri 27 Nov | Black Friday: apply the routine above your threshold | Held and confirmed orders recorded |
| Mon 4 Jan to Fri 29 Jan 2027 | Answer the first wave of post-Christmas disputes with a comparison table | Responses filed before deadlines |
| Fri 5 Feb 2027 | Review which mismatches turned into disputes | Updated threshold before Valentine's Day |
What does this look like for three UK merchants?
These are made-up examples.
A kitchenware shop in Bristol. Average order £120. The owner finds that most mismatches are gifts and deliveries to offices. A rule is added: orders above £300 with a mismatch and no history get a confirmation email. Disputes on those orders fall, and the few that remain come with a "confirmed" reply attached.
A trainers retailer in Manchester. Average order £95. The owner notices a pattern of first-time orders to parcel lockers in other cities, placed on cards that fail a payment check. A rule is added to hold lockers on first orders above £150. Several turn out to be card testing and are cancelled.
A craft supplies seller in Glasgow. Average order £35. The owner decides a mismatch check is not worth the time under £100, and instead sends a dispatch email and a delivery confirmation on every order. A disputed £35 order is accepted without a response unless the email trail is complete.
What is different for UK merchants?
UK postcodes are precise, usually identifying a handful of properties, which makes an address match easier to judge than in many countries. The dispute fee on Shopify Payments in the UK is £10, returned only if you win. Shopify Protect, which covers some fraud chargebacks, is for US stores only on Shopify's own pages, so UK sellers carry the fraud risk of a mismatched address themselves. Shipping to Northern Ireland and to Ireland has its own complications, which our guide on those routes covers.
Under UK data protection law, you should hold addresses only as long as you need them for the order, the legal duties on you and dispute defence. A customer can ask what you hold. We are not lawyers.
The Post Office's collection page shows how branch pickup works: Amazon, DHL, DPD, Evri, Parcelforce and Royal Mail each use a QR code, PIN, pick-up pass or notification card, some also ask for ID, and parcels are held for 7 to 18 days depending on the carrier. Those codes let the buyer collect the parcel, they do not prove it was collected, so for pickup orders ask the carrier for its collected scan and save it with the order.
What are the common mistakes with address match dispute evidence?
- Assuming a different address means fraud. Gifts and offices are normal.
- Assuming a full address match ends the case. A housemate or an intercepted parcel can still produce a dispute.
- Rewriting an address to make it look like a match. Show both exactly as entered.
- Accepting an address change after payment with no check. It breaks the link the evidence depends on.
- Allowing forwarders on high value orders with no rule. You cannot show the goods reached the cardholder.
- Ignoring lockers. A collection scan that is not tied to the order proves little.
- Skipping the confirmation email on first-time, high value, mismatched orders. It is the cheapest protection you have.
- Overstating the case. Do not claim the cardholder "lives at" an address you cannot show.
- Submitting before adding your own comparison. Shopify says early submission locks your edits.
- Missing the deadline. After it passes, only Shopify's automatic evidence goes in.
Frequently asked questions
What is address match dispute evidence?
Address match dispute evidence compares the billing address on the card with the shipping address on the order. A full match shows goods went to the cardholder's home, which is hard to argue with. A mismatch is common and often innocent, but it means you need other proof, such as a confirmed email or earlier orders.
Does an address match win a chargeback?
Not by itself. It is strong evidence that goods reached the cardholder's address, but a housemate may have ordered, or the cardholder may claim the parcel never arrived. Combine the address match with delivery proof, order history and emails to the cardholder. The issuing bank decides on the whole picture.
Does a failed address match mean fraud?
No. Gifts, workplaces, holiday lets and family addresses all produce mismatches for honest customers. A mismatch is a reason to check, especially on first-time, high value orders. Shopify's fraud analysis and your own history help you decide, and a short confirmation email settles most cases.
How do I compare two addresses written differently?
Use the postcode as the anchor and compare the house or flat number. Show both addresses exactly as entered, then add one sentence saying what you conclude, such as "same address written two ways". Never rewrite an address to make it match, because a reviewer will notice and discount your response.
Should I allow orders to parcel lockers?
You can, but the delivery record may show who collected only through a code or scan. Ask your carrier what it records and whether it links to the order. For high value items, consider refusing lockers or requiring a confirmation email, and keep the collection scan with the order.
What should I do about freight forwarders?
Set a written rule. Many sellers refuse forwarders above a value threshold, or require email confirmation and photo ID. Delivery proof stops at the forwarder, so you cannot show the goods reached the cardholder. If you collect ID, handle it carefully under UK data protection law.
Can a customer change the address after ordering?
Only with a check. Allow a change before dispatch if the request comes from the email on the order, and confirm it in writing. Refuse changes after dispatch and refer the customer to the carrier. Keep every request, because a late address change is a common warning sign of fraud.
How much does an address dispute cost in the UK?
On Shopify Payments the disputed amount and a £10 fee leave your balance when the chargeback opens, and the fee returns only if you win. If the goods have shipped you also lose them. A £310 order therefore costs £320 at once, plus the goods if you lose.
Does Shopify show me the address match?
Shopify's fraud analysis lists address checks among its indicators and rates eligible orders as low, medium or high risk. The page does not describe the check results in detail, so compare the two addresses yourself on the order page and in the dispute evidence. Shopify also warns that single indicators do not show overall risk.
Should I fight every dispute with a mismatched address?
No. Fight when you hold a confirmed address, a clean history or a signature at the delivery address. Consider accepting when the address is a forwarder, the customer is new and payment checks failed. A weak response takes time and cannot be changed once Shopify has filed it.
